24: The Bitch is Dead

If ever there was a character on broadcast TV who deserves the appellation, it's Nina Myers of 24.

In a mere three seasons, the lean nightmare preternaturally portrayed by actress Sarah Clarke, has betrayed her country three times, killed former lover Jack Bauer's wife and unborn child, aided and abetted a plot to kill a candidate for president of the United States, helped bring a nuclear bomb into the United States, helped bring a deadly virus into the United States, killed numerous unnamed others who got in her way, and served as an insinuating, slithering icon of woman-as-castrator evil.

Last night, it looked like she would escape yet again, having lulled the CTU medical team into complacency by nearly killing herself, faking anesthesia-induced unconsciousness, then (off-camera) wiping out the medical staff with surgical instruments and leaving a trail of death and destruction in her wake.

Then, when Jack's daughter Kim confronted the escaping Myers at gunpoint, the excruciating standoff seemed certain to result in ill for Kim. But then a shot rang out! Jack found them and shot Myers. Even then, as she lay on the concrete bleeding, her hand inched toward a gun before Jack almost audibly said "FUCK THIS SHIT" and shot her three more times. Dawn shouted out, startling kiddies, "Shoot her again, shoot her again." But the bitch was dead - FINALLY.

24 is in high gear now - it always seems to do better when confined to a small, constrained area, where the interpersonal conflict can build to a pressure cooker pitch, as it has of late.

And speaking of bitches, how coldblooded do you have to be to goad a sick old man into an angina attack, then just sit there while he expires begging for his pills? Damn cold - that's Sherry Palmer.

Great description of Nina and the Nina Plot. Only real difference for me was at the end, I was yelling something a little less kind at the screen: "PLEASE KILL KIM AND PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY!"

But the bitch was dead - FINALLY.

...or so they'd have us believe.

Personally, I've liked Sherry more as a villainess on this show than Nina. Where the latter comes across as just a conscienceless mercenary, Sherry Palmer always has a layer of rationalization (she's doing it "for David"!) for every action - and you know she half believes her crap. Makes her much more interesting as a character. . .

Actually, what I thought I yelled was, "Jack, you fool! Empty your gun into her face, toss her corpse out the window, light her on fire, piss on her, then take a squat on her face."

By the way, the pic of Clarke above is a still from the VW Jetta commercial called "Synchronicity," where a couple drive down a city street listening to a song in which every beat seems to coincide with the actions of the people they pass.

Cool.

Bill, I agree Sherry is more interesting as an actual person, but Nina was an evil force of nature.

Thanks Steven! I can never get too down on Kim because she looks a lot like my daughter and is about the same age. I like the father-daughter relationship between she and Jack. He needs her as much as she needs him.

In fairness to Kim, she's been much better this season. She's not the most intriguing character in the show, but at least she's not just purposely seeking out stupid trouble, like last season's totally unnecessary run-away-into-unfamiliar-woods routine.
