Superbowl Halftime Bore

CBS adds secret performer for halftime show

HOUSTON (AP) — Janet Jackson, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Kid Rock and Nelly apparently weren't enough for CBS' 12 1/2-minute Super Bowl halftime show.

Another act is poised join the MTV-produced extravaganza. Who that is will remain a mystery until the program, producers said Thursday.

The production will require 350 local volunteers to haul and assemble 70 pieces of the stage, which spans 120 feet. Then about 2,500 youngsters from area schools will pour onto the field to create a festival concert atmosphere.

Combs said that as big a deal as the halftime show has become, the musicians are just a sideshow.

"This is all about the players," he said. "We're here to fill some time while they get ready for the second half."

Does anyone care about this? Plus, who do you think CBS will bring on as a special mystery guest? Will it be some over-the-hill "diva" like Aretha Franklin? Will it be some incongruous musical act that all the hip-hop stars are going to pretend to respect like the Rolling Stones? Will it be the "triumphant return" of everyone's favorite wacko, Michael Jackson?

Who cares. They could bring all those people up and I still wouldn't care. Everyone tries to to create magic all the time and then they declare that something was amazing, and spectacular before anyone even has a chance to judge. This just in. Aerosmith, Kid Rock and Run D.M.C. getting together on an MTV stage sucks. Aerosmith, Britney Spears and N'Sync together on the Superbowl sucks. Throwing in Shania Twain doesn't do anything to make it not suck. Gwen Stefani can't make it any better either.

Pearl Jam and Neil Young? That's a pretty good match. Eminem and Elton John? Compelling. I am not sure what makes the matches special, but you can't force it. You will have to excuse me if I don't think P Diddy has the juice to create a magical moment.

So, who is the magical special guest? It doesn't matter. Janet Jackson, P Diddy, Kid Rock and Nelly have already guaranteed that there will be no magic during the 12 and 1/2 minute Superbowl halftime show.

UPDATE: More SuperBowl news, including plenty of pictures of the half-time show, are collected here at Blogcritics.org.

Throwing Gwen Stefani and Shania Twain together...Mmmmmmm, yummy!

#2 — January 30, 2004 @ 10:45AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

i see that ms. tek's tattoo post is still workin' its voodoo over bricklayer.

#3 — January 30, 2004 @ 12:12PM — Mike [URL]

The mystery guest will be Van Halen.

#4 — January 30, 2004 @ 12:18PM — JR

Damn, I was hoping for Bruce Dern and Marthe Keller in the Goodyear blimp.

#5 — January 30, 2004 @ 12:45PM — BRICKLAYER

Yo Mark, the backshot is burned on my retinas. I have forbid myself from looking at that post more than once per day. I will be begging Mrs. Bricklayer to at least reconsider her zero tattoo policy for herself. Funny story: this guy who used to tattoo me (cool dude, great taste in music, but possibly a skinhead of the unsavory variety-he was always vague and skittish when I would question him on such things) told me about having to tattoo the rather rotund and pock marked booty of this gal, while her boyfriend loomed over his shoulder making these satisfied, animalistic grunting noises. He said he never wanted to turn around to see what that dude was up to!

Oh yeah, please add Sheryl Crow to the equation in my above post. As Gov Dean says: "Yeeeeeeaaaaah!"-I'm trying to teach that to Lil' Brick, and he's getting pretty good at it. He can say "Moo" too. And imitate the sound of a vacuum cleaner, a car, and a spray bottle. Yes, we are very, very proud.

#6 — January 30, 2004 @ 14:40PM — duane

Tell you what. How bout some football-related stuff during halftime instead all this MTV spillage? I can understand why the fans in the stands might need some half-time entertainment, but the TV audience does not. And its the TV audience for whom the half-time shows are being designed.

Remember the scene in Rocky IV when Apollo Creed gets James Brown to do "Livin' in the USA?" Apollo is dancing around, and Ivan Drago is looking around, his expression saying, "What the...? What does this have to do with boxing?" That's the way I feel when some teenaged girl comes up to show off her navel right in the middle of a football game. God, I feel old sometimes. Now, excuse me. I have to go shoo some kids off my lawn.

Ok, just saw the halftime show. And did I see correctly? Did justin Timberlake rip off Janet's top and expose her breast!??!

#10 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:46PM — Joe

What the heck happened with Janet and Justin at the end of the performance? Does anyone have that on TIVO?

#11 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:46PM — TK

Was that Janet's boob ?

#12 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:46PM — Geoff

Was that Janet Jackson's boob at the end of the half time show?

#13 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:47PM — jrocker

Just watched the 2004 haltime show... now correct me if I'm wrong but did Timberlake just rip a piece of Janet's costume off and bare a boob??? Halftime just got a bit more interesting!

#14 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:47PM — Moe-Cheeks

Boring? You must be kidding!Janet's breast with silver pasties flashed on national television was well the worth and hype!

#15 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:48PM — rg

Something more interesting than Bennifer or Britney on the cover of US, IN TOUCH or PEOPLE !

#22 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:54PM — JoeSuff

Maybe Janets boob was the special guest? Now i have an unquenchable need to eat milkduds.

#23 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:54PM — Shaun [URL]

That was in fact Janets boob, I have it on the PVR and will dump it soon out to an mpeg. but that was her boob!

#24 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:55PM — Mad Hatter

you know that was planned from the start! timberboy wouldn't risk getting sued into the ground on that one :)

#25 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:56PM — John

Someone post a jpg from the halftime show so everyone can check it out please...

#26 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:57PM — Eric

What was CBS thinking? The superbowl is the largest television event of the year, and they choose artists(?) who sing about crack, whores, sex, drinking, etc. The producers of that half time debacle should be fired.

#27 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:57PM — Shaun

If someone doesnt do it untill the game end I'll do it for ya'll but I dont wanna miss the game and be the last one in the world being delayed by the game end

#28 — February 1, 2004 @ 20:58PM — TK

If it weren't for the fact that we won $100 on the halftime score, I'd have been offended ! :P

#29 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:00PM — chooch boy

that's not right.
the mystery guest was certainly "tittilating".

