Halloween Candy Reveals Dark Shadows actor Jonathan Frid's True-Life Fear!
Published October 28, 2003
Actor Jonathan Frid, who played vampire Barnabas Collins on TV's Dark Shadows, has a real-life fear: people who lie.
During an extensive interview published in Halloween Candy, a collection of horror fact & fiction, Frid said:
"To me, horror is when I see somebody lying. I mean a person I know. A friend. And he's telling me something that I accept. And then suddenly, as he or she is telling it, there's something that gives them away. They're not telling me the truth. And I discover it myself, just in the way they're not telling it like it should be told. They're slipping. You see somebody slip. And they know that they're lying to you. That sends chills, shivers, right up and down my spine! It's horror! It's horror! In the cold light of day."
Since Dark Shadows's TV cancellation in 1971, Frid has kept busy producing, appearing, and touring in one-man shows. One such show features a bickering married couple, of whom Frid says:
"To me, that's horror. To see two people who are ostensibly in love, and they are. He keeps saying, 'I love you, but I can't help looking at the girls.' But to me, that's horror. That's the horror of life. To make a marriage work. To make friendships work. Make relationships in life work, and see where they go awry, is horror. I don't need monsters, for God's sake. I don't need vampires and werewolves to enthrall me with the mystery of life. The mystery of life is all around us, all day long."
Jonathan Frid currently resides in his native Canada.
