Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth are being investigated in Poland for causing religious offense after a show that included dozens of sheep heads on stakes, a literal blood bath and a naked, crucified woman, newspaper Aftenposten reports.

The concert in Krakow was broadcast by state TV station TVP and the resulting scandal was the center of attention in Polish media, according to Aftenposten. The band are now being investigated for causing religious offense, which is punishable by up to two years in prison.

Gorgoroth's lead singer was in trouble with the law before; he spent some time in jail for getting into a bar fight. However, I believe this is the first time the band has ever been in danger of going to jail simply for playing a concert on television. The furor over Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's performance at the Super Bowl may be ridiculous, but at least there's no chance they'll be behind bars because of it. Then again, the band may not mind spending two years in a cushy European jail if the notoriety boosts the sales of their albums.

Last of the vikings, I guess.

Evidently, the guitarists in this band are named Infernus and King ov Hell, which were the favorite names given to baby boy Vikings (Norwegian branch) in the years 932 and 966, respectively. I know that being doused in sheep's blood and hung by the wrists was a popular ritual practiced at debut ceremonies for Viking girls when they reached the age of 12. The tradition lives. (Bloody Vikings.)
