Blogging Basic Training

jeremy.jpg A couple days ago I launched a new blog for my friend Jeremy. I've known Jeremy for around 6 years and he's always been interested in computing and technology and was about to set up a blog of his own before he left for Army Basic training on the 20th. We both decided it would be a cool idea to "blog" his training, but there was one problem. The Army relegates the time of its recruits and does not for very good reason allow them free access to the internet or in some cases phone calls home. So that means that Jeremy is stuck "blogging" in much the same way that countless other soldiers before him have... the only difference is I turn around and post them via Movable Type to his site. So if you're curious about the experience of a fresh recruit at Army Basic (from the perspective of a guy who would more likely be found reading Slashdot than Guns and Ammo) check out www.JeremyHall.com. And keep him in your prayers.

Joel, I've been knocking around with blogging by PDA with hardly any positive results, because I have a new PDA the software hasn't caught up with yet. But, blogging by PDA could be perfect for someone in your friend's position. Pocket PCs and pre-Palm OS 5 PDAs can use services such as Avantblog and Vagablog to post to most weblogs fairly easily. A blog entry posted from bivouac or right before going into the tear gas tent might well be a first for the blogosphere. And, among all the gear, a PDA will hardly be noticeable.

hardly noticeable, maybe. Against regs, most likely.

In basic, you are limited in what you can and cannot have and PDA's, cellphones, ect. are not allowed...

An interesting idea, certainly... a feasible one, I doubt it.

Yeah - From Jeremy's letters so far he says that even using the payphone is pretty restricted. But a cool idea.
