You can have whatever favorite you want to, for whatever your idea of feeling is, (which is all that really matter in the end). There are elements of simple melodic rock solos at which no one can touch Page, the "using the guitar as a paintbrush" award will always belong to Hendrix, Clapton and Beck get get double points for doing what they do so well and so consistantly for so long, -but-, (and I'll limit myself to modern rock-based electric styles, so the memories of Wes Montgomery and Andre Segovia shouldn't be insulted), Alan Holdsworth simply outplays every else by at least two levels. Just ask the other guys themselves: Van Halen, Vai , Satch, etc. readily admit it.

Okay I love led zeppelin they are my favorite band and jimmy page is a great guitarist but alot of his songs are overflowed with distortion (along with eddie van halen [who is a good guitarist also] and i also love hendriz but i agree with people who say the only reason hes considered the "best" is because hes dead. i would have to choose the greatest guitarists of all time are

1. eric clapton - sunshine of your love on "eric clapton: 2001 live on tour" is the greatest thing in the world
2. jimmy page - his use of the violin bow on "dazed and confuzed" and "how many more times" was amazing
3. jimi hendrix- yes i know he is overrated and the only reason hes considered "the best" is because he died but if people are running him down to the ground becuase of him being overrated and being "number 1" because he died should wake up. he is amazing. "fire" and "little miss strange" were amazing songs
4. eric johnson - one word "hills of dover"
5. david gilmoure - "comfortably numb" is tied for the number one greatest guitar solo along with "stairway to heaven"

Dear Led-I'll bite. Many (including the sainted Jimmy Page) ROCK GUITARISTS have been heavily influenced by "obscure" guitarists. St. Page should list Les Paul (Jazz), B.B. King (Blues), and Davey Graham (Folk) as major influences. Commerciality does not equal greatness.

Also-This is a discussion of the "greatest guitarists of all time". The guitar has been around for what-400+ years? It seems like the majority of candidates have been from mid-20th century until present. Isn't it possible that some guitarists from the pre-recorded era were at least the equivalent of SLASH? All you Yngwie
fans ought to remember that Paganini was not only considered a virtuoso violinist, but was also a guitarist (he did compose for the guitar, i belive, if proof of ability is needed).

There are too many great guitarists to settle this argurment. I went to JAZZFest 2005 in New Orleans and heard Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown play followed by BB King. At 81, Gatemouth could barely sing due to throat cancer but his skills were there and much better that than BB King. Sadly he died right after Hurricane Katrina flooded his home in Slidell.

Believe it or not, many peeps don't like the way Ray Charles sang 'America the Beautiful' and some of us don't know what passion is...

I call Albert Einstein the premier genius of the human race because the Theory of Relativity was a giant jump in the understanding of the way our universe operates and to this day, few people actually understand anything other than the bomb part. Jimi Hendrix was the genius of rock and roll because he was the only one who invented something new. It's almost impossible to do anything that's really new in the field of music because there are only eight notes in the Western scale so in a sense, all music is derivative. But Jimi invented guitar feedback and nobody before Jimi even thought about it. And Jimi took his invention one step farther. Until Jimi came along, all music since the time of Mozart and Beethoven has been built on chord structure and rock and roll music uses simple chord structure. Jimi actually used feedback alone to construct song structure in a few, but not all of his songs (i.e. Third Stone From the Sun). To this day, nobody has been able to do what Jimi did.

i dont know who the greatest guitar player is but i think hendrix is pretty still much on top right now, he was so inovative and passionate and no one can make it sound like he did, nirvana is a real big influence on me too, but i dont think kurt should have been that high. those virtuosos are amazing players but they're not raw like hendrix and other great guitarist

well, whether they are idiots or not, their music is wild, fast, and fun to listen to. and to me, thats enough to at the very least put them as contenders in this little list. not for nothing, but if your music is talented, but nobody wants to listen to it, than what good is it. i listened to D R and it was pretty nasty. the guy deserves a serious pat on the back. but that does not mean that we should rule out other greats like johnson or clapton, srv, beck..........

