Dennis Miller's first CNBC show
Published January 27, 2004
Dennis Miller just did his first CNBC show. Overall, he made a pretty good start.
He set the tone with an opening monologue trying to explain his basic underlying political thoughts. He's a comedian with a show on a news network. Thus, it made some sense that he gave his first introduction on the show as a fairly serious, sincere explanation of his basic political outlook while bouncing a chimp on his lap. Among other things, he apparently intends to have Ellie the chimp scampering across the stage at random intervals wearing shorts corresponding to the current national terror alert level.
His most striking comment of the night was in the midst of the opening explanation of his now somewhat more generally conservative outlook. Paraphrasing, he said that he was no longer confident enough of his own guesswork to be a good liberal. Chew for awhile on the implications of that.
Overall, he seems to have a pretty strong idea of the tone he's looking for, somewhat distinct from his former work. Essentially he seems intent on a serious show, actually talking about issues of the day in a thoughtful manner- but with a lightness of tone. To put it differently, he had plenty of funny remarks, but except for a brief Weekend Update type section, the discussions were distinctly NOT just setups for the jokes.
His first guest was Governor Schwarzenegger. They chatted amicably (Miller worked on his campaign- and said so first thing in their interview). They were talking about the upcoming bond issue and a little bit about immigration. There was certainly no gratuitous Democrat bashing.
He also had a panel discussion with David Horowitz, David Frum and Naomi Wolf. Obviously some of this over time will depend on the guest's behavior, but he seems to be trying to set up a sincere discussion rather than a debated. Ms. Wolf, for example, made some reasonable criticism about US intelligence and administration policies.

Hello? Serial groper Schwarzenegger and crazed racist Jew Horowitz as his first guests, and the guy has not shown his true colors? Only in far Right land. Barger you could not be farther out of touch with the political mainstream. Miller's show sounds like Free Republic for TV.
I can only take it from context that you mean Jew as an epithet in that comment.
Yowsa, Diva- "Jew Horowitz"? That seems a bit much, even for you.
Yes, Miller is intending to show his "true colors." He is not intending or pretending to be "neutral," but rather honest.
Again, your utter lack of depth perception comes ringing right through. Do you think that Schwarzenegger, for example, is a big hero at Free Republic? I bet not. Again, you go all rabbit-ass crazy about anybody who does not share your cheesy racialist left wing nonsense being practically Hitler.
It's not Arnold that's going on about "Jew Horowitz."
If my review lacks "fire" it is because the show lacked fire. That's not what he seems to be going for.
Harp seals rule!
If my review lacks "fire" it is because the show lacked fire.
Not an acceptable excuse for lacking fire. I suspect you get many offers for Viagra, Barger. Perhaps it is time to place that secret order.
I make no apologies for describing Horowitz accurately. He has become the far Right's favorite hit Jew by being their water carrier for racism. And, yes, being a Jew is important to why he was assigned that role. The guy is the H.K. Edgerton of that movement.
Joe, is your brain as small as your blog entries? I referred to Horowitz as a Jew because he is a Jew. Furthermore, he has made his reputation on the fact he is a Jew. Unless you mean Horowitz is insulting himself by defining himself as a Jew, your complaint makes no sense. Which, unfortunately, is typical of your complaints.
And if that is your explanation than I'll congratulate you on making the right decision on giving up your somewhat unremarkable legal career. You probably weren't cut out for it.
DENNIS MILLER MUST DIE.
Yes, but then, we all must. Hopefully later rather than sooner.
I just want to congratulate CSNBC for having the courage to finally hire a talk show host with conservative views. This is a point of view that is not represented well on TV today.
Why, if Dennis Miller can be on, why can't the networks have the guts to hire people like Larry Kudlow, Sean Hamity, Joe Scarborough, Bill O'Reilly, Shepard Smith, Don Imus, Fred Barnes, Brit Hume, Neil Cavuto, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingram, Bernie Goldberg, and Lou Dobbs? You never see these people on TV at all. It's just totally biased.
Hiring Dennis Miller will go down as a lonely act of courage in today's overwhelmingly liberal news show world. I don't envy the fearless dissidents at CSNBC. They have paved a path for us all.
Thank you Natalie. That was a needed note of niceness.