Was that a pastie or a nipple ring?

#40 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:11PM — kymailguy

Somebody post a link for the Janet and Riverdancer added value entertainment. Thanks

#41 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:13PM — Mac Diva [URL]

Let's not forget sponsors of this year's Super Bowl produce those miracle drugs Cialis and Levitra. (Perhaps Al Barger is watching and will finally perk up and leave the farm.) I don't know how you explain what Cialis and Levitra do to a four-year-old. Eric?

#42 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:15PM — Greg

What a shity half time show...who produced that?

#52 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:23PM — TK

Yes, that is definately a boob. All three of them. The dummy's.

#53 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:24PM — Natalie Davis [URL]

Ah, excellent viewing for American families. Appalling: From Kid Rock singing about crack and hookers, to Nelly encouraging people to "take off all your clothes," to Justin apparently flashing Janet's breast on NATIONAL TELEVISION... Oh well, at least we can take pride in living in the USA and being part of a rhythm nation.

#54 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:26PM — Eric

I guess CBS will sell time to anyone who has the money, but do we really need to know that a 4 hour erection is a potentially dangerous side effect of Levitra?

#55 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:27PM — The Truth

I have Tivo and I can officially say that was a PIERCED Janet Jackson titty. I backed it up and checked .......very nice.....

#56 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:28PM — TK

Yes, it's sad. We skipped the party this year to stay home with the kids... first time they have watched. Go figure. We couldn't help but laugh, yet I am plenty sure there are parents out there that are pretty tic'd off.

#57 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:31PM — Dee

That was a tittie tittie tittie. Janet is trying to keep up with Britney and Madonna! I'm wondering if CBS had any idea of this big "event"?

#58 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:36PM — Mac Diva [URL]

Careful, Eric. We don't want Barger to get too excited.

#59 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:36PM — Wow

so nipple ring or nipple sticker? planned or unplanned? what's the consensus?

#60 — February 1, 2004 @ 21:37PM — Shaun

Yes, shiz.us, I'm getting slamed hard sorry ppls but it looks like someone else got it up there, I'll still post the mpg. I'm working on it now.

Kind of looked like a German Iron Cross medal pinned through a piercing on her tit. Pity that this was the breast that this year's Superbowl had to offer...

What I believe Janet has on is a Nipple shield with possibly a ring.

She has admitted before to having pierced nipples.

And I am really open minded, but no- I don't think that was okay for the Superbowl.

#86 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:45PM — Eric Olsen

I am sure it was an accident - boobslippage under such circumstances is hardly unprecedented.

#87 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:47PM — Eric Olsen

I believe we now know who the Special Surprise Halftime Guest was

#88 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:50PM — michelle

janet's top came undone.

#89 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:51PM — mbg [URL]

"I'll get you naked by the end of this song," sang performer Justin Timberlake, moments before he ripped off Jackson's top, exposing a bare breast -- the nipple covered by a tassel.

#90 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:53PM — wineaux

The costume was rigged. If you take a look at one of the pics of Justin Timberlake, he is holding a tear-away portion of her costume in his hand. This was staged. It was NOT appropriate for the Superbowl.

#91 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:55PM — jrocker

Most bizarre thing I've seen on Superbowl. Full frontal for SB39?? I think it was new and risque and can't wait for a vid!

#92 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:55PM — Natalie Davis [URL]

Didn't take long -- the postgame show isn't over and CBS has already apologized.

Preplanned network-a culpa? It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission...

#93 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:57PM — mbg [URL]

It was all planned.Look at MTV.com

#94 — February 1, 2004 @ 22:59PM — Shaun

#95 — February 1, 2004 @ 23:06PM — TDavid [URL]

The actual football game was much better than pundits were predicting.

Glad to see something different, albeit controversial, in the half-time show, though it looks like MTV is in some hot water for future Superbowls.

And what about the before game festivities? I sure hope we don't have to endure any more Willy Nelson or Aerosmith at Superbowl. Can you spell o-l-d? I was feeling pain watching both of them try to hit their notes.

Missing? ZZ Top and Bon Jovi. My guess is they'll be back next year. Hopefully not.

I just happened to look up at the critical moment to see Miss Jackson's voluptuous breast exposed by Justine "I wish I was born black" Timberlake. I literally did a double take. I guess now we know why CBS is America's most watched network. If they keep this up, I'm going to cancel my Cinemax!

#99 — February 1, 2004 @ 23:22PM — Shaun

Holy crap yeah slow isnt the word for it, my network came to a screetching halt. Hell I'm only hosting off dsl :D ....

#100 — February 1, 2004 @ 23:27PM — Fritz

That halftime show was without a doubt the most incredible dislay of garbage I have seen to date. I hope CBS has hell to pay for it.

#101 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:07AM — Natalie Davis [URL]

Re: #98 -- Congrats, kmann. Must take great skill to come up with a comment that is homophobic, genderist, and pigmentationist -- and more. You must be proud. I didn't think much could be more offensive than the Super Bowl halftime show, but you surely scored there.

#102 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:20AM — suzy

"homophobic, genderist, and pigmentationist"

Plz make up more words to sound smart. I am not yet in awe of you.

#103 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:21AM — Ward Clark

I am very disapppointed and disgusted with the halftime show. If you are as well, go to the CBS website and send so many complaint E-mails that it shuts their system down, or at the very least, causes them some grief. What are they gonna do, sue us?
Just type in "you suck" on the complaint form and send it over and over.

#104 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:31AM — Morty

The breast-exposing was definitely ridiculous, but everyone (like our buddy Matt Drudge) needs to stop acting like it's scandalous. Relax, it's silly, but it's just a boob.

#105 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:34AM — Shaun [URL]

2 words.. SO WHAT.. I mean please, you got shaq blurting out the f and s words, you got bono sayin the f word on the grammies, you got this situation.. and if I can remember correctly, didnt lil kim do the same thing, struttin up the red carpet with her boob dangling out there?? AND to top it all off Diana Ross giving a few love taps on her boob?? Please.. GET USE TO IT for god sakes. I mean come on, you think our little flubs are shocking you shouldnt go to say Germany, or Paris and watch their tv. Its people like you that prevent us from watching True free tv.

