Iraqi doctors deny Lynch was raped

Chagrined physcians who saved the life of former POW Pfc. Jessica Lynch, who was injured in an automobile accident while her unit was under fire March 23, adamantly deny she was the victim of a sexual assault. The allegation is reported in a biography by Rick Bragg, I am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story.

NASSIRIYA, Iraq, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Iraqi doctors who treated U.S. soldier Jessica Lynch dismissed on Monday allegations made in her biography that she was raped during her capture in Iraq, saying she had the best possible care.

Surgeons who treated Private Lynch after her convoy was attacked near the southern city of Nassiriya in the early days of the U.S.-led invasion in March said they were shocked and hurt by accusations that she was sexually assaulted.

. . ."The records also show that she was a victim of anal sexual assault," the authorized biography said. "The records do not tell whether her captors assaulted her almost lifeless, broken body after she was lifted from the wreckage, or if they assaulted her and then broke her bones into splinters until she was almost dead," the book said.

"Jessi's body armor and her bloody uniform were found in a house near the ambush site, the place that some military intelligence sources said she was taken to be tortured. But Jessi remembers none of this. When she awoke in the military hospital, it was during treatment, not torture. When she came to, the cruelties were over," according to the book.

Medical personnel present when Lynch arrived at the hospital say it isn't so.

Dr Jamal Kadhim Shwail was the first doctor to examine Lynch when she was brought to Nassiriya's military hospital by Iraqi special police. Shwail said Lynch was lying in hospital reception, unconscious and in shock from blood loss.

It saddens me enormously that presumably this book is 'Authorised'. By who? Jessica Lynch? Would she authorise a book that contains facts she can not remember? Or does the US Army authorise this kind of dribble? Who made the rape-claim in the first place? I suspect the US Army would be all too pleased if Lynch was indeed raped: God knows they can use some publicity that will raise the idea of a Common Enemy.

It is sad, Marieke. Jessica Lynch's life does not belong to her anymore. Other people have taken it over as if it is a commodity to be exploited.

I'm annoyed with Rick Bragg for reporting rumor as if it is fact. The passages cited above are damning. Not only does he say she was raped, he implies her injuries did not come from the awful automobile accident, which she does remember. As a reporter, I know he must know better than to do that. Bragg grew up hardscrabble, as described in his autobiography listed above. He appears to have gotten out of touch with that and developed a bit of an entitlement complex. (His rationalizations for lying about visiting a town and writing a story there at the NYT were equally ridiculous.) I don't know what happened to Jessica Lynch. But, neither does Rick Bragg.

God bless 'em! Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

indeed. Long live the Daily/Sunday Sport. Oh, what, the NYT isn't America's answer to The Sport?...

The Department of Defense has formally requested that PFC Lynch, U.S. Army (ret.), legally change her name to "Weapons of Mass Destruction". The DoD is prepared upon this name change to release to the press a statement confirming that Weapons of Mass Destruction was indeed found in Iraq; this W.M.D. was abused; this W.M.D. has now been removed from Iraqi control; and W.M.D. justification for invasion of Iraq was an entirely bona fide claim.

vile and cynical, but great one San!

I have had trouble with this new allegation too. I do not blame Miss Lynch in any way for this but once again I believe she is being used for the propagandist.

Four of the people in that Humvee died and she was the only one who lived from that crash, now lets see the Iraqis took her to some house and savagely raped her, then took her to the hospital, where they obviously cared for her as best as they could. Mmmm, why not kill her....why would they go ahead and save her life, just so she could be used maybe later on as a witness to iraqi war crimes. Doesn't make sense to me.

Like everything else, facts are only as good as the ones telling them.
I doubt anyone but Jessica Lynch and the Iraqis who took her prisoner know what was done to her.
Jessica claims she can't remember, though she apparently was awake and alert enough to remember that she never fired a shot after the initial crash of the humvee. She does remember her slain friend Lori Pestawa firing her weapon.
To the person who said all the others in the vehicle died, that is true, but they were killed in a firefight. Not as a result of injuries from a crash.
and as to Jessica's wounds, the Iraqi doctors were not there, they only treated her after she was brought to them, and by then she was in very bad shape.
The injuries were extensive enough that the American doctors who later treated her, felt they likely could not have been the result of the humvee accident.
Also...
If she was NOT sodomized, and the doctors saw no evidence of it, then what is the reason Jessica Lynch had so many internal injuries to her colon that she was no longer able to maintain bowel control.
As of the Time Magazine article, she was still in that condition, and Time, as well as other publications reported it.
The U.S. military doctors in Germany are the ones who disclosed she had been anally raped, (by something, an object.. for an extended amount of time..) (and that the damage was extensive enough to cause loss of bowel control)
There are many conflicting reports in this case, we will likely never know what exactly happened to her.
And depending on your political leanings, you'll make up your mind that she was a victim of rape and abuse by a hostile enemy, or a pawn in the game of George Bush.
But making light of someone who was very likely raped, who certainly endured a horrible ordeal, is pretty frigging sick...
Hey, have some fun with it!
Maybe someone can come up with an even more humorous name for her than the guy who used WMD!
You people are so witty, I'm sure you'll think of something!
And hey, maybe someday your daughter or sister, or mom will experience something similar and some of the same people on here can think of some funny things to say about them too!
Be a real laugh I expect!
