Peter Tosh - The Shitstem
Published August 31, 2003
[I felt my consciousness drifting to another planet as well. A contact high in such an environment could only have been avoided by cessation of respiration. The incense and ganja had long since thickened the room into a Martian swirl. The smoke seemed to develop a life of its own, obscuring all of the physical Tosh save for his sunglasses. Tosh progressively resembled a rasta Cheshire cat.]
Do you prefer some of your songs over others?
"Are some flowers more beautiful than others? The garden is beautiful. Do I prefer brother over brother? Comparisons are part of this political world. Where there is one, there is no conflict. Where there is two or more, there is conflict. Two is the devil. Conflict begin with the devil. We count 0 to 1, then back to 0. It is a circle."
Does it bother you that the majority of your American audience is white?
"Every time, mon! It is 99.9%! It is again a conspiracy to demote I. Don't feel no way. My counteraction will be lightning and earthquake."
What is your goal?
"To promote equal rights and justice for every man."
What will happen when this goal is reached?
"The flowers will bloom and the pollution will go away. There will be fresh air and no pestilence. Man has created these things for experimental purposes to promote death and advance technology. But soon the earth will tilt on its axis and begin to dance to the reggae beat to the accompaniment of earthquake. And who can resist the dance of the earthquake, mon?"
Do you offer any advice?
"Buy more reggae records, mon. Stop smoking cigarettes and start smoking ganja. If you live the reggae beat, you will not perish from it."
Tosh survived the reggae beat, but not the drugs and politics-driven violence of Jamaica. He was murdered in a hail of bullets at his home in Kingston in 1987. The murder is still under investigation.

Thanks Rodney, it was a very strange and indelible experience, as you can imagine. And then he was dead just four years later.
I will now go home and listen to that Peter Tosh album I have floating around somewhere. I had never listened to it. Damn fool I am!
It was an experience that youuuu will never forget, having met the Bush Doctor in babylon queendom. Noo one else in this here life will ever be a comparison to that man, Peter Tosh.Authoritative, tough, tall, black and Afrikan.
No argument from me J - though Jamaican, he saw himself as African - he wasn't kidding about "Mama Africa." And I won't ever forget the experience, that's for sure. Thanks!
Grand interview! One of my biggest regrets was that I never got to see Marley live. I do have a genetic connection, in a way, though: My late father did see Marley perform in the late '70s. I did get to see Tosh, though, in 1983. It was righteous, absolutely righteous. And dangerous, dangerous.
Thanks for posting this.
Sounds like the same tour as this, Nat. It was an amazing show, very powerful, great band, sold out Greek Theater in L.A. I'm very sad he is gone. I never saw Marley live either, to my perpetual discredit.
You are luckier than I. Because these terific man already died when I was born. I am 15, but a HUGE fan of these, big, big, big legends. Im smoking ganja every day, not because its legal here (holland) but because of this people, who acctually are (said by many people) "oldies". No, they aren't oldies. These people have made timeless music. I am youth, youth don't listen to oldies. Only to legends...
William, I admire your taste and sense of history, and legends they are, but too much ganja isn't good for anyone. As a parent of two teenagers, I would encourage you to make sure you don't lose sight of your goals. Please give yourself the tools you need to succeed and complete your education. Best of luck.
Thank you very much, but i am not losing any vision of life, i am just young, everybody who was young, smoked ganja. I know my goals, and I am following the good path to it. I have succes on school all the time, I smoke herb, but herb doesnt influence my school-prestations. Let's say I'll keep an eye on my smoking behavior.
Regards, william (sorry for my bad english)
I can honestly say I never smoked the wacky tobaccy. William your english is better than most of ours!
Okay William, your English is much better than any second language i have, which is really none. I'm glad you are at least somewhat open to my advice, which is just out of concern, not trying to boss you around. I'm very glad you are doing well in school. I sound like Mr. T!
I know you're not trying to boss me, you're just giving me an advice, and telling your opinion about the use of herb. And I am totally open to any advice, but the question is, if i use the advice wisely, And yes, I'll use it wisely. Thanks again,
William
Cool
GOD BLESS THIM , BOB MARLEY, PETER TOSH, ALL THE RASTA'S may jah bless them, peace out.
Indeed, may Jah bless all the righteous people and help the others.
I second that emotion, and am very glad this story has found it's way out to my rasta pals.
Tosh, bob and all the good musicians, giving us good reggae music I thank u all in the name of JAH. Keep the fire burning.
rasjih from South Africa.
One love!
they thank you too, Jimmie
Tosh is not dead becoz rasta dont die,
And if rasta die he dont rot,
And if rasta rot he dont stink,
And if rasta stink.....
he stink of GANJA.
Bless I!
Danny, I'm certain Peter would be comforted by your thoughts.
soo peter was rhe greatest man in the world thats are people whit conviction freedom roots and culture , now peter are in zion whit bob and selassie "every one wants to goes to eanen but no one wants to die ,this followers of jesus " equal rights and justice Jah rastafari
I find it interesting that the exhortations left on this post are all of a positive naure. Yah mon!
Gee, I wonder if it's a side effect of all the ... oh, nevermind, mon.
"What do you guys want?"
I have read with great admiration and contentment the story of the legendary Peter Tosh. I must say frankly that I have gained a lot from this information. As you rightly said, the world knows a lot about Marley but next to nothing about Tosh. Well done for your wonderful work. Since my appetite for information has been wetted, I want more information on the personal life style of this great man: news on his wife, children, acquaintences, etc. JAH GUIDE!!
