Tasteless CD Pulled
Published March 25, 2004
According to News Channel 10:
The record company and the distributors plan to pull the CD as soon as possible, News Channel 10 reported Wednesday. The action comes in response to outrage over the album's title, "Burning House of Love".The Great White CD was the first to be released since The Station nightclub fire. Many felt that the label that released the recording, Horizon Italy, picked the title to cash in on the West Warwick tragedy.
The record label that released the album claims the title has nothing to do with the nightclub fire, which killed 100 people including Great White's guitarist. It said it was chosen simply because it's the name of one of the cover songs Great White musicians performed before the fire.
Less than 1,000 copies of the CD have been sold.
As Marty said Monday, the title was totally tasteless and I'm pretty sure that there isn't a person out there who believes that it was named that way for any other reason than to generate controversy. The fact that "less than 1,000" copies are sold makes me sick to my stomach. Less than 1 would have been appropriate.
I actually do believe that the band didn't have anything to do with this, though. They've been donating all of the profits of every show since the fire to the Station Family Fund, it doesn't make sense to pull a publicity stunt like this at this point.
The official statement from the band's website:
GREAT WHITE URGES ALL NOT TO PURCHASE THE RECENT ALBUM RELEASED UNDER THEIR NAME ALBUM IS NOT A LEGITIMATE "GREAT WHITE" RELEASE ALBUM TITLE IS IN POOR TASTEHollywood, CA (March 18th 2004) - The label Horizon-Italy has recently released an unapproved album titled Burning House of Love. This album is not approved by GREAT WHITE. Rather the band condemns this release and asks all fans and friends not to purchase this album. They feel that the label is insensitive to the victims of the fire and are trying to capitalize on a tragic situation. This type of practice is called repackaging — record companies take previously released songs, put on a new cover with a new title.
The band and their attorneys are working on stopping this release, as it is being sold under the GREAT WHITE name without GREAT WHITE'S permission. GREAT WHITE wants to apologize for any discomfort this may have caused, as they found out about this release much the same way as the fans — via the internet. It was of great shock to the GW camp.
As someone from RI who's been deeply affected by this tragedy, I'm appalled at the lack of respect for over 100 people... and I KNOW I'm not alone.
