Did Smith actually kill himself?

CMU reports:

The LA Coroner has failed to rule on the exact nature of the death of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, following his death from two stab wounds last October. As previously reported, at the time of his death police concluded that the wounds were self-inflicted and that the singer had committed suicide. However the coroner ruling on the case last week said there is insufficient evidence to fully back that conclusion.

David Campbell, spokesman for the LA Coroner's office, told reporters that
while it was clear Smith died from two "penetrating stab wounds" to the chest, "the trauma that he sustained could have been inflicted by him or by another and the coroner has not been able to make a determination." LA police said they would now "look again" at the investigation into Smith's death following the coroners ruling. Campbell added that the coroner's officials would revisit their findings if additional information surfaced.

Which suggests the girlfriend did it. I hope they have evidence to support that supposition. Otherwise, I believe it is unfair to her to release this information.

I hope that isn't the case. This was an ugly enough situation that made me very sad. I would rather not have it turn out to be a murder. Here's hoping anyway.
