It's run by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

When Proposition 13 passed, back in the day, and tax revenues dried up, the government of Los Angeles County decided each department would have to become self-sustaining. No exceptions.

This is how the Coroner's Office dealt with that edict.

In my experience, coroners tend to be a bit weird as a group: they're a subset of those medical students already interested in pathology, and would rather not deal with live patients.

Hey, I'm not one to criticize: if I'm doing my job right, my patients are insensible as well. The thing is, they wake up.
