'Decasia'

A unique film, like none before it, just out on DVD. Like no other movie ever made, it depends - literally - on the existence of other movies past for its own creation.

Bill Morrison found a huge trove of decomposing early 20th-century nitrate-based film stock, and out of it created a 67-minute-long montage that is a kind of meditation on time, with an eerie soundtrack by Michael Gordon.

The movie uses the effects of the phyical decay of the footage itself as a medium to convey a sense of passing and loss.

I bought and watched it on VHS last year, and it was haunting; on DVD it must be all the more powerful.

The strange quality of time that envelops the viewer might be a perfect accompaniment for a drug-related experience. While not a drug user myself, I think those who like drugs will find watching this film while under the influence mindbending.

They've been occasionally running this movie since the summer on IFC. I gotta say, I've not seen anything like it. There's something very beautiful and extremely jarring about it all at once.

I remember the first time I saw it. It was on a really nice afternoon, and the rest of the day I was edgy and somewhat withdrawn!