Diva, not every show must have fire to make it good. Mister Rogers Neighborhood, for example, was an outstanding show- but obviously lacking "fire" or "edge" or anything like.
Horowitz' ethnic heritage appears to be his big point of note TO YOU. To most people, however, his original point of note comes from being a reformed left wing radical in his youth. So far as I know, no one but you cares about him being Hebrew.
I know that all black folks must be pinkos in order not to be Uncle Toms. Obviously all black people who think for themselves will come to exactly the same conclusions as you.
Does this hold true for Jews as well? Is Horowitz betraying Jews by being a conservative? Or are they allowed to honestly come to different conclusions?
I dunno, Nalalie, considering that Barger considers himself as being without any moral blemishes whatsoever, he may be planning to live forever, too.
Hebrew? That's a language, Barger.
And, stop trying to shift the topic from your lack of fire.
It's Viagra time,
I shall make it rhyme.
Barger lacks fire,
Can't act on desire.
Even when he eyes Ann Coulter,
Its a pebble, not a boulder.
No Diva, I do not consider myself to be without ANY moral blemish. I stole a cookie from the jar at age 5, and a few other minor sundry violations of perfection since then.
I do say that I am without major moral fault, which is obviously very different. I specifically reject the Christian notion that anyone who has ever made any small sin is EVIL and deserves only hell fire.
I'm a pretty good person. I try to treat others nice as much as possible, and I try to be truthful and [especially important] honest with myself.
I don't think I'd WANT to live forever, though. Depending on tricks, maybe a couple of hundred years would be nice, but that'd probably be about it. I'll be about ready to check out by that point.
According to dictionary.com, "Hebrew" means: A member or descendant of a Semitic people claiming descent from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; an Israelite; a Jew. Therefore, I think my usage is actually correct- though it is possible that I'm wrong.
I am also pleased that you have gone to the trouble to write me love poetry. That's sweet.

Miller's big thing is that 9/11 changed him. It changed all of us. I watched the towers fall from my roof in Brooklyn. But why would you compound tragedy by losing your common sense? I was all for invading Afghanistan (no need to convert anyone though Ms. Coulter) but this misadventure in Iraq has no relevance at all to a war on terror. "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin
Watching Dennis Miller on CNBC, it seemed like it should be on Comedy Central than a news channel. But then again, CNBC blows in the ratings and they need a booster shot.
DennisMiller's show is quite entertaining and remotely informative on the issues.
David Horowitz on the panel discussion lacks bite. He's rather tame compared to his ezine, FrontPage Magazine.
Miller's opening monologue is something to wait for like Leno or Letterman.
I counldn't stop laughing at the chimp pressing the button on the box with Howard Dean's screech.
Exactly, Reggie. The blood of innocent El Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans and Panaminians has hardly dried on American hands. And, we're up to our elbows in the blood of innocent men, women and children again. To want that to be the status quo, because you mistakenly believe it protects your precious arse, is to be a wimp. I haven't changed my mind about Miller at all.
Dennis Miller, you have a wonderful show, long overdue. I have a comment about the show on 1-30-04. Naomi Wolfe made me so mad I wanted to reach thru the Tv and slap the liberal nut.
Keep up the good work.
I will continue to watch your fine show. And bless you
Marilyn ---Pittsburgh
Dennis Miller making condescending pleas for softer language and more tactfulness? Wow, these are tough times we're living in to break a man so...
I'm sorry if Dennis wet his metaphorical pants post-9/11, but hopefully the war on terrorism is fighting to preserve something a bit grander than a monoclonal society that lacks free expression and support for difference of opinion.
Forrest- You seem to be referring to Miller's interview with Scott Ritter. Miller struck kind of a sour note with me on that one as well.
I'm prone to dislike Ritter, but watching him closely on this show, he didn't say anything utterly unreasonable. He disagreed with both the justification and the costs of America's actions in Iraq. There are some reasonable arguable points there, perhaps.
Even at that though, Miller was at least 80% friendly to Ritter. He had a mostly pretty good respectful exchange, except for that brief harsh moment. It made for interesting tv, at least.
Miller is living proof that Conservatism causes one's sense of humor to atrophy. He used to be funny and obnoxious. Now he's boring and obnoxious.