Farrakhan, Thanks so much for your kind words - I am deeply gratified the interview was of interest and you found it informative! I will work on putting a bio together.
Words are not enough to express my gratitude for the wonderful work you are doing in the name of RASTAFARI. Like all true Rastafarians, I say HARAMBEE: Let us all pull together in one love, peace and harmony: TOGETHER WE STAND RASTA!!!!
Hey guy! Just respect to you for what you are doing! And for you know exactly the idea what u r talking about!
What a wonderful interview.
Thanks for spreading Peter "the toughest" Tosh's message. He was the one, he was the best, he's still the king of reggae music. May his soul rest in peace mon!!
Thanks for your kind words Semayat, and I'm sure Peter would appreciate them too.
Peter was a true revolutionary. He was telling no lie and telling the truth right in your face. He was more than a musician. It's a pitty that there are not many musicians like him. If you notice many musicians are sweet and kind and nice as pie but does their music touch your soul - not mine. I would say that many musicians are not musicians but they are sellers only trying to sell their records without no love in their music. Peter did not. And I appriciate this like i appriciate your work and the wonderful interview.
Thanks Asha, Toshs's level of commitment ws greater than most, I agree.
Yeah. I am living in germany but my roots are from egypt. His music can be heard here in germany and there in egypt. Even almost 17 years after his death his music and his spirit is still around. To quote Peter Tosh:"If reggae is not accepted universally in the four corners of the earth than what`s the use of the music"
Just can't stop reading about Tosh and all rootsmen. What we have here is a complete new book of Psalms. These are the teachings the devils will not teach i n i in the history class.
JUMP HIGHER BRO.
I am very glad I found this interview again - I believe I have a longer version somewhere and the possibility exists I taped it, though I honestly can't remember - more to come! Thanks for the interest, all.
What are you guys talking about..? This conversation seems to have strayed dramatically!
Irie Eric
Did u find the tape of your interview?
It would be great to reach this one...
This conversation seems no dramatically at all. I got one from a Canadian tv in august 83 where he talked about dead. His words were " I man will never die, no one can kill I"
When you see that after his elimination it's pretty dramatical and so sad :-(
No, it's buried deep in the vaults if it exists at all, but thanks for the reminder. I really need to sort through all of that kind of stuff to see what I have anyway.
Peter Tosh was the greatest of the greatest. The toughest of the toughest.
Killed by the babylon shitstem. A poor man of low intelligence named Leppo was the 'Patsy', just like Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby, Sirhan Sirhan.....but the word, sound, and power can never be erased. Roger Stephans has a vast collection on Peter and his music, - check his shows on Tosh, and Marley. "The Babylon 'shitstem'
is the vampire..." Reggae music and its 'message' has spread to all four corners of the globe and one day will surely topple the 'new world order'! The 'Bush Jr.' won't stand a chance against The Bush Doctor! It is 'the slow train', yet there is no doubt that 'this train is bound for glory' for (as Aesop in his fable pointed out) slow and steady wins the race, and I hold no doubt that rock steady will win in dis here rat race. Jah Bless.
Irie
Ok, Eric keep searching this interview. Maybe we won't be disapointed!! We have to spread his word, sound and power!!
You're right Gregg, Peter was (and is) the toughest, the greatest. His music has to be spreaded over this wild world to bring back equality, love and free herb fe every one!!
But like you said Roger Steffens got a huge collection (like Lee Jafee, and all his friends), but due to Babylon-ism thought all the materials will never circulate as it should be. I am trying to get videos, audios, interviews and studios works, but you can't imagine how hard it is!! Check my website for further info.
Semayat
I saw Tosh open for the Stones on tht tour as well and was super impressed - that was probably my first live reggae, and of course most of the crowd didn't know what the hell was going on, but it did open a lot of eyes and helped spread the word.
I can't imagine we will see such a Golden Age of reggae again: the late-'60s until the death of Tosh.
I and I respect Tosh more than what the shitstem do to Bob .I am not taking anything away from Bob but the world has been equally unfair to Tosh .They haven't given Tosh the credit he deserves. It's written that Tosh was the teacher and Bob was the taught.
Eric,
I've read a ton of Peter Tosh interviews, and I've heard some on cd/tape/video. Your interview showed a different side to Peter Tosh. His wit, conviction, intelligence, and faith were beyond reproach and always obvious. I'll be printing yours out and revisiting it frequently.
Jack E. Perkins (Milwaukee, WI)
Thanks Jack, another nudge to go through all my old tapes and see if I still have the actual audio interview. I am deeply pleased this interview has been of interest to so many people.
I BOUGHT THE CAPTURED LIVE DOUBLE CD A FEW YEARS AGO AT A CD TRADER STORE. HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR MANY YEARS. I PLAY THAT CD 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK.IT HAS BEEN A SAVING GRACE FOR ME THRU THIS TIME OF CRISIS. I CRANK IT UP AND IT GIVES ME SUCH A PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HIGH.
ONLY IF.....
I can never get enough of peter. thnks for this one mate. peter will live forever.
i recommend the red x files for any peter fan. the man is a hero. a true revolutionary (more than bob)
What can I say about the man? If you use a knife to cut open my stomach, guess who jump out? The Great Peter Tosh. Whenever I think about Peter tears run from my eyes. Peter is a very intelligent man.
What can I say about the man? If you use a knife to cut open my stomach, guess who jump out? The Great Peter Tosh. Whenever I think about Peter tears run from my eyes. Peter is a very intelligent man. This interview was very nice and Peter is always very witty when answering questions unlike some of those boring musicians. It always take me a long time to finish read Peter's interviews. I need to read it over and over again and enjoy it to the max. Eric, this was master piece.
