Courtney on drugs charges
Published November 14, 2003
CMU reports:
More shenanigans from the Courtney camp. Ms Love was in court on Wednesday to face the drug charges that followed that bizarre day last month when police found the singer causing a nuisance while under the influence - and when, after being charged and let home, Love took an overdose.
Calling the charges against her "retarded", Love told reporters outside the Beverley Hills court: "I didn't even break a law. I didn't even shoplift."
Love's lawyer argues the overdose was accidental, and that the drugs over which charges have been brought were just three painkiller pills which had not been prescribed properly. He hopes to have the charges dropped.
However Judge Elden Fox, who scheduled a preliminary hearing for 11 Dec, ordered Love to meet with Santa Monica probation officials with the intention of attending a drug diversion programme. Legal experts say that if she were to plead guilty to the charges and committed to attend such a diversion programme she would get away with just paying administrative fees and a two year drugs record.
However Love's plea will most likely be based on which route ensures her long term custody of daughter Frances Bean. She lost custody of Frances following the charges, with Kurt Cobain's mother and later Love's stepfather taking responsibility for her daughter.