#106 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:35AM — Rudager

What is wrong with you people, stop being a bunch of sissies. CBS didn't do anything wrong, it was just a breast. We've all seen one, and if you are offended for your children or something, well fu*k your children.

#107 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:39AM — Shaun [URL]

Maybe parents need to 1 Tell their kids about well, in this case boobs earlier cuz it aint gettin any better, my kid knows about them and shes 6. Or 2 dont let them watch LIVE TV, espically with MTV doing the show. I mean DUH!!! Hell my parents watched Kennedy getting shot live.

#108 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:41AM — ward clark

Hmmmmm.....
Germany?
Wasn't there a man named Adolf Hitler who lived there? The self professed King of "It's not a bad thing, It's just that nobody else is doing it"?
Get a grip, dillweed. If I want to see a boob, I don't want to turn on my television and see it. You and the media are confusing the Internet with Television. Ask yourself, "what next"? soft core porn in prime time? Why not? WHERE DOES IT END !!!! Unfortunately, it ends like the Roman Empire.
Read your history.

yes, it's a pastie.

#110 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:46AM — boomer

Rudager, YOU are a scum-suckin' pig for talking that way about kids.

#111 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:49AM — Ward Clark

On second thought, screw all of you.
maybe we need somebody like Hitler to give us what we need. Boobies and world domination. Let's not think for ourselves, we can just let the media and Hollywood dictate our thoughts. Besides, if other countries are watching naked people on T.V., well I'll be DAMNED if I am going to deprive myself or my children from seeing the same. But hey, while we're at it, lets all live in grass huts like some other countries do. After all, we don't want to base our comparisons with the rest of the world on our own selfish wants and needs.
OR DO WE?

#112 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:50AM — Shaun

Apparently you have NOT been overseas, and you apparently dont know Germans and I mean by the fact that they are embarrassed by that jackass, you turn on the tv in the Swiss, or the tv in Paris, and yes in Germany and you will see that its a natural thing, that is NOT represented by sex like it is here. and one more thing, what the hell does Hitler have to do with boobs on tv? Just because you sound dumb lemme fill you in on some things, German tv, my in-laws were there, seen on tv were this : Boobs, genitalia both men AND woman, and to tell you, Soft core porn was on the air waves as well. Just so we clear up any arguments, Swiss tv, the British, Germans, french, and I imagine every other place aside from Canada and us that show the same things. I think you need to do a bit more research because you sound like a moron.

#113 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:50AM — Rudager

Shut the fu*k up bi*ch. I dont need your lip, I'm not your husband. You are shielding your kids from something they need to already be looking at. Every wonder why kids look for daddys porn stash?

#114 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:52AM — kdm

This is thebest picture I've seen. Nipple ring fashioned in the shape of the sun and that part of her costume is clearly fastened on with press studs for easy removal.

Pity they didn't show both, because the show was like a halftime sedative.

You all are looking at janet's boob---What the hell is that in Justin's Pants?

#116 — February 2, 2004 @ 00:57AM — rb

Nice pic of the snaps so the material can come off, I guess CBS outdid the FOX lingerie bowl?

shaun -
sorry to have wasted my time here. I see what type of mentality dominates this site. I have three teenage girls and one of them had to witness and was disgusted by the display put on tonight. I meant no insult to the people of Germany by the reference to Hitler, I was just hoping to make a point to a decidedly biased individual.

#118 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:04AM — Just Some Guy

Boobs aside (I found nothing offensive about it, just surprised it happened), I found nothing of real value during this halftime show. It seemed to be full of the usual trend of hip-hop crap and not-so-veiled sexual overtones. I can't say I expected P.Diddy to do anything more than the same self-aggrandizement he has shown a propensity for... and he didn't let me down... this time it was using Toni Basil's "Mickey" to give himself "props"... pathetic.

#119 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:05AM — Mac Diva [URL]

Oh, some of the, shall we say, very conservative sites, have been all over it since it happened, Natalie. They live in fear of little brown jugs.

I think baring the boob was a cheap trick, but hardly the end of the world.

#120 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:06AM — JJackson

Are you ready for the "real" surprise? That boob belonged to Michael Jackson! That's right, that was Michael frikkin Jackson...

And Justin has the hots for him...

#121 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:14AM — Rudager

What is wrong with Justin!!! What a moron, who looks at the right breast. Honestly, who, everyone in here knows we wanted to see the left one. Stupid moron.

#122 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:16AM — HW Saxton Jr.

So it was a "stunt" boob then, was it?

#123 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:18AM — Shaun

Ward, I think your an overprotective over berring vanilla parent who enjoys things the way they are, god forbid an exposed boob, or another thing I had forgotten about.. Have you seen nypd blue? when the show first started? Or even chicago hope when they were doing breast surgury and showed an exposed boob, or get this, on ABC when they aired how to do a breast exam? Oh no more boobs. Get use to it for god sakes. Your making this a bigger deal about it then it actually is. My point is this, we are sheltered, censored and people freak out when someone breaks the rules. And there in my opinion should be MORE people pushing the issue further and further. US free? really? not with what we watch. I should send you a teen magazine from germany.. You'd get a kick out of it. I think you should watch hbo's shocking commercials from around the world, you'll see we're locked in a shell. Because of the over berring vanilla hush hush shelter my children parents like yourself.

#124 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:19AM — Mac Diva [URL]

Jackson's career is already benefitting. Radio station demand for the song she was singing is way up across the pond. And, it is night here in the states. Wait until tomorrow.

#125 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:20AM — kdm

risque yes, disgusting no. Come on, it was one quick flash of a small breast (depending on the size of your TV) that wasn't even fully naked thanks to big jewelery. Pity I switched off as soon as Timberland came on and missed it.

I've seen riskier music videos from Aguilera, Britney etc. and more transparent fashion every Oscar night.

You would think it was a couple having live sex in the middle of the Reliant from the furore.

In truth this was probably a cheap way to get some attention back on the continuously sad MTV networks in the face of new competition.Won't get me watching again but it will work for some. I expect MTV are loving the attention they are getting. Before the incident I didn't even know MTV were involved now you can't escape the fact.

