Michael Jackson Interview on 60 Minutes

Michael Jackson sat down on Christmas day 2003 for an interview with Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes. COMPLETE TRANSCRIPT HERE.

If I was skeptical of Jackson going in, this interview really screams out GUILTY OF SOMETHING REALLY BAD in bold letters.

The main thing is that he was saying all kinds of big dramatic things that I find nearly impossible to believe, particularly about his time in custody while he was being booked a couple of weeks ago.

He claimed that the police, among other horrible physical abuses, absolutely dislocated his shoulder. He can't sleep, and he's in constant pain from the awful treatment at the police station. He stopped in the middle of the interview with Bradley a couple of times to complain of the supposed pain. And his unlikely stories went onward and upward from there.

Beyond anything else he said (some of it plausible, some not), there is no way in hell that he was roughed up by the cops like he's making out. They are not that goddam STUPID. There is no way in hell that these cops brought MICHAEL JACKSON in and beat him up, with 100 news trucks with satellite uplinks parked all around HQ.

His whole performance seemed like some drama queen whipping up big, extravagant lies to cover some deep hidden shame.

He also showed Bradley pictures of him with his whole inner forearm apparently horribly bruised. What I'm supposed to believe the cops did that to you, with the media gathered right outside?

It's interesting that he didn't show Bradley the injury, but photos. Bradley should have asked him to roll up his sleeve. Given his behavior throughout the rest of the interview, I would not find it difficult to believe that this was absolutely make-up, cosmetics.

I have no knowledge as to whether the specific legal charges against him are true or false. I just know I don't believe a word that's coming out of his mouth.

And he didn't get any points for ending his interview with a plea to listen to his sappy "Childhood" song. Not buying this schtick AT ALL. "Childhood" is both a crappy song and a cheap ploy for sympathy.

Unreformed hawkish Hoosier hillbilly and sometimes candidate Al Barger runs the still squeezin' down the psychodelic Kentucky moonshine at MoreThings.com, what with the paranoid religious visions and the Pentacostal music and visions of God and anarchy running amok and such. Somebody oughta call the cops to report his out of control freedom of conscience. Till they come to take him away somewhere where he can't hurt anyone else, you can check out his weekly column of NEW ALBUM RELEASES.

If I heard him right, he seemed to think he had cured that kid of cancer. If that were my child I would tell Jackson to keep his messianistic delusions to himself. The man is obviously mentally ill, whether or not he's specifically a pedophile.

Keep in mind that Jackson is a complete surgical reconstruction. I swear I saw his arm break off and hit the stage once when he was dancing (coincidentally, wasn't he the Scarecrow in the movie? Life imitates art. . .). If you touch his face, his nose falls off every time (see this site and also see this site). It's too bad the police didn't know this. And if we are to keep this national treasure (we love you Michael), then they better keep his prison cell below 90 degrees so he doesn't melt.

I mised this - how sad - he is clearly a pathological liar. I don't know what else he is either.

#4 — December 29, 2003 @ 14:24PM — Mac Diva [URL]

I just reread the transcript in case I missed something. The only explicit misstatement I see is Jackson's claim his album (I believe they are discussing the current compilation) is number one. It definitely isn't.

I didn't find the claims of petty abuse such as handcuffing him roughly or leaving him in a filthy bathroom unnecessarily long unbelievable at all. When the police are going easy on arrestees they handcuff them in the front or not at all. I doubt station house toilets are models of sanitation either. And, Sneddon himself mocks Jackson. That gives underlings permission to do the same.

The allegation about locking Jackson in the bathroom reminded me of something from Bill Russell's biography. He was constantly harassed by the cops. On one occassion, cops went to his house and defecated in his bed. That is the kind of petty, banal behavior some of them are quite capable of. Earlier today I read a news story about cops robbing drug dealers -- and getting caught in the process. So much for the police being our national brain trust.

I accuse Michael Jackson of not using common sense after the first allegation of child molestation. I don't know that he is guilty of anything else.

We love you michael.

Thanks for posting the link the transcript, Al. For some reason TiVo only recorded half of 60 minutes for us and it was the half that didn't include the one thing I wanted to see (Jackson).

Would have liked to see his eye contact and facial gestures as he said some of these things.

As for him being bruised up by the police ... does plastic bruise?

#7 — December 29, 2003 @ 16:56PM — Al Barger [URL]

I'm afraid that you'd get minimal input from facial gestures at this point. It struck me that he looked like it was one of those Conan O'Brian interviews with the still image on a tv screen while Smigel's lips gets pasted in.

Actually, even his lips were pretty stiff.