He makes Joe Scarborough look like Robin Williams.
I give the show about 6 months.
(Maybe Miller can do commentary on Monday Night Football?
Oh, he's already done that?
Nevermind.)
would be interested to know where all of you weigh in now that the show has a few months and some changes under its belt......
Beth, I'm reasonably satisfied. I don't watch him all the time, but I'll usually take him over the other news shows up against him, especially that jackass O'Reilly.
I liked the chimp, but it was a bit much for an ongoing thing.
Adding a studio audience seems to have really helped. It gives him that immediate feedback as he's working.
What strikes me is the MacDiva comments. Wow, those are offensive. I hadn't been privy to any of the comments that show as 'deleted'.
Diva- attacks on Barger on penis size? Attacks on the ideology should be sufficient, don't you think? Why resort to juvenile attacks such as these?
This was in the pre-editing days. She was rather horrid back then.
(Well actually, she still is. But Justene removes the proof before too long...)
But really, even the ideological attacks are merely reactionary, but more importantly irrelevant. This was a review of a tv show, not a political argument. Notice that I was not particularly praising (nor damning) Miller's political views.
Some people are so utterly blinded by ideology that they can't consider any kind of programming other than from a petty poltical standpoint. Basically, to someone like Diva, absolutely no way is anyone with any personal viewpoints that skew even a little to the right going to get anything but ridicule.
Ideological blinkering is not only an issue for the pinkos, of course. There are a good many right wingers who are just not going to listen to a word that comes out of Al Franken's mouth, and don't need to because they already "know" that he's stupid, has no legitimate points and is not funny.
While I, on the other hand, have to LOVE anyone who screws with Bill O'Reilly's head like my original comic hero. I've noticed now that O'Reilly has developed this phobic thing that he can't say Franken's name. It's like he's Cthulhu - "He who cannot be named." Instead, he routinely refers to him as Stuart Smalley.
As to Diva, actually Justene does not remove all the proof, only some of the most egregious. Read even some of her more recent comments that are LEFT INTACT, such as the totally made up Aryan Nation charges in the "whites only" protest sign thread. That crap is what's left AFTER Justene has pooper scooped the worst of her malicious vitriol.
I will never understand why the expression of an individual personal opinion can lead to such unique and often distressing attacks on one's character, heritage, culture, appeareance, intellect etc. Given the violent nature of reality, it is after all just a show, just opinions.Anybody at all with me on this one?
I just watched this show for the first time, and I can't believe it is still on the air. It is trying (and miserably failing) to pull off a conservative Daily Show vibe. The jokes are horrendous. The comedy is stilted, and the interviews are the biggest joke of all.
How many chances will this guy get?
Welcome to rightwing talk shows.
And the long reaching arm of Rupert Murdoch of Fox News with his media machine.
Where his storm trooper interviewers lead the march with an all growing Republican based media threatening all affiliates owned by Murdoch With the loss of their Career. I use to love Dennis Millers comedic views and the brutal honesty that Sprang forth from it.
Now he's just turned into a joke!
I remember watching One hundred top comedians on TV, Dennis was on the list. Every one on it talked
about his great vocabulary. Thinking back I recall the words of Kathleen Turner
In the cult classic Crimes of Passion to which she says. "He who excels in diction lacks in dick." And now in Dennis Millers case a set of Balls.
SELL OUT !!!!!!!!
I am writing about CNBC in general and all other 24hour news channels. I think they should all be taken off the air. There should be 15 min. periods allotted for news at certain times and that's it. You all should not have asked for a poll as to whether the troops should be sent home or not. You should support the troops whether you support the war or not. It is demoralizing to the troops for you all to get on the air and try to influence the politicians about bringing them home.
As for eavesdropping, this is not a major issue. This has been going on for years, by employers, phone companies and the government. Why is it any different now.
A few things that you all have exaggerated are the Avian Flu, the Korean Missile, and a lot of other news items. There is nothing that you all say that the public can believe. You all should have to go to Iraq and fight in the war, then maybe you would think twice about it. I think we have a right to speak out and I do hope you will take time to respond to this.
My cell phone number is 865-567-5512. Please feel free to call and discuss it with me.

That critique had all the fire and in-depth analysis of a FOX news report on harp seals.
