Probot - Probot

I'm not a fan of Dave Grohl or any of the various bands he's played with. I am however, a long-time fan of many of the singers on this CD. In fact, I own at least one release from all but two of them so to say that I was interested would be an understatement.
As stated in interviews and in the liner notes of the CD, Grohl didn't set out to break new ground or take over the heavy metal scene. His intention is to put out a heavy metal CD with vocalists who "contributed to my record collection over the years."
Unburdened by the commercial appeal of such a project, Grohl wrote all the music and played all the instruments, then sent out the tapes to various singers, who wrote the lyrics and sang. In some cases, they added a bit of music as well. The resulting collaboration is Probot.
From the opening riff of the Cronos collaboration "Centuries of Sin" to the to the closing riff of the hidden track and everywhere in between, this CD shreds. Highlights, if one must pull them out are "Silent Springs" with Kurt Brecht (D.R.I.), "Dictatosaurus" with Snake (Voivod) and the particularly Sabbath-esqe "My Tortured Soul" with Eric Wagner (Trouble). I've read some reviews criticizing Tom G. Warrior's (Celtic Frost, Apollyn Sun) "Big Sky," but I think it's a pretty damn good song, even if it's not a return to early Celtic Frost.
Grohl has managed to capture each singer's style pretty well and at some points, particularly the track with Lemmy, he captures it too well, making the song sound like a Motörhead cover but that's not necessarily a bad thing. With excellent artwork by Away (of Voivod fame), a decent selection of old-school metal singers, quality writing and excellent playing, he's managed to make this a fun slab of classic-style metal. A must-have for anyone who could name what band these singers are from without reading the liner notes.