Glad you like Eric Johnson, he is one of my favorites

I never implied anything of the sort. I just said that they were idiots, and they are. Yea they have some skill, but they're still idiots that get most of their sales from impressionable starry eyed teenagers who are immediately wowed by the tricks of the trade. The style is relatively superficial and inspired by glory.

On another note, I think eric johnson is quite good.

nugget, im glad that you are at least addmiting that there is skill in artist like malmsteen. before you kinda came off as a dumbass because you kinda implied that malmsteen (and others like him) had no more skill than the garage band down my street.

i personally dont have a particular favorite guitarist. i personally like guitarist like eric clapton, jeff beck, srv, mark knopfler, and other blues/rock guitaris. but sometimes all that i want to listen to is kirk hammet or dimebag darrel. but if i had to pick, my favorite guitaris is probably eric johnson. "cliffs of dover" is the greatest instruemental song ever.

guppy: I'm not sure what lower life form planet you're from, but my quote about great guitarists implies nothing of what you just said. I didn't say how many years it took to get good. I didn't say that old players were better than young players or vice versa. All I said was that he can't match with some of the younger players. That doesn't mean "young player [beats] old player" or "10 years [beats] 30".

It depends on the player, and it takes less time to play professionally on the electric guitar.

That's the last time I'm gonna spoonfeed you through a rehash of my already well articulated ideas. Next time you need help ask gonzo or Ruvvy for a reading comp tutor session.

Well, well nugget... I give you credit for having the passion and knowledge about all these excellent Classical acoustic players. As for your being here to make fun of me... You are kidding yourself!

"An art that takes more years to master, and an art that, if pursued with patience and great passion for music, yields the GREATEST guitarists."

You contradict yourself in your own argument so many times, it's rather sad. Just this statement alone proves that the young "greats" that you mention couldn't possibly play at the same level as Mr. Segovia or for that matter Christopher Parkening. I can understand the frustration with alot of these so-called "Greatest Guitarists" because the spotlight never seems to hit the guitar players that are truly great but that will always be the case because, like I read somewhere, the real greats hardly leave their house. They play for the passion not for the glory.

and, Julian Bream's recording of the Chaconne royally butt-rapes Segovia's interpretation.

To finish things off, I don't hate players like Malmsteen. In fact, I find myself getting sucked into the cool sound that they create. Because of the volume and electronics, they give off the same vibe as a pipe organ. I can shred myself, so I give them their due credit, but they are not THAT legit. They're cute, excited, self-congratulatory, boyish talents with a big toy and recording equipment.

and for the record, I never put down Segovia. Segovia knew where he stood. That's why he was such a prick. A great player and pioneer of the classical guitar for sure, but he wasn't the greatest ever. People who think that just like to sound smart in a wine bar or something. I have tons of Segovia recordings. he's good, but he doesn't match up with even some of the young great players today like David Russell, Norbert Kraft, Fabio Zanon etc.

Dire STraits: I'm not worried about offending Guitar Center clerks and the rest of the chimpanzees that turn their amps up to " 11" next to the stacks and eqs in the middle of the store.

If those players (satch, vai, and malmsteen) gave a crap about music more than marketing themselves they would have improved beyond electric playing. Period.

There is a girl named Ana Vidovic from Croatia or some God-forsaken country. When she was twelve, she could BLAZE. And by blaze I mean double, triple shred. Now she's 24 and does concert and master classes around the world. What does she play you might ask? the CLASSICAL guitar. A MUCH more difficult art. An art in which 3 to 4 voices are played at a time. An art that takes more years to master, and an art that, if pursued with patience and great passion for music, yields the GREATEST guitarists.

Puerile, look at my tight pants, forced grimace and goofy pretentious adult angst rocknrollers are who you guys are lauding in this thread, and I'm here to make fun of you. There is nothing impressive about great technique when it's used to play banal scales on a low-action light-stringed synthesizer with 6 strings.

ok anyways. I have the Django Reinhardt "Swing de Paris" box set. It has roughly 100 recordings of him playing. Put out by Proper Records in 2003, you won't be disappointed.