#8 — December 29, 2003 @ 17:01PM — Mac Diva [URL]

I don't know what kind of cuffs were used. Maybe they were metal. However, I've heard moving the hands and arms while handcuffed causes the cuffs to tighten. As someone not used to cuffs, Jackson might not have known any better than to do that.

Based only on the transcript, I don't believe Jackson did himself any favors in regard to his criminal case by giving the interview. He very much needs to repudiate sleeping with other folks' children under any circumstances. (They should never be in the room with him at all.) That is what the public wants to hear from Michael Jackson. It is not going to take him seriously until he says he has changed his mind in that regard. Unless his demeanor made him appear sympathetic, I don't believe he will get much empathy from the viewers. His words aren't good enough. He was surprisingly inarticulate and came across as self-centered.

Geragos has got himself a difficult client -- the sort who will pay good money for legal advice and then ignore it.

#9 — December 30, 2003 @ 19:57PM — TDavid [URL]

It seems like Geragos defense is going to be that Michael really doesn't think it's a problem to sleep in bed with other folk's children and that Jacko is being victimized for $$$.

Will they be able to find jurors of Michael's peers that can get past this very troubling mindset/fascination he seems to have about children.

I think a better defense for Michael might be insanity.

#10 — December 30, 2003 @ 21:30PM — Mac Diva [URL]

I think Geragos has probably suggested Jackson say 'I've changed my mind' about close contact with children, including having them sleep in his room. But, Jackson won't see the light.

Something I think Jackson could do to create a better vibe is sell his ridiculous money sucking estate, (or at least some ot it). He could then announce he is continuing to help children, but in a different way, by contributing to existing reputable charities for kids. A big contribution to the Childrens Defense Fund would also be a great idea.

#11 — December 31, 2003 @ 03:10AM — Al Barger [URL]

Rand help me when you starting sounding all sensible like this, Diva. Stop it, you're scaring me. Quick, say something kookie to re-assure me that things are normal!

#12 — December 31, 2003 @ 08:51AM — Eric Olsen

MD, I agree entirely - that would make a lot of sense and be a good plan. MJ is his own worst enemy, speaking from a tactical standpoint.

#13 — January 3, 2004 @ 02:58AM — Michelle [URL]

the 60 Minutes interview was nothing spectacular. and the reason why he did it was that CBS needed a clarification from him on which he states his innocence, so that they could finally broadcast the Number Ones Special past night, which had been postponed past November.

#14 — January 5, 2004 @ 00:24AM — a longtime fan [URL]

It seems to me that Geragos is just as much of a liar as Michael. Think of his claim in the Laci Peterson case: a satanic group killed her! how rediculous! Anyway, It's all salted with money, show, and media.

#15 — January 5, 2004 @ 02:10AM — Mac Diva [URL]

Uh. . . .I've said things like that in depositions and during negotiations myself. What Geragos is trying to do in regard to the Peterson situation is offer an alternative theory of what happened in regard to murder. Since that is a criminal case, the alternative scenario does not have to be good, just something that could cast the slightest doubt in regard to the prosecution's evidence.

The circumstances with Jackson are quite different. They aren't anywhere near going to trial. What Jackson needs to do is get his social and financial affairs in order. And, according to more recent revelations, Geragos is not being a good advisor in that regard. Perhaps he should stick to advising in regard to the criminal case after all. And someone else, but not Leonard Muhammad, should advise Jackson in regard to other matters.

All the problems he has now has everything to do with his childhood remember that. MJ is always revealing stuff.

He witnessed something you wouldnt even imagined that existed in this evil world. And this shit happens at Disneyland.

#17 — June 9, 2006 @ 10:18AM — Lauren G

I believe that Michael is innocent I mean he never had a childhood of his own, did he? So he's having it now and he's like 45.There's nothing wrong with THAT,so,therefore the police have NO right to arrest him without any REAL proof that's all I wanna say. MICHAEL'S INNOCENT!!

#18 — June 13, 2006 @ 05:10AM — Lauren G

I have no evidence but I know in my heart that Michael Jackson is innocent "Before I hurt a child I would slit my wrists" cried Michael.

#19 — June 13, 2006 @ 10:21AM — Lauren G

I just can't believe that you bunch of saddoes would atually believe all this garbage about Michael Jackson being a pedophile.Everyone knows that it's not true. He's innocent(we'll stick by you Michael)

#20 — June 14, 2006 @ 04:41AM — Lauren G

Why would Michael Jackson hurt a child when he has 2 of his own & he wants more. No evidence ha been found yet,but I think that Michael should be innocent until proven guilty.

#21 — June 15, 2006 @ 05:08AM — Lauren G

Michael Jackson has been accused of the same thing more than once(abusing a child). The press can and DO make up things.
