Scariest werewolf take I've ever heard hands down is the first instance in Western literature of lycanthropy, in Petronius' Sayricon, V, the Tale of Niceras. Eerie.

Well done, ChrisPuzak. The Dell Abyss line of books (Toplin published under that, for the rest of the group) churned out some outstanding horror novels. At one point I was gobbling up every one of them I could read.

As for Swan Song, well, that's another sweet spot for me. Robert McCammon was my favorite horror novelist until he literally did a Swan Song from the genre. Not sure why he felt horror was no longer important and retired, because he was clearly one of the best in the field.

Recently he didn't renew the rights on some of those novels, so for those who like horror who haven't read McCammon get to your favorite used book store and check him out.

McCammon came out of retirement not too long ago and got his new Salem witch novels published. I haven't read them yet, but am going to check them out.

Put me in the camp that hopes McCammon will return and write a sequel to The Wolf's Hour someday (the greatest modern werewolf horror novel, not Silver Bullet). Horror is not dead and I sincerely hope he'll come back and write some more books in this genre.

Soem good choices (though I find Koontz a profoundly mediocre writer at best). Best Herbert in my estimation: Haunted (though The Fog is a strong entry). Two more writers I always look for in the bookstore alongside Brite and Tessier: Ramsey Campbell and Charles L. Grant, who both typically write a more sideways type of horror tale.

But A KISS BEFORE DYING is hardly horror. It's a crime thriller.

I immediately picked out the vampire novel, because I'm a real addict (though I don't know this particular author). Thanks for the tips!
