Make or Break for Will Ferrell
Published November 10, 2003
After seeing Elf, I would say that the odds are pretty good that we will see a lot more of Will Ferrell in his own movies. Ferrell, who must be at least 6' 3" or taller plays Buddy the Elf, an human orphan who was adopted as a baby by the elves in Santa's workshop in the North Pole. Ferrell grows up in a society of people who are much shorter than he is and this leads to the typical physical comedy laughs. Think, tall man, short toilet.
After finally realizing he isn't an elf, Ferrell goes to NYC to try and find his real father played by James Caan. Anyway, I can't say much for the plot. It's really not even that important for the story. They just want to make enough room for Ferrell to be funny.
In this case, he was able to deliver almost every time. Whether he was trying to hug everyone, getting drunk, fighting with his store manager, or the department store Santa, Ferrell was a riot. Ferrell plays the incredulous, ignorance of his character so perfectly that you can't help laughing just by looking at his facial expressions. I won't let any more of the plot points get in the way. Just know that Ferrell is funny. That's really all you go to a movie like this for anyway. There will never be an Oscar for best comedy because they take themselves so seriously, so an award is not coming anytime soon.
So, if you need a good family movie to go out and make everyone laugh, I think this one is a good bet. If you do happen to miss it, I wouldn't worry about not getting the opportunity to see Will Ferrell in the future. He will have plenty more movies after his performance in Elf.
