Zakian as good on record as live

Just One of those Things
Laura Zakian
(Dancing Rino Records)

One problem with jazz CDs is that so often the live experience that is jazz does not translate and the music therein merely becomes "silence filler". Having seen Laura at her recent CD launch gig, I was worried the CD would not reflect the talented singer I saw on stage. I needn't have worried, as this is an engaging CD that rises above the norm for the genre. While there are no original pieces on this CD, there are some new arrangements of songs such as Mad About The Boy (Noel Coward) and Just One Of Those Things (Cole Porter). Ms Zakian has produced the perfect CD to alternate with the latest Norah Jones when you want something mellow. It will shock no one that me personal fave is 'Devil May Care'.

Rating: 4.8/5
