The 100-Year Domain

Renew your domain name for 100 years, and never have to worry about it again.

That's what Network Solutions is offering. For a mere $999.99, paid up front, you can own the right to use your domain name until 2104. Who wouldn't sign up?

The company notes that several major companies have inadvertantly allowed their domain names to expire, and created havoc for themselves and their employees and customers.

Among them are Microsoft, which failed to renew its Passport.com address in 1999, and the Washington Post, which let its washpost.com domain name lapse earlier this year.

Network Solutions concedes that most domain-name owners will not want to pay $1,000 for something that costs $10-$20 a year under normal circumstances. Duh.

First of all, I guarantee no one will give a shit about domain names long before 100 years passes. Second, Network Solutions will not even be a memory by then.

You think whover takes over the company in 2063 is gonna care about the poor suckers who signed up for this service back when humans were all meat?

I do love the conceit, though. When I renewed bookofjoe.com a couple weeks ago, the girl who did the processing offered me a 100-year renewal.

I thought she was joking, and when she said it was true, I cracked up.