We will continue to spread your music Peter "Witty" Tosh
My best compliments Eric for this nice interview with the IntelDiplo4HIM !
What about the Peter's desire not to "follow the path of destruction"?
What do you think about how Peter was described in "Catch a fire. The life of Bob Marley" by Timothy White?
Wadadda
IGZIABEHER
Thanks for the kind words guys, I am very happy the interview has been meaningful to you.
It's been a very long time since I read Catch a Fire so I don't remember what White said. I think Bob's most hardcore fans don't fully appreciate Peter and vice versa: what amazing talent in the original Wailers!!
Ooooh man that was a great interview so you are a great man too but some of peter words are just tales, i mean effects of too much ganja in the soul mind body and heart.but he was a grat man a mystic man now i am going to smoke a joint and try live my well as possible and i will take the great words of Peter´ in life i have to make the good better and the better best.one love.god bless us.
Thanks for your kind words M, I didn't take everything he said literally, mor like parables.
I ave heard an interesting story concerning Peter Tosh's demise which I would like to share. Approximately 14 years ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who had just returned from Jamaica. Not being one to be satisfied with the regular tourist traps, he had sought out what he referred to as the "real Jamaica" and heard this interesting story along the way.
According to him, many years before his death, Peter Tosh had some sort of run in with the law. Sorry, I have no specifics concerning what for. The cops and authorities however were apparently coming down hard and looking to put PT away for a while. Because of this, an associate of PT's, who was apparently much less fortunate, offered to take the fall for whatever it was. In exchange, all he asked was that PT take care of his family while he was away and treat them as his own. The story goes that the man went to prison and emerged 15 years later only to find that PT had not lived up to his end of the deal. In fact, when he emerged, he came to find that his wife and children had been treated as strangers by PT and ignored the entire time he sat in prison. After discovering this, the man was extremely upset and set out for revenge. This particular legend has it that it was this man and a band of thugs that broke into PT's home and killed him for the purposes of revenge, not robbery. This is a more plausible story given the nature of the crime and the fact that nothing was stolen.
Anyway, I am not saying this is how it went down, but I am interested to hear if anyone else has ever heard this version of events.
i never heard that story before. it was the government, no? Tosh had his Red X given to him on all the official documents. he was a threat. thugs were paid to take the blow and do an evil deed on the jamaican government's part.
do you see Tosh as militaristic?
do you see his battle through his life and music taking on militant aspects?
anyone read frantz fanon?
he was fighting the colonial system as a "native". the "settlers" played violent games and he was calling out to poor, rich, and all to fight back. no?
anyone?
Eric,
I can't believe you didn't smoke some of his ganj, but then again, in Jamaica, it isnt considered cool to pass the spliff, they smoke em like we smoke ciggarettes - no sharing!
This was his hotel in Hollywood and I was trying to interview him while all this chaos was swirling around me, we had a photographer there, his minions were milling, and there was enough in the air to stain the walls. It was quite an experience, mon.
Re his death, I haven't researched it very thoroughly, although maybe I will now - I found it very depressing and didn't really want to dwell on it at the time. It really seemed like the end of an era to me (and it was).
Hi,
thanks for removing my post from this Blogcritics.org page. however when I type in my name into my search page on MSN, this page about Peter Tosh still comes up.
Please take my name off of the search page entirely.
It is at utmost importance that this happens as soon as possible.
Thanks very much.
GREETINGS: to all in the name of the
MOST HIGH
First & foremost I&I would like to give thanks to H.I.M. for inspiring de I to
share such an informal & riveting interview.Blessed love king!
I&I would also like to take this chance
to say I&I is de all and de all is I&I!
Like Tosh said there is no 2 ,so in the
fullness of that parable ,please overstand we are all one including every musician; Brothers Bob&Tosh were vessels used to share the message & the
meditations of the MOST HIGH and to submit them to comparison would be to
slaughter the representation of H.I.M.
and the fullness thereof.
As for the theory of revenge by those
who murdered Tosh physicalness;"I&I have also heard that story. It was also said that a member of the I-trees was present
on that terrible night so if the story of vengeance & wrath is something you are curious about...this would be a venue to interview or investigate.
Anyway once again thank you for the
upliftment by the powerful words of king Tosh and the views of all.
PEACE, LOVE & UNITY TO ALL...
IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HIGH
"JAHRASTAFARI" ...I-VER LIVING , I-VER FAITHFUL , I-VER SURE FOR
I-VER & I-VER MORE
Interesting interview, Eric, but I must make a couple of corrections. It's been a number of years ago, so maybe that's why you've got a couple of things mixed up. I was at the Greek Theater that night in August of 1983, along with my husband who was playing bass for Peter Tosh, Fully Fullwood (not Gibby Morrison as you have stated above) The Mamma Africa tour began in August of 1982, with the first show at San Diego State University. Then it was the Hollywood Paladium, The Roxy, and onward. The show at the Greek Theater was a year later in August of 1983 and the tour was still going on. I have the tour book with all dates and venues. Perhaps you should take a look at the video, "Live at the Greek Theater" to refresh your memory. The sound was perfect that night and Peter Tosh and Word, Sound, and Power were great.
Frances, thanks so much for checking in and correcting my errors.
It really doesn't have much to do with memory, though, this is what I had written down at the time. Very sorry about getting the bass player wrong, especially since he is your husband! I have made the corrections you suggested. I remember the show itself very well, and it was spectacular.
