In basic, you are limited in what you can and cannot have and PDA's, cellphones, ect. are not allowed... But, blogging by PDA could be perfect for someone in your friend's position. Pocket PCs and pre-Palm OS 5 PDAs can use services such as Avantblog and Vagablog to post to most weblogs fairly easily. A blog entry posted from bivouac or right before going into the tear gas tent might well be a first for the blogosphere.
