The Medicare Bill [file under 'Congressional Cons']
Published November 22, 2003
House Republicans keep pushing it [Hey, got to get those campaign contributions, fella].
DeLay, arguably the single most powerful House member, had told colleagues that the prescription drug subsidy was the price for market reform of Medicare. [Robert Novack]
But the Medicare market didn't need reforming. When Medicare tried getting competitive bids, none of the health care providers could provide health care at competitive prices.
Looks like the industry will get the business, though, by hook or by crook. Because for some reason (gosh, I wonder what it is), House Republicans tell us that the solution is to give away billions in taxpayers' money to subsidize Big Pharma and insurers so they can compete.
Wouldn't it be smarter to simply leave Medicare alone and use the same money to add drug benefits? I know that Republican campaign contributors and lobbyists would hate it, but it's the right thing to do.
Write your Senators and House Representative and tell them to do the right thing - vote the bill down.
Oh,yeah, and about AARP. What you hear in the news is that the 35-million member organizationis backing the bill, but that's bull.
William Novelli, the new Executive Director of AARP, is backing the bill and says that the organization is behind it. The only problem with that is that 24 million of the members do not support the bill. [NewPoll Finds Seniors Oppose Senate Drug Plan]
So who is this guy? He's Newt Gingrich's buddy and political fellow-traveller.
" AARP's leadership has been in the pocket not only of the Republican leadership in the House, but they helped write Newt Gingrich's book on how to destroy Medicare," Pelosi said.