If you're that upset don't give MTV the press they want and just let it go unmentioned. After all they figured they only get one shot so they pulled off the biggest thing they could. Not enough to get them in legal water but enough to get them attention.

Either way it's been and gone. Stop making a fuss. If you feel strongy enough to write and complain to a network about a singular breast then you also have time to devote your attention to the millions of other more immediate and worthwhile problems the world has.

i must agree with most of the people here. what is the big deal. its just a fucking tit.

i mean if you don't wanna see it then turn off your fucking tvs

and comment to ward clark aka dumbass

know what your speaking about before you spout out like a little nancy. just turn off your tv if you dont want to see it. you know what, stay in your house don't go out at all. and why don't you home school your kids too. if they aren't already. the worlds a big place, if you don't know

and to comment on the nudity in foreign countries. overseas it is very common for this type of showing and quite mild. unlike america they have a real issue on showing violence. now, think about that. i would rather have nudity shown to my kids than violence anyday.

#128 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:30AM — Shaun

100% agree with both posts. And I to would rather show natural nudity to my children then violence. Ward remember when you were born, werent you naked or were you clothed? being that they dont have a mall in the womb I think you were like every one else born naked, and natural, it is society that branded naked as "for" sex. And did I hear you right, teenage girls?? I think you should tell them about that before they start growing.

#129 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:30AM — kdm

something else to think about. In the UK every NC-17 rated movie is an 18 rating. That means that unless you are 18 or over you can't see the movie even if you're parents go with you. Never hurt business there and watching a movie is more relaxing when you have no crying kids in horror films.

So in the US we let any kid in to see the same kind of movie as long as their idiotic parents bring them in. Then people get upset because there's too much offensive material on TV.

Try watching a NC-17 horror flick (gratuitous nudity included of course!) when you have parents with their toddlers and they start crying. And they look surprised.

Idiots.

Plus in the UK you can't show violent movies and TV before 9pm so the kiddies will be in bed. I've lost count how many NC-17 rated action flicks are on Sunday afternoon. Swearing and nudity elimnated of course but bullet ridden bodies flying all over are still there.

Yeah and one breast is going to be the downfall of society...

#130 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:33AM — kdm

my mistake, in the UK every R rated movie is an 18.

#131 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:39AM — JJackson

#132 — February 2, 2004 @ 01:39AM — kdm

"your" - "you're" (contraction of "you"and "are")
"berring" - "bearing"
"surgury" - "surgery"
You should have spent more time learning the English language in school, instead of looking at porno. (From Germany, no doubt, where Pornography is "natural")
By the way, if raping little old ladies becomes socially acceptable in these other countries you seem so fond of, will you volunteer your Grandmother to be the ground-breaker for the United States?
Just a thought.

#140 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:00AM — Bspell

Why doesn't someone let Ward in on the spelling correction theory of late internet discoverers.

This day and age, it's better to type "on the fly" and post as it becomes more personal than "pretending" you are smart by running it through a spellchecker.

Not picking on you, cause personally I like your idea of raping old ladies, but am suprised you would suggest such a thing.

Still it hold merit, and I'll bet legislation will be in the works not long after lawmakers unearth the wealth of ideas spewing from this board.

#141 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:04AM — kdm

I hope you were being ironic Ward.

"Pornography" and "Grandmother" are not proper nouns so they shouldn't be upper case.

If the only argument you can make is to attack typing ability (and lack of effort to use a spellchecker) then you really should call it a night.

Or at least argue against my point as to why you are shocked by a breast but not excessively violent TV during the day.

Or the constant swearing of the players in the Super Bowl you were watching. Hey, kids can lip read too!

#142 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:06AM — greggsasaki

your comments ward, sound very similar to another idiot i know in another forum

#143 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:07AM — Doctor Itch

Thank you for correcting my spelling with an exact duplicate of the word while keeping the appearance that you were indeed correct!

And think about buying vasoline in a six-pack.

#144 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:10AM — Shaun

My god, it has come to hold up my grammar and spelling?! Please your pulling strings here. Watching porno?! now come on. Raping old ladies?!!? It is you who seem to insist on correlating "nude" with "sex", perhaps you have some serious sexual issues you need to go over with a therapist... Make sure you spell everything correctly on that admission form.

#145 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:13AM — ward clark

I do not need a spell checker, since I graduated high school, unlike some of the others I see submitting messages to this site. It all goes back to the same theory. It isn't a big deal until it affects YOU. True, this is a free society and we all have certain freedoms. However, MY freedom is to only view controversial (kon-trow-verse-yee-all) material at MY discretion. I would not have been watching, nor allowed my daughter to watch the pitiful descent into primal lust of anatomy that was displayed tonight. Would any of you "modern" thinkers have been offended if an evangelist were the "special" guest tonight and had given a short sermon?
Certain social aspects should only be viewed or observed at one's OWN discretion, NOT crammed down your throat by the media every time you turn on the "public" television stations.

#146 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:16AM — Shaun

Well I think your a bad parent for knowing the risks MTV airs on their station, and yet still watch the halftime show that was created by who? Oh yeah MTV as it was shown at the beginning of the show.

#148 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:17AM — Shaun

Well I think your a bad parent for knowing the risks MTV airs on their station, and yet still watch the halftime show that was created by who? Oh yeah MTV as it was shown at the beginning of the show. AND still have the gaul to post your distaste for a segment by mtv.

#149 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:18AM — JJackson

Your teenage girls pretended to be modest while their thoughts turned to pulling down Justin's pants. Of course I could be way off, they may have instead just simply enjoyed seeing Janet's boob. Then again, they may not have thought twice about it had you not acted like a fool trying to show them how much you disapprove. I'm sure they'll pay more attention next time, and without you being there.

Fool yourself, and there is no greater lie.

#150 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:23AM — kdm

I wouldn't have been bothered by a sermon, I would have just switched it off as i did when Timberland arrived on scene. Although Kid Rock was pretty torturous too.

You could apply your thinking to the very point you were making. I don't want to have to suffer other people trying to force their religion down my throat but it happens in ads, so-called impartial news shows and at my front door.

