Stones pull out of China

Rescheduling the Chinese gigs cancelled because of the SARS crisis is
proving quite a chore for the Rolling Stones.
After contract issues nearly stopped the band from rescheduling their Hong
Kong gigs (in the end they did perform at the territory's HarbourFest), now
the band have announced their planned Beijing and Shanghai gigs will not go
ahead because arrangements proved "far more complicated and difficult than
expected". A spokesman didn't go into detail about the specific problems
around rescheduling the gigs - he simply said no Chinese dates would be
included on the current Forty Licks tour but that the band hoped to play in
China at some point in the future.
When the Stones were granted permission to play in China it was something of
a coup because their attempts to play there had been overruled by the
Chinese government since the early seventies.