My deepest apologies for not giving credit where credit was due until now.
Irie!!
Frances Fullwood!!
I am looking for people who were living w/ Peter Tosh. For informations about his 81, 82-83 tour, dates, venues...
If, by any chances, u read this message, PLEASE link me up.
I'am a big Peter Tosh who try to make a big collection of his recordings (audio, videos, interviews...), his life and so on...
Tks again Eric for letting us talkin' 'bout this great interview. Btw, did u find this recording in your collection??
I'am still here to collect it :-)
Best regards
Semayat
Semayat, I have been thinking about you and before the end of the summer I will bust out all 500 or so of my interview, etc., tapes and see if it's there. This will be a major undertaking but it will be worthwhikle to see what I have. I appreciate the interest!
Whut up up my people, Im an intern at universal, I got some of the new 20th century millennium collections cds that just came out from Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, and a bunch of others. My alltime favorite Marley song is Iron Lion Zion, I've even got a poster up with the lyrics. That J hes puffin on looks tempting too. What's your favorite Marley or reggae song??? Hit me back man. Check out this site if you wanna know about the new cds too. One love.
Irie,
Alright Eric!! 500 tapes!! U have to verify all one by one. It'll take time to see if u still got this interview. U know i don't want to bother u, just want to collect as much as possible :-)
And this interview is interesting!!
i got one interview by Roger Steffens (the "my future in Africa" interview from the "I am that I am" accoustic album), and it seems that Peter had lost all trust in the business, he was disgusted by the way of his new album "Mama africa" was promoted, the fact that reggae music was not played on radio for the black community...
And your interview shows his stand against the "shitstem".
ATB
Semayat
I knew Roger at the time - I met him when he was the reggae publicity guy for Island Records in LA in theearly-'80s. He played the uptempo version of "Buffalo Soldier" for me in his office before it came out - very cool.
Hi Eric,
Just coming to see if u found this interview?? the end of summer is soon :-)
On 11th september hurricane Ivan hit Jamaica. St Peter strikes again even almost 20 years after his death, some they say, but it's really a sad year for all the people living in the Caribean (3 hurrican in 2 months!!!). Hurricane Andrew (in 92) is a little one compared to Ivan. Hopin' for the region that all will be finally going well :-)
All the best
Semayat
This man was a philosopher in deed, simply naturally.I do not know where to get his music in Zimbabwe. He speaks(as though he still leaves)and responds to questions in a way that reflects a magnificent God-given genious!
Your site is very informative.Keep up the excellent work!
Terrific interview. It's intersting on the one hand he says, "The shitstem is white and black, Christian and Jew."
But then he goes on to say. "Comparisons are part of this political world. Where there is one, there is no conflict. "
So Tosh is creating conflict with his devisive and dehumanizing remarks.
He goes on to say, "Where there is two or more, there is conflict."
It's clear he's part of the conflict, and was living as a false prophet.
But I'm not trying to bash him, more I'm just expressing what seems like
a skewed sense of Jah love. All I ask is for a little more guidance.
ay mah, jah nee to be coo wit ta gah mah. keep it righ with the gah mah. ya'll be coo and smoke some sheet. pace oot mah. love in meeh.
blackpeoplesuckfattynuts
Thanks all, sitting in the room with him, it was clear he was well aware of the contradictory nature of his statements - he was smiling through much of it. He seemed to relish the role of provocateur.
Irie Mon! Peter Tosh is an always will be my HERO!an my HEART! I am glad to see someone that gives him the respect he desirves. Thank You! To everybody in Reggae Music Thank You too! Reggae is my life. JAH! RASTAFARI! Love you, Kaya Young.
God is for real and rasta will live for real.
ralph kithika
I very much enjoy contemplating the notion that the rasta version of God could win the Big Contest in the Sky
great piece..
Question..did Peter Tosh scare you at all?
EgoTrip's Big Book Of Racism has a funny bit about Tosh taking over one of Mick Jaggers mansions and threating to cut him with a butcher's knife if he tried to come back home. Talk about a rudeboy!
Had to ask!
I think a certain amount of intimidation is part of his personality. I didn't feel threatened in any way and it seemed real important to him to convey his ideas clearly to me -- sometimes he would slow down and enunciate when he wanted to make sure I got something -- but he did make a huge show of rolling a cigar-sized spliff and then filling the room with enough smoke to kill an elephant.
Here's to Peter Tosh: herbalist and verbalist, the toughest. No peace til there is justice. Jah Rastafari.
Irie~ COOL RUNNING MON!
Jamaica mon---
Blue Mountain coffee
and a big fat BLUNT..........
HEAVEN!
and Tosh' comment: comparisons aRE the DEVIL ~~ amen!
The Devil leads us into the great "right or wrong"---"better or worse" "more talent-less talent" BULLSHIT--this IS hell---
ALL IS One---so none can be "better-worse--right-wrong"---
We ALL are the same--black-white-yellow-brown---
Here is a very happy ancient tale from an old Witch friend:
For millions of years---in prehistoric earth--cells kept splitting and dying--splitting and dying---on and on and on and on~~~ over MILLIONS of years~~~
SUDDENLY~~~~~~~~
a cell split AND ...............
the two halves LIVED ....!!!!!
and then the same thing happened over and over and over and over ---
and then the two split again and those two split and it kept going this time and on and on and on and on and....
down to TODAY....!!!!