But...

I don't whine about it like a child I just accept it as part of society and move on. It doesn't cause me any physical harm and it's easily avoided.

Incidentally Ward, why (if you graduated high school as you loudly boast) do you not know about differentiating between common and proper nouns?

#151 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:25AM — Rodney King

Can't we all just get along

#152 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:26AM — Shaun

I think "it" ward is trying to snap on the next person to misspell "masterbate" - "masterbate".

#153 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:27AM — Captain Sand

If we all got along, I wouldn't be having so much fun wiping my arse with turbans.

#154 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:27AM — echo

I'd like to say, that I would rather my child see the nude form, in all it's skin-bearing glory (notice my spelling here), than to have them see sitcoms that glorify disrespect or have them watch something that- again glorifies- random violence.

If I were you, I would be making sure my teenage daughters being exposed to things in a positive way (i.e. not all skin = flesh), so that they aren't shell-shocked when they enter college. It's happened time and time again where overly sheltered kids end up "going wild" in college. I believe you've heard of the videos?

I also think that seeing a forty-something woman exhibiting "sex appeal" to be less disconcerting and damaging than seeing 16-18 yr old girls exhibiting "sex appeal" (such as is popular now), since sex is so abhorrent to you.

Maybe you could sponsor street-fighting in your neighborhood. Your own fight club, to keep your kids from worrying/learning about boobs and sex.

Also- typos happen. Not everyone is as anal about double-checking quick posts. I very often spell the as teh when I get going- but I don't stress over it.

MTV half time... Who would have thought MTV would do something like that?

#155 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:29AM — kdm

No Rodney, apparently not.

That's because people take the smallest of things and blow it way out of proportion.

#161 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:39AM — kdm

there's the irony thing again Ward.

If you really think "every person has the right to do or think as they please as long as it causes no reel harm to anybody else" then why are you making such a big deal about it?

Were your daughters harmed by seeing a small blurry bosom for a nanosecond?

More so than seeing a guy living in a dumpster in your city or kids dying of starvation in an apartment building on the news?

Incidentaly for future posts you may want to think about what you write. If you plan to contradict your point or offer theories that can be used against you in a subsequent post, it's best not to make a big deal about them to begin with.

#162 — February 2, 2004 @ 02:41AM — Mac Diva [URL]

LOL! kdm is kicking somebody's arse, verbally and analytically.

This sentence is a doozy, Ward:

I would not have been watching, nor allowed my daughter to watch the pitiful descent into primal lust of anatomy that was displayed tonight.

If a quick glimpse of one boob is all that, then I suppose the Earth will go nova if two are bared simultaneously.

Notice the less than sterling grammar, imperfect ones. 'Lust of anatomy'? Please.

Can't speak for the current generation, but when I was growing up, the girls with fathers who behaved as if children really are found in a cabbage patch were often the wildest. Here's hoping Wardette learns to use condoms, or it may be Grandpappy Ward very early.

Say, Mark, did halftime become less boring after you posted this entry?

incidentally Ward I found your use of the s-word to be totally uneccessary. Even though I couldn't see all the letters I still knew what it said.

I may have to write a letter of complaint since I logged on to this message board expecting deep socio-political commentary on the CBS scandal and it's ramifications on the future downfall of cultured society. I certainly didn't expect the use of the s-word. I am totally disgusted. How can people sit back and let this sort of verbal degradation go unchallenged on the internet?

the Janet thing would have been far better if she had volunatarily ripped off both cups.

The sight of two entire teams fighting each other to get back on the field as fast as possible would have been hilarious.

In fact I expect the Panthers are doubly pissed, since not only did they lose but they missed seeing Janet Jackson topless from about 10 yards.

Man, to be there when they heard about that as well would have been a double whammmy.

#170 — February 2, 2004 @ 03:06AM — kdm

Ah, yes Mac Diva thanks for pointing this out

Ward:
"I would not have been watching, nor allowed my daughter to watch the pitiful descent into primal lust of anatomy that was displayed tonight."

Can somebody tell me what the point of cheerleaders is again?

Aren't they there to appeal to the primal lust in every single man (and a few women) who were watching that game last night? Or just give reasons for pompoms to exist?

I've noticed (in passing of course)they are quite flexible. Some of the poses they get into are quite provocative but I'm sure that's by accident and doesn't happen at every single football game in the US both professionally and at schools up and down the entire country.

That would be just obscene.

#171 — February 2, 2004 @ 03:07AM — Norm

Adding my 2 cents:

1) When you see it on video it's so obvious that the stunt was planned, good grief why would they insult our intelligence by claiming it as a regretable accident?! Please!

2) I don't see anything wrong with breast on TV either. There is lots of content on TV that someone is going to find offensive. (For example, I find all the bug-eating and maggot-wearing that they're doing on these reality shows disgusting and offensive.) That's not a good judge of whether or not it should be on TV. A better question is, does showing it harm anyone?

Here's what I've never understood. Showing occasionaly nudity (not sex, mind you) is going to do exactly what to someone? Ok, so my 5-year-old is watching television. Precisely what ill-effect is seeing a breast going have on him or her?

In many ways, the CLOTHING that girls are wearing these days is more sexual than an exposed breast. And there is plenty of sexual content on TV, even if it doesn't *show* anything. What's the difference?

The real reason why American television broadcasters don't show nudity is because this country has significant areas where it is still stuck in the religous conservatism, and the broadcasters don't want to lose viewership. That's it folks - it's not for any real moral reason, its just strategic marketing.

When are the religious conservatives of this country going to figure out they don't make the rules for the rest of us? Perhaps when they are finally outnumbered.

#172 — February 2, 2004 @ 03:20AM — kdm

Well said Norm. Yep those maggot eating reality shows I find quite offensive too but I'm not going to whine about it because it's not worth the energy.

You are spot on with religious conservatism running TV markets.

Going OT this also reminds me of the banning of the word "evolution" from Georgia schools. Ridiculous as many have pointed out.

Religious conservatives had better be careful. Before they start criticizing other countries for their reiligious barbarism (banning music and singing for example) they had better take a look at what ridiculous lengths of religious based control they are enforcing.

