The Friday Morning Listen: Pre-New Year's Edition

Mescalero - ZZ Top

Ah, that Little 'Ol Band from Texas finally, finally gets back to their roots.

Some would say that they accomplished this on Rhythmeen. Maybe so. But the thing is, I've never heard that record. In fact, this is the first ZZ Top recording I've purchased in years. Let me tell ya, there's some good old fashioned Texas boogie on this thing: and some country-ish swing, Mexicana (is that a genre? I think I just made it up), and humour. All delivered with gobs of mega-distorted guitar and bass. Plus, some phlegm-shakin' vocals.

I'll work up a 'real' review of this over the New Year's break, assuming I don't wreck what's left of my mind with too much football.

Happy New Year everybody.

Mark, you should check out the Chrome, Smoke, & BBQ boxset of their 20 years with Warner Bros. It's great fun, and concentrates two discs just on the 70s material, one on the 80s, and part of one on Recycler plus some oddities. The very early tracks, pre-Top material, is really quite fun. Plus, if you shell out for the special edition, you get a box shaped like a little tin-roofed shack, a separate book, and two very odd things: a flipbook of the boys in action, and a set of cutout paper dolls. I really don't know why the last two are included, but they're kind of fun anyway. I'll leave mine uncut, thank you.
