Discovering Affleck
Published August 13, 2003
I know some people have already discussed the movie Daredevil, so I am going to look at it from the perspective of its star Ben Affleck.
I truly thought Ben Affleck was on a good path to stardom. I was first introduced to him in Kevin Smith movies Mallrats and Chasing Amy. I thought he was pretty good. Then Good Will Hunting made me think that he was, if nothing else, a great writer because that movie rocked. Now after a couple more years, I don't think much of Affleck at all. I won't pile on the Gigli thing, because I haven't seen that movie, but let's look at a couple of movies he has done recently before hitting Daredevil.
In Boiler Room (with Giovanni Ribisi) Affleck was pretty good at playing an egotistical recruiter type with a fraudulent investment company. Not bad, but a bit roll. Pearl Harbor was an ok movie and Affleck was just ok in it. He did nothing to blow me away, no pun intended. Changing Lanes, he was severely out-acted by Samuel L. Jackson and this movie ended up being a big disappointment. Sum of all Fears, I thought Affleck was a bright spot in this movie. He didn't do anything to embarrass the Jack Ryan character.
That brings us to Daredevil. After all those mediocre rolls, this is the first time that Affleck gets to play a superhero. I thought Affleck did a decent job of playing the blind guy during the day, but he definitely struggled as the superhero. His delivery of the cheesy lines weren't very intense and some of the special effects action was too over the top. Although they developed his sense of radar/sonar so that the viewer understood kind of how it worked, they didn't explain his ability to jump 100-foot gaps between buildings and do backflips with ease. They should have explained how we got there a little better.
Other than that, the story line was pretty good, Jennifer Garner is hot, but the ending was completely abrupt. They hadn't developed Kingpin as a villain very well despite the red rose connection. And Affleck didn't seem angry enough in the final scenes trying to take him down. Do you remember Keaton's vengeance stare from Batman? How about Luke's whimpering over-reaction in the meet up with Darth Vader? They needed to do better.
Now, I am not saying you shouldn't watch Daredevil, because I was entertained for roughly 1.5 hours. Just temper your expectations and you won't be disappointed. As for Affleck? He better be damn good in Jersey Girl, because if he ruins a Kevin Smith movie for me, I am going to be ticked off.

I too am apatheitc toward Ben in general, but I thought he was quite good as the amoral and menacing tutor figure in Boiler Room, was excellent in Shakespeare in Love, was good in Forces of Nature, and fine in Armageddon. Maybe ultimately he's a character actor and not a star.
Ben Affleck sucks. Sorry. I mean, maybe he's a nice person and all, but he's a poor actor. That some movies (like Good Will Hunting or Bounce) manage to survive his presence (barely, in the case of Bounce) says more about those movies than about Ben.
There are very few actors or actresses that I think ought to have their permission to appear on screen taken away, but he just about tops the list.
My wife disagrees, because she likes to look at him, but she concedes that he couldn't act his way onto a high school stage if he didn't look like he does.
Ben Affleck is terrible. Can't act, always same pathetic frown faces.

I'm apathetic towards Affleck, but you left out the horrible Reindeer Games. Sadly, Charlize Theron (who is by far one of the most beautiful actresses out there) was in it too.
