Grand interview! One of my biggest regrets was that I never got to see Marley live. I do have a genetic connection, in a way, though: My late father did see Marley perform in the late '70s. I did get to see Tosh, though, in 1983. It was righteous, absolutely righteous. And dangerous, dangerous.

Sounds like the same tour as this, Nat. It was an amazing show, very powerful, great band, sold out Greek Theater in L.A. I'm very sad he is gone. I never saw Marley live either, to my perpetual discredit.

Im smoking ganja every day, not because its legal here (holland) but because of this people, who acctually are (said by many people) "oldies". No, they aren't oldies. These people have made timeless music. I am youth, youth don't listen to oldies. Only to legends...

William, I admire your taste and sense of history, and legends they are, but too much ganja isn't good for anyone. As a parent of two teenagers, I would encourage you to make sure you don't lose sight of your goals. Please give yourself the tools you need to succeed and complete your education. Best of luck.

Peter was a true revolutionary. He was telling no lie and telling the truth right in your face. He was more than a musician. It's a pitty that there are not many musicians like him. If you notice many musicians are sweet and kind and nice as pie but does their music touch your soul - not mine. I would say that many musicians are not musicians but they are sellers only trying to sell their records without no love in their music. Peter did not. And I appriciate this like i appriciate your work and the wonderful interview.

Yeah. I am living in germany but my roots are from egypt. His music can be heard here in germany and there in egypt. Even almost 17 years after his death his music and his spirit is still around. I saw Tosh open for the Stones on tht tour as well and was super impressed - that was probably my first live reggae, and of course most of the crowd didn't know what the hell was going on, but it did open a lot of eyes and helped spread the word.

I can't imagine we will see such a Golden Age of reggae again: the late-'60s until the death of Tosh.

I and I respect Tosh more than what the shitstem do to Bob .I am not taking anything away from Bob but the world has been equally unfair to Tosh .They haven't given Tosh the credit he deserves. It's written that Tosh was the teacher and Bob was the taught.

I've read a ton of Peter Tosh interviews, and I've heard some on cd/tape/video. Your interview showed a different side to Peter Tosh. His wit, conviction, intelligence, and faith were beyond reproach and always obvious. I'll be printing yours out and revisiting it frequently.

I ave heard an interesting story concerning Peter Tosh's demise which I would like to share. Approximately 14 years ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who had just returned from Jamaica. Not being one to be satisfied with the regular tourist traps, he had sought out what he referred to as the "real Jamaica" and heard this interesting story along the way.
According to him, many years before his death, Peter Tosh had some sort of run in with the law. Sorry, I have no specifics concerning what for. The cops and authorities however were apparently coming down hard and looking to put PT away for a while. Because of this, an associate of PT's, who was apparently much less fortunate, offered to take the fall for whatever it was. In exchange, all he asked was that PT take care of his family while he was away and treat them as his own. The story goes that the man went to prison and emerged 15 years later only to find that PT had not lived up to his end of the deal. In fact, when he emerged, he came to find that his wife and children had been treated as strangers by PT and ignored the entire time he sat in prison. After discovering this, the man was extremely upset and set out for revenge. This particular legend has it that it was this man and a band of thugs that broke into PT's home and killed him for the purposes of revenge, not robbery. This is a more plausible story given the nature of the crime and the fact that nothing was stolen.
Anyway, I am not saying this is how it went down, but I am interested to hear if anyone else has ever heard this version of events.

i never heard that story before. it was the government, no? Tosh had his Red X given to him on all the official documents. he was a threat. thugs were paid to take the blow and do an evil deed on the jamaican government's part.

I can't believe you didn't smoke some of his ganj, but then again, in Jamaica, it isnt considered cool to pass the spliff, they smoke em like we smoke ciggarettes - no sharing!

This was his hotel in Hollywood and I was trying to interview him while all this chaos was swirling around me, we had a photographer there, his minions were milling, and there was enough in the air to stain the walls. It was quite an experience, mon.

Re his death, I haven't researched it very thoroughly, although maybe I will now - I found it very depressing and didn't really want to dwell on it at the time. It really seemed like the end of an era to me (and it was).

Interesting interview, Eric, but I must make a couple of corrections. It's been a number of years ago, so maybe that's why you've got a couple of things mixed up. I was at the Greek Theater that night in August of 1983, along with my husband who was playing bass for Peter Tosh, Fully Fullwood (not Gibby Morrison as you have stated above) The Mamma Africa tour began in August of 1982, with the first show at San Diego State University. Then it was the Hollywood Paladium, The Roxy, and onward. The show at the Greek Theater was a year later in August of 1983 and the tour was still going on. I have the tour book with all dates and venues. Perhaps you should take a look at the video, "Live at the Greek Theater" to refresh your memory. The sound was perfect that night and Peter Tosh and Word, Sound, and Power were great.

It really doesn't have much to do with memory, though, this is what I had written down at the time. Very sorry about getting the bass player wrong, especially since he is your husband! I have made the corrections you suggested. I remember the show itself very well, and it was spectacular.

i got one interview by Roger Steffens (the "my future in Africa" interview from the "I am that I am" accoustic album), and it seems that Peter had lost all trust in the business, he was disgusted by the way of his new album "Mama africa" was promoted, the fact that reggae music was not played on radio for the black community...
And your interview shows his stand against the "shitstem".

But then he goes on to say. "Comparisons are part of this political world. Where there is one, there is no conflict. "

So Tosh is creating conflict with his devisive and dehumanizing remarks.

He goes on to say, "Where there is two or more, there is conflict."

It's clear he's part of the conflict, and was living as a false prophet.
But I'm not trying to bash him, more I'm just expressing what seems like
a skewed sense of Jah love. All I ask is for a little more guidance.