They may find they are not that far behind.

With that I'm off to the bed, sure to have dreams filled with star ringed nipples...

#173 — February 2, 2004 @ 03:24AM — Thor

Shaun ,

I have read all the posts and agree with what you are saying. However you claim "Hell my parents watched Kennedy getting shot live."

There were no televisions cameras along the parade route. It was only later when movie camera film had been developed did any footage appear.

The first time on US television that a murder was filmed and watched live was the next day when Lee Harvey Oswald was murdered by Jack Ruby.

One boob, big deal. It kills me to see kids so sheltered sometimes by over-protective parents that wants to keep them from knowing and learning the inevitable. Why do we do this to kids? I live in Oklahoma which is a main part of the "Bible-Belt" and I wonder why people strive so hard to change things that they know they can't control(in the long run). Like people getting upset over naked-ness on tv, they should be slapped upside the head and need to realize that the world changes. I could care less what gets shown on tv but what makes me sick is when people think that when they go out into the real world, or watch tv that they are not gonna get a taste of the changes in our culture. Okay wait, let's put ourselves in the shoes of an overprotective parent.....okay now let us have our children learn the "history in the making" events in Iraq as we show live violence and non-stop coverage of war on tv but frown on a little boobage on a sport mostly driven by alcohol, men and excitement....well that makes sense. You can't have your cake and eat it too, by which I mean that we show a change in our culture by showing live war but can't show change in the way we represent as entertainment.
I'm not trying to upset anyone with this message post, I am just trying to help peel back the protective coating the soccer-moms and censors have layered on thick in every type of medium we have.

Just playing devil's advocate here but I'd think CBS has to claim it was an accident and not just for PR damage control. Theoretically, Janet (Ms. Jackson if you're nasty) could face public indecency charges from just about every jurisdiction the broadcast was shown. So CBS claiming an accident keeps Ms Jackson (cause I'm nasty) out of some legal binds.

hell, even the Chevy Aveo commercial was more entertaining.

The comments began in an interesting vein and then a bunch of fools dragged it down into the gutter. But that appears to be where the half time show belonged. I never watch the half time show. That's the time to go to the bathroom, get another beer and let the dog out. It is always just a waste of time in the middle of the game!

#191 — February 2, 2004 @ 12:50PM — butthole

DAMN IT!! NO boobies

#192 — February 2, 2004 @ 12:57PM — Hey

It was planned! Maybe she will be cited for indecent exposure! They needed to boost the ratings somehow! Anyways, the game was TONS more exciting!

Holy cow... I need to turn off email notifications when people comment to my posts. When one like this explodes, 192 messages in my mailbox when I return to my computer on Monday is nuts.

Anyway, it turns out I was right and wrong about the superbowl half-time show. It was boring. This "controversy" is a big-time joke if you ask me. I am sure MTV meant to do it. I am not so sure CBS and the NFL knew about it. Either way, I can't understand 1. Why is anyone surprised? 2. Does anyone really care? 3. Was anyone other than Kid Rock and Timberlake actually using a live microphone?

Question number 3 should be a bigger controversy. Why are we so enthralled by the Janets and Britneys of the world who think it is good enough to show up and dance without singing their songs?

#194 — February 2, 2004 @ 13:46PM — G

this is so friggin ridiculous, all these people so making a big deal out of the "oh the moral fiber of the country" give me a break , it was a tit and as for the moral fabric, i think countless ads for erectile dysfunction and alcoholic beverages, which contribute heavily to thousands of deaths every year, are just as objectionable if you are gonna play the moral card, yet these ads are celebrated, puhlease people be consistent with your fake outrage,
if people were more outraged by things that actually mattered maybe the world would be a better place, but its easier to cry about an exposed tit then it is to focus on issues that matter

#195 — February 2, 2004 @ 14:18PM — George Bush

What is the big deal? It is just a TIT !!

#196 — February 2, 2004 @ 15:01PM — Who Cares

How big of losers are all of you for getting off on the site of one single boob? Who cares who saw it it happened...but the people who continue to dream about this little titty at night NEED HELP

#197 — February 2, 2004 @ 15:13PM — Chris Wilson

G,

You have a good point. But I think what is at root of Janet Jackson's exposure of her boob is simple. As viewers, we were all universally exploited against our will. We were led to believe (by CBS, by MTV by the NFL) that the Super Bowl halftime show was a family show. Most families do not want their children to see seductive dancing, exposed and pierced breasts, tattoos, etc... More importantly, CBS used the Super Bowl show as a way to blatantly exploit/promote it's upcoming Grammy show and Janet Jackson. Such controversy breeds conversation, talk and eventually viewers/record sells. We can't even watch a football game anymore without producers/singers/entertainers exploiting our every waking moment, offending us, distracting us, trying to take up our time and take our money. The exposed breast was just another way that we, as viewers were violated by an ever-increasing, overwhelming, consumer-driven culture. We were morally bankrupt many years before. Now it's just being thrust at us without warning, simply because that's the only way they can. Thus, we are losing control of our personal lives by corporations without an ounce of respect for the very people/customers that keep them afloat....

I don't have a problem with boobies but I hope MTV and CBS, hell all of viacom burns, because they're programing SUCKS. Oh well. At least no more MTV half time shows.

And email I just gotten... from cassadysm@netzero.com... Good thing netzero bounced the message. I'll be sure to still send ya a nice message with an attachment :)

You're an idiot. How do you think Sodom and Gomorroh came to be. Everybody trying to push the envelope. People become desensitized and soon everything is acceptable. It's sad that you can't see that. Makes it easier for you to rationalize the stack of adult magazines on your nightstand, huh? And the fact that you base your argument on what others are doing. What a follower you are. Try taking the high road some time. You might like it and yourself a little bit more.

Heres ya response jackass

You go out of your way to drop me an email about something about censorship and what my opinion is on it in America, and I'm the idiot?? My question is this, why do you immediately run to sexual issues when a naked member is aired on television? Perhaps your over sensitized? After all America AND the Canada are the only countries with this hang-up. And based on the fact of you judging me, I have no problem sending you this email even though I was trying not to email anyone until the virus on my computer was removed. Have a nice day. Now I'm off with my wife to look at the stack of magazines on our nightstand. Fucking moron.....

