Sound Unseen 2003
Published September 23, 2003
In my reading about a double-DVD release by Krautrock pioneers, Can, I discovered an independent film music festival here in Minneapolis called SoundUnseen. According to the website, the festival "showcases music's rebels, innovators and unsung heroes with 10 days of documentaries, concert films, music videos and live performances. In our fourth year, we continue to go beyond the classifications of mainstream media and industry marketing niches to uncover the unique experiences and unlikely cultural connections behind great independent music."
Check out the schedule here, with a special viewing of parts of Can's forthcoming double-DVD release: Can - The Documentary, a 1999 film directed by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher, and Can Free Concert, a film by Peter Przygodda capturing Can in a free concert held in Cologne, Germany in 1972. Of Can, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore said: "Can were our clarion call, our initiation to our future."
In addition, one can view Iggy Pop: Live at the Avenue B, a 90-minute film of an Iggy Pop 2000 concert in Brussels. Another interesting selection is Hey, Is Dee Dee Home? by director Lech Kowalski, a film capturing an hour-long interview of Dee Dee Ramone by the director in 1992. Giving props to the local scene, check out Closer than That, which depicts members of Duluth, Minnesota slo-core pioneers Low "going through old photos, enduring awkward press interviews, serenading the baby, navigating traffic jams, and occasionally coming across observations on music, spirituality, and life."
Other features include a documentary on Nina Simone, another on Steve Earle, a collection of local music videos (including Har Mar Superstar, Atmosphere, and Low) in Spectrum: Minnesota Soundtracks, as well as an opening night showing of Tron: Revisited.

I'm very very annoyed that I don't live in Minneapolis anymore. I love Low and saw them in London last year. Fantastic.
