My store was completely the opposite. You were the customer's bitch! If they asked to speak the manager, even if they were asking for something against policy, 75% of the time the manager would make you look like a douche-bag by doing whatever the customer asked right in front of you.

Working for Barnes and Noble is one of the most thankless jobs I've ever held. I made dirt and I was treated like dirt on a daily basis. Not to mention the weirdoes we got all the time! Like the kind of weirdo who masturbates openly in one of the isles! Or the kind of weirdo who would follow you around the store, ask you if he looked like Brad Pitt, propose to people, then ask for a venti Americano with 3 extra shots, tell you he's not supposed to have caffeine, and return the cup because he thinks it has blood on it!...Need I go on?...

Even so, I was one of their best goddamn employees until the managers really pissed me off by saying they were going to write me up for being late 3 times in one month (one of which was by a negligible amount of less than 5 minutes, for which I would always deduct that time from my lunch); the kicker being was they wouldn't check to see if I had been called in on any of those days, even though they automatically called me every time someone called out because I would almost always go in. They also screwed me over by giving me a 25 cent raise instead of a 50 cent raise because I'd only preformed "adequately." Screw that! I really felt like they devalued everything I did for them (but oh, how I got them back. They asked me to switch my last day so that I'd be working an extra day, so I did. But everything I made that day I gave discounts on or gave away for free. I am a really, really hard worker, but I get really, really upset when people take advantage of me).

I guess most of my beef was with the middle management, but the corporate policy sucks too...It was there to say whatever the managers wanted it to...

Basically, you'd think it would be a cushy job, but it sucks. Employees who work in departments other than the book floor have it the worst. I highly dissuade anyone from working there, well, at least at that particular store...

Ok, really dude? Take it from a Barnes and Noble employee....SHIT HAPPENS!! Things are late sometimes and writing to the CEO of ANY company because of a late online order isn't going to yield results because that kind of shit happens all the time. Write to the CEO if an employee calls your mom a whore, or steals your wallet....not over a late order. This isn't meant to be a personal attack, but I just wanted to let you know that most of the time things are late due to an error on the end of the warehouse and has nothing to do with the "customer service" of the store. It's also really lame when a customer comes to me to complain about a late order that I never had anything to do with in the first place. I am approached constantly and people douche out on me by screaming over something that's not my fault. Come on man, retail sucks. Give em some slack. Kudos for your decision by the way. I get an employee discount and text books are still cheaper on amazon.

I was not raped by Barnes and Noble. But from an online commerce perspective, I was violated.

My wife, who has opposed my online purchases since 1995 and who was just warming up needed some text books for the courses she was taking. Rather than order through AMAZON.com, we noticed that BN was about 10% less. So, we signed up for BN, and order the books (only about $200). I received an saying "contact us within a week or else" or somethign very closely along those lines. A week later, my order was canceled. So I reordered. The second time, I did not even see the ominous yet cryptic Barnes and Noble warning and my order was canceled a second time. No follow up emails, no calls, nothing. BN is strictly 'on the beach.' My wife will graduate somdeday (I have become very religious and pray on a daily basis) and then (if I know her) she will be making in excess of $100K a year and buying art, music and history literature (enough to fill a small bookstore, like the kind I used to work in). It seems unlikely that these books will be bought via BN.

What I learned from doing business with BN is simple and easy to relate. I thought BN would be a carbon copy of Amazon except with cheaper prices. BN canceled my order twice without providing any basis in advance. In short, I was treated as a suspected fraud. Amazon and all other reputable online vendors that I have grown accustomed to using do whatever is necessary to make their customers satisfied, especially their first time customers. That means taking on the risk associated with frauds rather than foisting it onto prospective first time customers. Maybe some kids will accept this treatment (the same kind that bus their own tables at fast food restau-rooms). I learned that I would rather pay the extra 10%.

What I know to be a cetainty is that the next $1000 or $2000 spent by her on books will be over the counter (i.e., out of my paycheck). So BN. Thanks for doing such a thorough job of screening the cheats. You've made my decisions going forward very easy. Just call Amazon to find out how many thousands I've spent (and will) on books.

Enough said. I am really not angry and I really wish all the best to online vendors including BN. But putting a few bytes down to express myself feels great. So a special thanks to blogcritics.org for creating a site that is a magnet for people like me.

I hope you don't have the same experience I just had at Amazon. I ordered textbooks and their site said they were in stock. I ordered two-day shipping and two weeks later, still no stuff. And at least B&N has a customer service number. Try finding a CS # for Amazon on their site: you won't.

So my friend be prepared to be anally raped by the member of Jeffrey Bezos. You might even get some DP action from the whole executive team.

Here's looking at you kid.