#201 — February 2, 2004 @ 16:43PM — i_love_the_tits

ok, why was ward so offended that her DAUGHTER saw a BOOB! shes a female for christ sakes! she will see her own boobs in no time, unless for some reason ward is an alien or some other species where the female doesnt grow boobs.

how many of us saw a boob b4 we were sexually "active"? its a normal human thing, and like someone else previously stated, we are born naked, so why is it shunned so much?

if it werent for this "modern" world we live in, there would be no such thing as clothes, and we would be naked like the rest of the animals out there... and believe it or not... yes, we are animals.

#202 — February 2, 2004 @ 16:56PM — Shaun

Exactly oh by the way, I found the streaker guy its not on my site but here ya go http://www.btls.com/bubba_.html ... I dont know what wards issue was or the chick that emailed me. honestly who cares.. Really. Personally my wife and I laughed our asses off.

#203 — February 2, 2004 @ 17:05PM — Neighked

Well said Chris Wilson.
Personally Janet should have done video a la "Paris Hilton" style. ( made a video and release it just before the show airs creating curiosity and a buzz.)
Viewers would have had more control and everyone would have been satisfied.

#204 — February 2, 2004 @ 17:29PM — Mac Diva [URL]

You are entitled to your opinion, but Chris Wilson's remarks seem silly to me. Professional (and college) football epitomizes a shallow, market-driven society. And, he turns around and criticizes an unscripted moment in a halftime show? The very same criticisms apply, even moreso, to what he is defending -- the money machine known as professional (and college) sports. His cluelessness is just what I expect from somewhat who thinks Ayn Rand was an intellectual.

Barger, I know you are opposed to doing research on the grounds Ayn Rand never did, but believe you should at least post the correct ages of the participants. Jackson is 38. Justin Timberlake is 23. She would have needed to start pretty early to be his mother.

#205 — February 2, 2004 @ 17:34PM — Chris Wilson

I will let Mac Diva's comments speak for themselves......

It's not personal Mac Diva, and posts from other rooms should appropriately stay there.

Have a good evening everyone.

#206 — February 2, 2004 @ 18:19PM — Mac Diva [URL]

Well, someone needs to distinguish between this incident and real examples of immorality. Today's sport news leads with stories about basketball and football programs at colleges using sex parties to recruit student athletes. And, let us not forget the tragic murder of young basketball player Patrick Dennehy, lured to a college program by illicit payments. His coach tried to get the other players to claim he was a drug dealer after his death for 'the good of the program.' That is corruption that deserves to be condemned at the loudest volume. A peek at some woman's mammary gland isn't.

It is as if Right Wingers like Chris Wilson live in some Never Never Land instead of the real world. Sports are as about as pure as sewer water.

#207 — February 2, 2004 @ 19:25PM — kcgpk01

ok whats the deal people! my god i come to one of my fav web pages to read about the super bowl and find bickering like two little kids. yes it was a bad thing for janets bare breast to be exposed but my good look at eveything out there its everywhere now there are worse things on the discovery chanel arnt there? i agree it shouldnt of happined but come on should people really argue about that?

#208 — February 2, 2004 @ 20:10PM — mike

Forget the quality and quantity of Jackson's boob. One of the things that seems to be missed in this controversy about Timberlake's ripping Jackson's boob covering off is that kids - and society - are watching their 'heros' do things they shouldn't be doing. The action of ripping off a woman's clothing is never an action that can be condoned in any way. Nothing justifies it. And kids watching the halftime show saw famous people doing just that with nothing to indicate it was an 'accident'. How do you 'accidentally reach over and pull on someone's clothes in that manner. In our society we don't pull on other's clothing like that. It's a precursor to rape and it sets an extremely poor example for, and example of, our society.

#209 — February 2, 2004 @ 20:15PM — Nelson [URL]

The showing Janet Jackson's BREAST is the best thing to happen on CBSTBS and all other stations for high ratings.
This sort of thing is just what the public needed to see to buy the DVD when it will be issued. I really wish
her breast was not censored on tv.
She is a beautiful woman with a beautiful concpet(her and her breast).
Now say with me her breast are beautiful. Thanks Justin!!!!
From a true Janet fan supported buy other fans in the whole United Sates.

Stop being a priss janet jackson did a show with justin timberlake and her top ripped things do happen ladies and gentlemen I don't think she wanted you to see it anyway if she did she would have been in Playboy magazine. You guys are too uptight because of an incident trust me if she wanted to let you see it she wouldn't be covering up her breast thank you. And she didn't spice up the half time because of a breast showing either. It was an accident they do things on videos that your kids see so what's the difference. Janet was a great dancer as always just say oops and go on with your lives damn! Ebani

#213 — February 2, 2004 @ 20:37PM — curious

The ripping of her clothes is quite suggestive of rape. What do ya'll think about that aspect of the issue?

#214 — February 2, 2004 @ 20:44PM — Ebani Dawson

I disagree about Janet jackson's performance. Everybody was up in arms about it. It was not that bad a piece of her clothing her top was ripped it was an accident. You guys are such priss if she wanted to show her breasts she could've done Playboy magazine I don't think she really wanted to reveal her her chest on tv she has better things to do. Not only that videos have been made with dancing and the kids seem to watch it so why are you having a hard time that it happened. get over yourselves it was not that bad. Get a life get a grip damn prisses. Ebani

What is the big deal about a breast. Most kids have seen worst. The thing that people need to be upset about is the fact that Kid Rock was wearing the
American Flag as a shirt. That is not right by any means.

#221 — February 3, 2004 @ 01:26AM — RAY

What a might fine breast it is at that!!

