Rock History Written By Losers

The Onion has been sucking air of late, but this week they actually write something funny:

BOSTON — Fifty years after its inception, rock 'n' roll music remains popular due to the ardor of its fans and the hard work of musicians, producers, and concert promoters. But in the vast universe of popular music, there exists an oft-overlooked group of dedicated individuals who devote their ample free time to collecting, debating, and publishing the minutiae of the rock genre. They are the losers who write rock's rich and storied history.

Made even funnier by clicking over to The Onion A.V. Club.

To quote the inimitable Frank Zappa:
Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

But seriously folks, Frank was great in many ways, but also an insufferable snob and a raging hypocrite. He railed against stupidity yet wrote some of the most stupid, offensive, gratuitous lyrics in history. He railed against drugs and the drug culture yet smoked himself to death by the age of 53. He railed against the simplicity of rock music yet made his living from the rock audience. Very weird guy.

Zappa? Weird?

"Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."

This is all gibberish. I don't understand a word of it.

You must be a rock fan, Mike. ;-)

#8 — November 4, 2003 @ 20:55PM — Eric Olsen

deft point, A

#9 — November 4, 2003 @ 20:56PM — andy

I'm not sure what that means haha. Did he die of prostate cancer or of results from smoking?

#10 — November 4, 2003 @ 20:59PM — Eric Olsen

I think it was prostate, but that could have been caused by smoking also. The carcinogens permeate the body.

#11 — November 4, 2003 @ 21:01PM — andy

ok cool. I was afraid at first my friend misinformed me!

what does daft point mean? I believe I missed something or am generally ignorant

#12 — November 4, 2003 @ 22:09PM — Eric Olsen

Andy Andy Andy, I said "deft," not "daft" - "deft" means keenly observed, well done, etc,