OK---point of ancient Witch Tale:
here we are today---every single one of us---brown-red-black-pink-white--polka dot---
when that 1st cell split---and the two remaining ones lived and split-etc., etc., --this eventually gave rise to every single one of US.....so we ALL have part of that very 1st cell that split in half and lived in each of us.......
It is literally true that we are all ONE--it is NOT a figure of speech or a metaphor~~~~
and whenever we argue-fight-hurt another----we hurt ourselves also.....just as much......
i know it's hard to remember--and "none of us are saints"---but that's not true either: we ARE all "saints" --we are all PERFECT children of Spirit and can do no wrong---there is "karma" and everything must be "balanced"---so if I DO steal--I will be stolen FROM....not punishment--just a physical/spiritual law of our existence...
So being that we are sometimes "less than perfect" --- i find it might be nice to do as many "good" things as I can think of as kind of a buffer / insurance policy to help soften those inescapeable karmic boomerangs ......
And ----if you all have not heard any music by Johhny Klegg - from South Africa-----go FIND SOME .............
Cool Running Mon .
nice and important thoughts Tristan, thanks
my pleasure mon~~!!!!
now where did I put that blunt ~~~
shit--my mind; I can't remember ANYTHING !!! heh.....heh............
Eric, I thank you in the name of all reggae lovers and freedom loving people across the globe, for posting this magnificent interview with the super man.
I want to ask everybody your opinion. Did Bob Marley become so successful because he was half-white?
Jah bless you all
Long live Bob and Peter
Well, PT knows his dope, and it shows.
I was never a huge fan of Tosh's solo work; I ran towards dub, but I can't deny his work with the Wailer's sets the standard for reggae.
So, who's next, Eric? Yellowman, Mutabaruka, Scientist?
Anyone who can sit still when reggae's playing is dead, him just don't know it yet.
thanks RL, I am so happy this interview has been of interest to so many people. Fascinating question about Bob - he certainly didn't identify with his white father, who was much older than his mother and never much of his life.
Ski, Tosh was up and down solo, typically less melodic than Marley, but I think Mama Africa holds up with most anything Bob did.
Greetings Eric,
that's a very very nice interview with Peter !!!!!!
I name is Ras Craig from Scotland
and I have currently have the largest Tosh archive in the U.K (along with Roger Steffens, the largest collections of Peter's Interviews)
My Bredren,
please would it be possible for I to purchase a copy of your interview from You or even possibly I can trade with you for some of my videos or interviews
(I have many from the 83' Mama Africa tour)
but Eric your comments about Peter's career,
"Tosh was up and down solo, typically less melodic than Marley"
where did you get that idea from ??
I think that's your opinion,
I would like to know which of Peter's albums are down
Please E-mail I,
Thank You and
Jah Guidance
Ras Craig
I had the great good fortune of seeing Peter Tosh in Toronto in the very early eighties. On this tour he had "Taxi Squad", Robbies Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar, as his rythem secttion. Absolutly the tightest reggae show I've ever seen!
The man was magnificant and intimidating on stage, in person I can only imagine the aura given off by his presence. Sorry if that sounds sort of new agy but you get the idea.
He is sorely missed in these days of conformity and white apropriation of black culture. I can't see him or any of the reggae heavies standing for the way rap has been twisted into a fasion statement for white homies from suburbia.
gypsyman
thanks Ras Craig, yes, certainly that was just my opinion about his albums being variable, but when he was on he was great, and the live show was dominating.
Once again, I have to try to find the interview tape. It is certainly of historical as well as personal interest.
g-man, he was a force indeed!
greetings one and all.just like tosh as said all is life.THERE WILL BE NO PEACE UNTIL THERE IS EQUAL RIGHTS AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.Tosh was and is the greatest and toughest.u can kill the revoutionary but u cant kill the revolution. Then again u cant kill a man like peter, like he said ONLY FOOLS DIE!so check it,i am that i am.BLESS!
soy de La Plata , Argentina, aguante el reggae , Peter , Bob y Resistencia suburbana ...La Marihuna y El Che Guevara!!! un saludo ....gente!!
Tosh lives yesterday, today and tomorrow. For he was the Original Mon.
Give Peter a song to sing like Chuck Berry's Jonny Be Goode and Rolling Stone's Don't look back and see how he plays them and you'll know he was a true artist but what made him genuine was; good as these songs are, he liked making and singing his own songs.
to feel it is to really understand it. Mr Peter Tosh has been taken from us to early in this lifetime. I have been priveledged to see this master of reggae and what Rasta has to stand for only four times live and to see his son Andrew at least 1 dozen times. His symbol of rasta music lives on daily in my world and will teach my children everything he stands for. He set trends as a musician, artist, as well as an architect as a reggae musician, and may his guitar bellos sing on!!! Jah Rastafarai.

PETER TOSH WAS INDEED A LEGEND.HIS WORDS WILL CONTINUE TO INSPIRE US HERE ON EARTH AND WHERE EVER WE GO.BOB MARLEY WAS A LEGEND EQUALLY INSPIRING,BUT THE MANNER IN WHICH BOB TREATED HIS WIFE RITA,HIS BAND MEMBERS INCLUDING PETER WAS UN ACCEPTABLE.THE STORY RELATING TO PETER'S MURDER NEEDS TO BE TOLD OPENLY.LET THOSE WHO KNOW THE TRUTH COME FOWARD.WHAT IS EVIDENT FROM THE REGGAE GENRE IS THAT PETER STOOD OUT AMONGST THE REST AS THE LION.HE DID NOT COMPROMISE.HIS MESSAGE WAS OUTSTANDING.A TRUE REVOLUTIONARY.HE WAS GOD SENT,JUST LIKE MALCOM X.HIS SOUL IS OLD,MIGHTY AND IMPERISHABLE.HIS WORDS ARE THE TRUTH.
