Cover gets Xmas number one

Well, it's not a good day to be a bookie. Firstly Michelle won Pop Idol (more on that below). Then a complete outsider for the Christmas number one spot stormed in at the top of the festive chart. This time last month the battle for Christmas number one seemed like a clear cut race between The Darkness' 'Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)' and the Pop Idol's 'Merry Xmas (War Is Over)' - the latter the bookies favourite. But in the end it was a mellow cover of a Tears For Fears track that first appeared on the soundtrack to 2001 cult movie 'Donnie Darko' that did it.
Yep, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules version of 'Mad World' is Christmas
number one, beating The Darkness who went in at number two. Last week's
number one Ozzy and Kelly follows at three, Avid Merrion's 'Proper Chrimbo'
went in at four, and former favourite, the Pop Idols, was at number five.
Talking to Radio 1 from LA Jules said: "I cannot properly explain how grateful Michael and I are for all the people who supported this track. I was so thrilled to be in the race with Darkness - it's great that two records made by real musicians were in the running. It's a dream come true."
Elsewhere in Darkness news, MTV has confirmed it will be carrying a Channel
4-style 'alternative Christmas message' at 3pm on Christmas Day, and that
it will be delivered by the rock band's frontman Justin Hawkins. Hawkins will go head to head with the Queen on BBC1 and ITV, and Victoria Beckham who is delivering Channel 4's alternative Christmas message this year.
MTV reveals that in the address Hawkins says: "This time last year I was a music nobody. Today I sit at the top of the music tree, feeling pretty good."
He adds: "A major highlight of 2003 was when we headlined Knebworth with Mr
Robbie Williams as our warm-down act. Despite the fact that we upstaged him
in a pretty dramatic way, Robbie was extremely gracious in accepting a lesson in rock, administered by The Darkness - until the point that his cool friends like Max Beasley turned up, that is, and he dropped us like a hot potato."
As for his hopes for 2004: "Touring with Charlotte Church? We can but dream."