#222 — February 3, 2004 @ 01:49AM — Mel

They say that Janet's spokeswoman, Jennifer Holiner, said a red lace garment was supposed to remain when Timberlake tore off the outer covering of her bustier... but I think that is completely false. Reason being, if you take a close look, the piece that Justin took off shows to the camera the inner side of the piece (the part that was in contact with her breast). You will see that the red lace does not extend throughout the whole leathered piece. A way you can tell it is the inner side is by how Justin ripped it off (four fingers having to have grabbed the inner side) and the other side of the buttons to clasp onto the bustier is seen, and where the red lace begins at the top you see no silver decors. The link below shows the picture in which I am referring to.

Hopefully this link works:

Mac Diva,

What we are discussing here are not my own political views - which might surprise you - or the condition of sports in our society. It is whether or not the stunt Janet Jackson pulled during the Super Bowl halftime show was offensive. I am not offended by nudity. What I am offended by is a blatant, crass attempt by Jackson and CBS to purposely create a controversy all for the sake of selling records and promoting a television show. Whether you realize it or not, we were exploited and played. Our children were exploited and played. The Super Bowl, for better or worse, has become a huge cultural event in American society. When someone is given the honor of performing during that event, much like the honor of performing the Star Spangled Banner, one does not take advantage of such a situation simply to promote their own self interests. MTV and CBS both took advantage of such a situation to exploit us, promoting their brand of mediocrity. Madonna has utilized such shock tactics over the years to pomote herself and her unmemorable music. Britney has done the same and now Janet is following suit. While such stunts before took place in the realm of cable TV, this stunt was on regular TV, CBS, during the halftime of the Super Bowl. CBS is as much to blame as anyone, as they have been frothing at the mouth for the youth market for years. Our society today is driven by such a youth market, and thus we are force-fed poor music, poor films and the kind of deplorable halftime show we had to uncomfortably sit through on Sunday. It has angered many Americans and rightfully so. We were not warned, and thus we were taken advantage of.

Corruption in sports has been around forever, well hell, since the Black Sox Scandal in the early 20th century. So you are beating a dead horse there my friend. MTV, CBS and Janet Jackson took advantage of us to promote their own self interests. They did so in a crass and offensive way, during a program that was intended for the entire family. Their's a bad smell that taints the entire affair, and it has nothing to do with sports corruption, Baylor basketball or collegiate sex parties - which frankly take place in more places than just the athletic dorm.......

#225 — February 3, 2004 @ 07:13AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

in a crass and offensive way

not unlike the promotion of that stupid survivor telecast that they managed to shoehorn in during every single 15 second 'downtime' slot.

exploited? c'mon. the superbowl on tv is capitalism on steroids....and we all knew that before turning it on.

#226 — February 3, 2004 @ 09:54AM — Tiffany

I dont understand why everyone is making such a big deal of the Janet boob display. I dont think that it was a big deal. First of all remember that MTV hosted it, and on MTV things like this are not too horrific. And second of all if your kids were watching then you should use this time to explain to them what boobies are. The show was great and you old boring people need to lighten up. The world will not end for your child seeing a tit.

#227 — February 3, 2004 @ 10:35AM — Xavier

I agree there was nothing wrong with her doing that...this is a MANS TYPE OF SPORTING EVENT...if kids are watching then their parents must not mind them watching the players rough house each other...Kids like to reenact what they see on tv just like wrestling or whatever and if they were too young to see a nip from far away, then they're too young to watch such rough and semi violent sports...have em' watch ice skating or something :p what about that...or what about brittney and madonna kissing on stage tongues and all...that's worse than an almost fully covered nip...from far away...so what's the problem...The only problem I have with it is...they had such a faggot rip it off :P Janet is disgustingly out of his league and I mean disgustingly...I can't stand that butt plug...

#228 — February 3, 2004 @ 10:45AM — Xavier [URL]

Oh yeah here...follow this URL...this is the better page to get the best and most high res pics of this wonderful "mishap" ;-) Oh...and what I meant about the madonna/brittney incident is, yeah the superbowl is watched by many but so is mtv and more often...think about that... :P

#229 — February 3, 2004 @ 12:45PM — BRICKLAYER

Hey, they're exposed all the time in my house...usually there's a little Bricklayer attached to them...which surprisingly does not always kill the excitement.

PS. Hey Mac, way on up there, you said you saw two that looked just like 'em everyday, and I am unclear whether they are your very own, or your dinner partner's, however, either way, I salute you!

#230 — February 3, 2004 @ 12:59PM — ComeOn

How did bare breasts get offensive anyways?

To me, they are beautiful.

Some of the same people complaining about their kids seeing a bare breast, are the same ones that got pleasure from the government displaying the dead bodies of "WhoDay" and "CooSay" (sic).

Some of these conservatives have no problem with invading a soverign nation, killing many of their inhabitants, and well as a lot of our own soldiers, and they still support the STUPID SOB that thinks he is making the US safer from terrorists by killing people.

#231 — February 3, 2004 @ 14:18PM — Doug

I have one fundamental question regarding super bowl halftime shows in general. How does the NFL come to the conclusion that anyone is even remotely interested in the lip synching glitteratti they put forward as entertainment at these events? Does anyone really want to watch this crap? The music is terrible and the talent questionable. These halftime performances a just plain weird. I for one would be more interested in watching old men compete to see who can throw the football the furthest for money. As a football fan and proud American, I am pleading with the NFL to please stop doing this. It's really starting to creep me and other fans out!

doesnt anyone care that the superbowl is a family program--i hope jackson and the the rest of the vulger dancing, crouch grabbing people find another outlet for the vulgar behavior besides family time--why cant dancers just dance--why do they have to do the movements to pretend they are having sex--grow up--save it for the bedroom-shows how desparate some people are for attention, go see a psychiatrist and keep your filth out of the public eye

#237 — February 3, 2004 @ 22:03PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

since when is the superbowl a family program? cripes, whatever happened to the days when guys could get together, drink too much beer, slob down some pizza and wings, gawk at the cheerleaders and, oh ya...watch the football game?

...all the while cussin' and such at the refs.

this aint "Up With People", despite recent past attempts at such halftime weirdness.

#238 — February 4, 2004 @ 08:58AM — dan

regarding to what janet exposed to geriatrics and nurtured children my perspective would be that not only is she insulting us as people but her infimacy has gone over the border to the limit where naked has become intolerable and unsulting towards fellow minority-americans.