LET ALL THE CHILDREN OF THIS MIGHTY LION STAND UP JUST LIKE HIM.ANDREW KEEP THE FIRE BURNING.PLEASE WHOEVER KNOWS PLEASE INFORM ME ABOUT MARLENE,OBEAH,PETER;THE MURDER AND JAMAICA?PETER WENT TO SWAZILAND TO INQUIRE ABOUT HIS FADING VOICE;THE HERBS MAN TOLD HIM THAT HE NEEDS TO MAKE A SACRIFICE WHEN HE RETURNS TO JAMAICA B'CAUSE HE WILL BE SHOT,BIENG A RASTA FIT HE DID NOT COMPLY AND WE LOST HIM.PETER DID NOT REALISE THAT HE HAD ANCESTRAL POWERS.IT WAS A PITY.
TO ALL THE RASTAFARIANS IN JAMAICA, YOU RELIGION IS PERFECT BUT INCOMPLETE, INCORPORATE IN IT THE WHOLE ISSUE OF ANCESTORS B,CAUSE YOU ARE AFRICANS.RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE AND MAKE PROGRESS.BIENG A VEGITARIAN IS GOOD AND YES HAILE SELLASIE IS THE LION OF JUDAH,YET AGAIN ANCESTORS ARE REAL, THEY LOOK UPON YOU EVERY TIME, THEY NEED YOUR ACKNOWLADGEMENT,OFFER SACRIFICES TO THEM, THEY WILL BRING UPON YOU PROSPERITY AND SUCCESS.JAMAICAN PEOPLE, YOU ARE GIFTED WITH WISEDOM AND INCREADABLE KNOWLADGE.PETER TOSH KNEW THIS BUT I SUSPECT THAT HE DID NOT WANT TO CONFUSE THE RASTAFARIAN FAMILY,PETER TOSH HAD THE ANCESTROL POWERS,HE COULD FORETELL EVENTS PRIOR TO THEIR HAPPENINGS,HE FORETOLD HIS OWN DEATH.THE RASTAFARIAN MOVEMENT IS A VEHICLE THAT SORT TO UPLIFT THE SLAVISH INDOCTRINATION, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE BLACK RACE,REMEMBER THIS,JESUS WAS BLACK,WHEN HE WAS YOUNG;TWO DOVES WERE SACRIFICED,THE INCENSE WAS BURNED AS THIS WAS ACCORDING THE TRADITION OF THE THEN JEWS,THE VERY SAME TRADITION THAT WE THE ZULUS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND EVERY OTHER AFRICAN PEOPLE IN THIS CONTINENT STILL UPHOLD TO THIS PRESENT DAY.TWO DOVES WERE SACRIFICED B,CAUSE JOSEPH WAS POOR OTHERWISE A GOAT OR A SHEEP WOULD HAVE BEEN SACRIFICED EXACLY AS WE STILL DO TODAY.IF RASTAFARIANISM IS A TOOL TO ACKNOWLADGE THE ORIGINS AND THE TRUE RELIGION OF THE HUMAN RACE,SURELY THE ISSUE OF ANCESTORS CAN NOT BE IGNORED.I AM COMMUNICATING THIS INFORMATION TO YOU TODAY B,CAUSE WHEN I VIEWED THE STEPPIN RAZOR,RED X,PETER`S AUTOBIOGRAPHY I WAS SADDENED BY THE FACT THAT WE LOST THIS MIGHTY LION SIMPLY B,CAUSE HE COUID NOT PERFOM A RITUAL WHICH IS HIS INHERITANCE AS AN AFRICAN.THIS IS A CONTRADICTION THAT IS SO UNNECCESSARY.THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIANITY ARE IN AFRICA,THE ORIGINS OF RASTAFARIANISM ARE IN AFRICA,THOUGH FOUNDED BY MARCUS GARVEY IN JAMAICA,HE WAS HAILING HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY IN ETHOPIA.FULFILL RASTAFARIANISM,TIME IS NOW.
And Yes that is my real name "Woldesemayat" that was given to me in ethiopian orthodox chruch which connected me to the other "Woldesemayat" the great Peter Tosh when he got baptized in the ehthiopian orthodx church. This was a true rasta who took his upon this life to eradicate the shistem that black poor people have been living all thier life time. I always tell people if you want to know how great and true this man was just listen to the one love peace concert cd and you will see. Yes people always talk about how bob got the two leaders to shake hands on stage but really what did that to improve the lives of the jamican people. Peter was a prophet and a prophet always speaks the truth. For a man in a third world country where what you say and do is controlled to the max he was the real hero. He paid a huge price for that too. He was not trying to be ethiopian he was an ethiopian, he spoke the language knew the culture. The song Igziabher says it all about this man and his profound love and respect for the almighty. I am glad I came across this blog and reading all the comments about Woldesemayt really affirmed my belief that this man is trully a prophet who was sacrificed by the shitsem so people wont know nothing about the truth.
Give thanks and bless.
Sorry I forgot to thank the author Eric for this great peace. Once I started talking about Tosh I forget everything. Give thanks for posting this great interview.