I think a certain amount of intimidation is part of his personality. I didn't feel threatened in any way and it seemed real important to him to convey his ideas clearly to me -- sometimes he would slow down and enunciate when he wanted to make sure I got something -- but he did make a huge show of rolling a cigar-sized spliff and then filling the room with enough smoke to kill an elephant.

Here's to Peter Tosh: herbalist and verbalist, the toughest. No peace til there is justice. Jah Rastafari.

I had the great good fortune of seeing Peter Tosh in Toronto in the very early eighties. On this tour he had "Taxi Squad", Robbies Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar, as his rythem secttion. Absolutly the tightest reggae show I've ever seen!

The man was magnificant and intimidating on stage, in person I can only imagine the aura given off by his presence. Sorry if that sounds sort of new agy but you get the idea.

He is sorely missed in these days of conformity and white apropriation of black culture. I can't see him or any of the reggae heavies standing for the way rap has been twisted into a fasion statement for white homies from suburbia.

Give Peter a song to sing like Chuck Berry's Jonny Be Goode and Rolling Stone's Don't look back and see how he plays them and you'll know he was a true artist but what made him genuine was; good as these songs are, he liked making and singing his own songs.

to feel it is to really understand it. Mr Peter Tosh has been taken from us to early in this lifetime. I have been priveledged to see this master of reggae and what Rasta has to stand for only four times live and to see his son Andrew at least 1 dozen times. His symbol of rasta music lives on daily in my world and will teach my children everything he stands for. i enjoyed the peter tosh interview; i did not realize he was such a spiritual(if that's the right word) person. i recall during the early 80's, the first time i heard bob marley's music, i wasn't so thrilled. but the first time i heard peter tosh, i was enthralled. it sounded like pure reggae. people just did not agree with me when i said,'bob marley is good, but peter tosh is better.' years later, on a vh-1 behind the music show about peter tosh, i recall that the producer of the wailers decided to put bob marley up front because he was half-white and would be more appealing to the mainstream audience, which did not sit too well with peter tosh. perhaps this explains the reference he made in the interview to bob marley's half-whiteness. my favorite peter tosh albums are legalize it and wanted: dread and alive. they are testaments to his gifts as musician, songwriter, philosopher, and historian. thanks for posting a great interview. i learned more from it than i ever could sitting in a professor's philosophy class.

That was a great interview. You truly capured the moment through your discriptions. I also think you asked the right questions, to give us a glimpse of what PT was truly all about.

I am a huge reggae fan. I've been collecting classic and contemporary 45's for years now. I have respect for PT as a musician, although not one of my top 10. I have little respect though for many of his attitudes. I am quite surprised, after reading the interview and then reading through the comments that so few people had anything but positives to say about him and in particular his words, in the interview.

One person had mentioned the story surrounding his death, which, I've heard several times on my visits to Jamaica. Everyone I've spoken to over the years have all said that it was retaliation for his former friend serving serving many years in prison for PT in exchange for his family being well cared for. PT did not live up to his end at all.

In the interview, he came across as being very self righteous, arrogant, greedy, jealous and semi-delusional . I won't take up the space in this blog to quote him, but I believe if you scan over the interview again, you will clearly see all of the attitudes I have just mentioned.

He was obviously very jealous of Bob (personally, Bunny is my favorite Wailer, so that is not affecting my judgement), overly concerned with $ and sales (for a true rasta), but at the same time angry that so much of his audience was white (a bit racist for someone who preaches equality amongst people), and had to blame anyone but himself for poor record sales.

I think it's great that people love his music...but let's not let that over shadow everything by calling him a prophet, as I saw in many of the comments. He was a great musician with an even greater ego.

Fantastic interview. I think the bottom line is never before -- and woe to humankind -- perhaps never again, will there be a confluence of talent the likes of Peter, Bunny, and Bob coming together again. Who cares if Bob's better? Or if Peter's better? They both are so talented, it's like comparing two blazing suns/stars in the heavens. Who's to say one is hotter, brighter than the other? They were too bright, too powerful to stay together for long. Each needed more space, more room as to pan out and reach different, broader audiences. As for the horrible tragedy of PT's murder, it's very difficult to imagine it NOT being politically motivated. I think Leppo? was definitely a patsy, PT had conflict througout his life with the Jamaican police/authorities. He himself told how they had "beat him within an inch of his life" one time back in the 70's. Finally, Bob himself basically predicted Peter's demise, did he not? "How long shall they kill our profits, while we stand aside and look...?"

By all accounts I've heard and read(and I've read/heard A LOT), Tosh was indeed quite the egotist. First, Why do we never hear the name of this so called "associate," of Tosh that took a rap for him in exchange for support of his family. This is also briefly mentioned in the Stepping Razor, but also quickly dismissed as lies. It also seems highly unreasonable. I have been thinking more about this. SO the story goes like this...."According to him, many years before his death, Peter Tosh had some sort of run in with the law. Sorry, I have no specifics concerning what for. The cops and authorities however were apparently coming down hard and looking to put PT away for a while. Because of this, an associate of PT's, who was apparently much less fortunate, offered to take the fall for whatever it was. In exchange, all he asked was that PT take care of his family while he was away and treat them as his own. The story goes that the man went to prison and emerged 15 years later only to find that..."

We are to believe that someone would go to jail for 15 years thus leaving his wife and children for a crime he did not commit in hope that his wife would be taken care by another man. And his children, who would be more than likely adults when he emerges, would be abandoned for their entire childhood. Wow, quite the guy, and what is this mans name, it should be easy to find if he did 15 years in jail.

Peter was a revolutionary and was cowardly executed...what else can you say about being shot face down in the back of the head?
