The Darkness on Mercury audience: tepid.
Published September 11, 2003
The Darkness spoke to Radio 1 yesterday about their performance at this
week's Mercury Music Prize - Justin Hawkins concentrating on his £3000 cat
suit: "Well it's quite straight forward really. This one is your basic
orange and gold leather with black lycra - it's functional and has a
detachable trim." At which point he pulled the Velcro strip off to
demonstrate.
On the audience at the awards event Justin continued: "They were tepid...
Tepid to warm I think...more of the tepid to cold then really...weak...on many
levels. It wasn't really a gig going crowd, they were diners - they were
vol-au-vent scoffers. They weren't fists in the air, they were knives and
forks, poised above some melon and parma ham or something, they weren't
ready for us I don't think."
Although they didn't win the award on the night a panel of ten Radio 1
listeners asked to judge on their own 'People's Mercury Music Prize' chose
the rocker's 'Permission to Land' as their favourite album six votes to
four.