i enjoyed the peter tosh interview; i did not realize he was such a spiritual(if that's the right word) person. i recall during the early 80's, the first time i heard bob marley's music, i wasn't so thrilled. but the first time i heard peter tosh, i was enthralled. it sounded like pure reggae. people just did not agree with me when i said,'bob marley is good, but peter tosh is better.' years later, on a vh-1 behind the music show about peter tosh, i recall that the producer of the wailers decided to put bob marley up front because he was half-white and would be more appealing to the mainstream audience, which did not sit too well with peter tosh. perhaps this explains the reference he made in the interview to bob marley's half-whiteness. my favorite peter tosh albums are legalize it and wanted: dread and alive. they are testaments to his gifts as musician, songwriter, philosopher, and historian. thanks for posting a great interview. i learned more from it than i ever could sitting in a professor's philosophy class.

Bob Marley- Hold On To This Feeling
That was a great interview. You truly capured the moment through your discriptions. I also think you asked the right questions, to give us a glimpse of what PT was truly all about.
I am a huge reggae fan. I've been collecting classic and contemporary 45's for years now. I have respect for PT as a musician, although not one of my top 10. I have little respect though for many of his attitudes. I am quite surprised, after reading the interview and then reading through the comments that so few people had anything but positives to say about him and in particular his words, in the interview.
One person had mentioned the story surrounding his death, which, I've heard several times on my visits to Jamaica. Everyone I've spoken to over the years have all said that it was retaliation for his former friend serving serving many years in prison for PT in exchange for his family being well cared for. PT did not live up to his end at all.
In the interview, he came across as being very self righteous, arrogant, greedy, jealous and semi-delusional . I won't take up the space in this blog to quote him, but I believe if you scan over the interview again, you will clearly see all of the attitudes I have just mentioned.
He was obviously very jealous of Bob (personally, Bunny is my favorite Wailer, so that is not affecting my judgement), overly concerned with $ and sales (for a true rasta), but at the same time angry that so much of his audience was white (a bit racist for someone who preaches equality amongst people), and had to blame anyone but himself for poor record sales.
I think it's great that people love his music...but let's not let that over shadow everything by calling him a prophet, as I saw in many of the comments. He was a great musician with an even greater ego.
Fantastic interview. I think the bottom line is never before -- and woe to humankind -- perhaps never again, will there be a confluence of talent the likes of Peter, Bunny, and Bob coming together again. Who cares if Bob's better? Or if Peter's better? They both are so talented, it's like comparing two blazing suns/stars in the heavens. Who's to say one is hotter, brighter than the other? They were too bright, too powerful to stay together for long. Each needed more space, more room as to pan out and reach different, broader audiences. As for the horrible tragedy of PT's murder, it's very difficult to imagine it NOT being politically motivated. I think Leppo? was definitely a patsy, PT had conflict througout his life with the Jamaican police/authorities. He himself told how they had "beat him within an inch of his life" one time back in the 70's. Finally, Bob himself basically predicted Peter's demise, did he not? "How long shall they kill our profits, while we stand aside and look...?"
peter tosh is the great reggae legends ever. the reason why i dont like bob marley is because he never ever gave peter tosh his props peter tosh wrote alot of bob marley stuff never a thank you or anything thats the reason why i dont respect bob i know he's a legend but peter tosh is the reggae's king thats all i got to say peace
I just wanna say a truth to a couple of dumbs(the writers of some comments above),one of which calls him/herself sarah that she/he probably understands but never overstands. Peter Tosh was,and is the King of reggae.white people have always done their best to raise their racemates and put them where a BlackMan deserves to be,and thats one of the two reasons why mr Bob seems to you to be what you think he is.the other reason and the main one is the fact of,unlikely most people who claim to be musicians, saying only what is truth in an inside-out world where bullshit is advertised and thruth distorched. Tosh was a Man inspired By GOD to speak the truth. his reggae is at the highest position among reggaes.I cannot awaken you if you refuse...
Sarah- please do not portray yourself as one qualified or knowledgable in Reggae music and thus qualified to judge Peter Tosh. Because your venomous spewing upon a legend is inconcievable. How can you criticize Peter Tosh and his struggle against the imperial/colonial "shitstem?" He was the most eloquent speaker of Jamaican liberation against European imperialism, how is that NOT an exalted cause? Please crawl back into the hole of idiocy that you emerged from.
Yes, I agree, Sarah has no right to portray the Stepping Razor in a negative light. You sound critical of a man who was speaking out against the colonial shitstem and helping the oppressed people. What gives you this authority to do this? Nobody takes your statements seriously and you sound more like a bitter celibate woman than a knowledgable Rasta. "PT did not live up to his end of the bargain?" Why don't you prove this wooman instead of making critical statements and throwing dirt on the good man's grave?
Peter was a man who was trying to uplift the mind of oppresed people. But the SHITSTEM didnot leave him alone cause he was pointing the problem from it's roots. That's why the media and SHITSTEM leaders branded him a RADICAL. A Radical in the face of truth is not sin. A radical in the face of humiliation, degradation and all kinda of ion is sin and disgrace.
