Martin Luther King Day

Many of you may know that when it comes to holidays, etc... I really don't care one way or another. Nothing is sacred in my world. I do know that most everyone enjoys as day off and as we have it, today happens to be the national observance of Martin Luther King Day- Otherwise known as piss off closeted racists day.

In case you did not know, MLK day became a holiday when it was signed in by Roland Regan in the early eighties. There was much opposition then (as there is today) for this holiday to be made an observed holiday. A lot of people complained that Dr. Kings message wasn't a true one. That he wasn't really about the American Way, that he was supported by Communists. That he was a plagiarist.

Seems to me, that he didn't do anything worse than any other politician does. The only difference is that he was a black man who got enough attention to make a change in society and therefore another reason to come up with silly reasons to bitch .

Martin Luther King is the only holiday that is federally recognized for a minority or female in the United States of America. Think about that for a moment. For a country that has been built by more than just white men, there are no other holidays or coinage that honors a significant part of the population. The only thing that I can think of is the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. Which hardly anyone uses. **I may be wrong on this. Please correct me if I am. And no, the Statue of Liberty DOES NOT COUNT**

Now, I bring this up because I have to laugh about a conversation with someone I had that I had once. We were discussion MLK day, and how much she is against it. I was perfectly willing to listen to her reasoning... hell, if it is logical, I give it some consideration. However, when you start to nitpick at really silly things, then I cannot help but to wonder about motive. She brought up the fact that MLK received money and was supported by communists. Yeah, so what? The republican party has received donations from an alleged double agent for China. Hey, if I had a cause and needed the money, I would take it from people who were willing to legally give it to me. It doesn't matter if I don't do what they want in the end... so is the way of politics.

Actually, this country was founded primarily by white men. The US became the US after the Revolutionary War, at which time we were a part of Britian and then a bunch of white colonists decided that they didn't want it that way, and the Revolutionary War began to change that. Do not trip out... this is not a racial comment, it is simply a correction.

I have nothing against people of other races. I am not a racist. I love white people, black people, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, etc. etc. etc. HOWEVER, I do believe in people being fair.

If America can have a recognized holiday that glorifies a black man--which MLK was only a man, not God, then likewise, Mexicans can have there's white's can have there's, etc. And not be called racist.

If America decided to form a national holiday primarly for whtie people that glorified a white man, we would be called "racist".

PS Why wouldn't the statue of liberty count? It's there.
