Death metal guitarist suffers brain tumour

Fuse TV's metal program Uranium is trying to raise awareness about JAMES MURPHY's cause and has posted a special page online at http://fuse.tv/content/specials/index.php?id=148. The former DEATH, OBITUARY, TESTAMENT, DISINCARNATE, CANCER guitar legend was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor in August of 2001. He has since had 70% of the tumor removed, but still needs tons of expensive medications which he cannot afford without assistance. As with most musicians, insurance is unaffordable or unavailable and the government has not offered much help if any. Hoping to raise awareness, Uranium has set up a web site with various interviews from bands who have been helping out James, including Jack Owen from CANNIBAL CORPSE and Terry Butler and Chris Barnes from SIX FEET UNDER. The page also includes a link directly to a donations page on James' web site. Every single penny donated will go directly to James and his cause.

God, he's still suffering with that? I remember hearing about that a couple years ago, and then that he'd gotten treatment. I heard nothing after that and assumed he was given a clean bill of health. This is one of those times when, if you haven't had to deal with massive medical problems either yourself or with a family member, you really realize how crappy the system is. I wish him luck.

Is this the guy who started Death? Because that guy already died from cancer a few years ago.

Chuck Schuldiner started Death, but James Murphy did play guitar on Death's Spiritual Healing album. Murphy also appeared on albums from Cancer, Malevolent Creation, Obituary, Gorguts, Solstice, and a few other albums. He was in Testament too, although not on the album that's linked to this story. He also had a one-off project band called Disincarnate which was really good. He's a great guitarist, and I hope he's able to recover successfully.

Chris, thanks for fact-checking me. Which one was he on of Testament's? I can't seem to remember.

He was on Low and that live album they did in the mid 90s. Then he left the band for bit and came back for The Gathering.