Something must be done to make sure the whole (true0 history of Tosh is known. Many people talk bout marley. We know he was there and as Tosh put; he did his job and gone. But the way people and media talks about him, one may think that the KING OF REAGAE i.e Tosh he's not excting. Always people talks about Tosh as a jailbird,Ganja smoker and all kinda of bad sounding act.The web should be created for people to know WHAT TYPE OF MAN WAS HE.The UNTOLD story must be open to all for this man who died because of others.Talks aboutmarley: this because many people can listen to his songs. We should do our best to make sure people can listen to Tosh as well and compare between two.The results others will not agree, but that's their proplem.Listen to Downpressorman,Glasshouse,NO NUKE WAR to know WHAT TYPE OF MAN TOSH WAS and to what he was stand for.
i want exchange peter tosh live concerts tell me some here i will put in contact i have 50 shows of peter tosh
el concierto de berlin de 1983 es la ostia de bueno haber si lo sacan en official yo lo tengo y mola todo desde el comienzo hasta el final .......lo que se esta perdiendo la gente
MANNAY and the other Sarah-attackers: What "venemous spewing"?? You know the old saying- "You spot it, you got it". Sarah said nothing that required your backlash. She stated the truth as she saw it. Your childish attacks on this person is the result of her having the temerity to disagree with you on your myopic view of Tosh. By all accounts I've heard and read(and I've read/heard A LOT), Tosh was indeed quite the egotist. He also indulged in quite a bit of duplicity, on one hand preaching "unity" and on the other hand making blatantly racist statements. Face it, the man spoke often out of both sides of his face. That's a proveable fact, not an opinion.
It is also a matter of record that many people in his life felt that he was overly-critical of everybody and a bit paranoid-delusional towards the end of it. Sorry Rastas, but like as not, marajuana is a HALLUCINOGEN. Period. And it tends to make some members of the populace pretty paranoid. Tosh was obviously part of this demographic.
I'm a fan of PTs music, but stop trying to make him into a saint. Or do I need to bring up the thuggish, cowardly trashing Keith Richards' home that PT and his friends indulged in?
...oh, and I guess cuz I have the gall to challenge your long-cherished views, I'm a "hate-monger" and an "idiot", right?
peter tosh had no duplicity. he new himself, im almost positive. he was jsut concious of the facts that are on this eart, and racism is one, so he seeked to help his people grow, you see?
he was maybe paranoid of the truth, and critical of people but not judgemental. he didnt have the seperation of sex's like bob, and had good friends of all colors. keith richards messed with him, so why wouldnt he get mad?
He did more than "get mad". He vandalised the man's home. A cowardly act. How did Keith "mess" with him? Did he destroy Peter's home?
...or threaten his life? Tosh threatened to murder Richards if he came to his own house, where Tosh and his buddies were lounging.
There sure are a lot of Tosh apologists on this board. He was an excellent musician and artist, but let's not whitewash him too much here.
he's too black to be whitewashed.
chill on the EGO you 2. didnt keith richards owe him money??
Peter Tosh thought everybody owed him something. Always complaining about being "ripped-off". Maybe some of it had merit, but I doubt all of it.
É um pena perdermos o Tosh tão cedo ... ele tinha uma visão superior, esta que nos permite afastar desse mundo falso e materialista. Ele continua brilhando num lugar melhor. Obrigado pela aula Mr Tosh.
Tosh rules !
peter tosh the man is the greve in peace of love with future carrier
I appreciate that even from time immemorial Saints were never loved by all.Its not surprising that you get people criticizing Tosh and giving their conclusive deductions and hypothesises of him being an egotist and all the obscenities etc.We shall all fight and quarrel if we want to be judgemental coz that is not our position.Lets applaud whats good and detaste the bad without being judgemental and spiteful, the man deserves props "give unto Ceasar wht belongs to Ceasar and to Tosh what belongs to Tosh"
I wish I could find a full biography in form of a book..there are many bob marley books...so why there are no peter tosh books???? I would be happy to find a real good book of course this will need a good author..
Peter Tosh's song titled "Fools die (for want of wisdom) is the best song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peter Tosh music helps me to live my life
PETER TOSH WAS A DEMI GOD,REGGAE KING,MY MAN AND THE ONE WHO TOUGHT MARLEY GUITER.I NEED TOSH'S ALBUMS,MON.PLEASE. [Personal contact info deleted]
need more peter,s tosh bottlegs ---what,s happen to discographs dont do nothing ??
Yes I and I liveth and I give thanks to Eric for posting this fantastic interview.
First, Why do we never hear the name of this so called "associate," of Tosh that took a rap for him in exchange for support of his family. This is also briefly mentioned in the Stepping Razor, but also quickly dismissed as lies. It also seems highly unreasonable. The only name surrounding the murder I have ever seen is Leppo..let this unamed avenger step forward. I am very interested in the other two Unamed gunmen that gunned down Peter execution style.
But Babylon the joke is on you as Peter no Dead.
Second, Africa is the central part remaining of Pangea, the earths orginal land mass...sooo "No matter where you come from, you are an African"
Give thanks and praises to Both Bob And Peter they have both decorated the entire earth with beautifull spiritual music for the heart!!
Jah Rastafari Ever Liveth
I have been thinking more about this. SO the story goes like this...."According to him, many years before his death, Peter Tosh had some sort of run in with the law. The story goes that the man went to prison and emerged 15 years later only to find that..."
We are to believe that someone would go to jail for 15 years thus leaving his wife and children for a crime he did not commit in hope that his wife would be taken care by another man. And his children, who would be more than likely adults when he emerges, would be abandoned for their entire childhood. Wow, quite the guy, and what is this mans name, it should be easy to find if he did 15 years in jail.
Peter was a revolutionary and was cowardly executed...what else can you say about being shot face down in the back of the head?
Roulez pour moi une spliff de la taille d'une banane que je puisse croiser sprituelement peter tosh encore une fois

What an excellent interview, Eric -- and what a terrific experience that must have been. The only rock star I ever shared a joint with is Jim Dandy Mangrum, so I guess I'm jealous. Thanks.
