Goddam Indiana Cops Suck, Complaint #115
Published August 09, 2003
A classic NWA joint leaps to mind as we ponder this latest clever escapade from Indiana's boys in blue.
Three years back, the US Supreme Court said - in response to a case involving the Indianapolis Police Department - that cops could not set up roadblocks to randomly search cars for drugs. Duh! "Unreasonable search and seizure." You need, uh, probable cause. Perhaps a frickin' warrant would be nice. Possession of drugs does not constitute an immediate driving impairment in the way that drunk driving does, which (quite improperly) causes the court to arbitrarily make big exceptions to the constitution for alcohol sobriety checkpoints.
In response, August 6 and 7, a multi-agency task force of Indiana cops, aka "pigs", set up a fake random drug roadblock on the north side of Indianapolis. They put up signs reading (in English and Spanish) "narcotics checkpoint ahead." They engineered it so that to avoid the supposed checkpoint, you'd have to drive badly, perhaps making an illegal U-turn - thus giving the pigs "probable cause" to stop you.
This netted them apparently at least one arrest for possession of marijuana. They haven't been more specific about results. Anyway, they're already announcing plans to do more of these in Indianapolis, and in Boone and Hendricks counties.
In the first place, the pigs are purposely creating a traffic hazard, trying to goad people into unsafe driving. That's no good.
This tactic might skirt under the wire of what the courts will allow - but the courts are already giving them WAY too much ground here. Yet if I hit one of these pigs on the back of the head with a 2x4 to knock some respect for the goddam constitution into them, I would be considered the bad guy. Go figure.

Cops SUCK!!! having brought this post back to the top of the heap, it occurs to me now as a candidate that this may not be my most diplomatically stated post.
Nonetheless, this is exactly what I think, and exactly the kind of straight talk you can expect from the Barger for Senate campaign.
[Cue patriotic Sousa march music]
it occurs to me now as a candidate that this may not be my most diplomatically stated post.
Candidate Barger pulled a Cheney?
I'm not surprised the cops in the midwest would do something like this. I'm less sure they could get away with it on the coasts, but I could be wrong.
Hmmm, I'm thinking that LAPD makes those Indianapolis cops look downright civilized.
I will emphasize that I don't wish to paint all cops from Indiana or elsewhere with a broad brush - only the ones who are actually doing dumb stuff like this.
As to pulling a Cheney, ha! I'm sure a journalist who wanted to spend an hour on finding me saying impolitic things could work up quite a dossier.
jeez,
looks like someone wasnt hugged enough as a kid..problems with authority?
dont get ur panties in a bunch girlfriend. down here in the little ol south, there were such signs and the courts vacated the convictions of those caught.
They engineered it so that to avoid the supposed checkpoint, you'd have to drive badly, perhaps making an illegal U-turn- thus giving the pigs "probable cause" to stop you.
you say "you'd have to drive badly"
OH MY GAWD....A SIGN.......SHIVER, SHIVER OH GAWD WHAT WILL I EVER DO??? I KNOW, I WILL DRIVE BADLY!!!
i wonder how many people who werent transporting drugs that day "HAD" to drive badly and make an illegal u-turn? i would bet there werent many huh?
Yet if I hit one of these pigs on the back of the head...
so you like to hit someone from behind? says a lot about what you think about your physical abilities.( i saw your pic tubby, cut some carbs and try some cardio. who knows in a few years you might be only morbidly obese) i'll send you a night light, be brave, the boogyman in blue wont get you.
Everyone hates cops until they need one. Yeah... [Deleted]
Sadf, I'm curious what kind of "minority" you think I am.
But I don't know why I'd NEED a cop. They are necessary for cleanup and paperwork, granted, but if somebody was a danger to me, I'd just shoot them my damned self.
I hope we have so many cops in the future that the payrate is the same as a walmart employee! Cant wait its already getting that way.
uhm, I'm trying to figure out why anyone is defending people who may have drugs in their possesion. NO, it does not necessarily impair your driving to have drugs in your possesion, but obviously if you have them, you are already mentally impaired and should probably be pulled off the streets for your own safety.
As for never NEEDING a cop? I hope you never do need one, because I sure don't want some one I love to lay down their life for you! Cops, or "pigs" as you so close mindedly refer to them, put their lives on the line every day or night they report to work. They put their duties before family, friends, and their own personal time just to protect people they will most likely never meet. It saddens me that there are so many people with a complete disrespect for authority.
Jess, you're simply being chauvinistic in your loyal love of any and all officers. Some are great, some are utterly corrupt, many have some of both. It was less than a year ago that I had a cop take an oath and then directly lie on me in open court rather than admit a mistake- not that anybody actually believed Officer Zach.
I recognize that a police force is necessary, and that indeed sometimes officers lay down their lives in service of their community. That knowledge buys all officers some significant benefit of the doubt- but that still doesn't give them license to do stupid, wrong crap like these roadblocks.
Further Jess, your apparent total intolerance reflected in this comment doesn't much impress me as rational or nice or particularly honest: "if you have them [drugs], you are already mentally impaired and should probably be pulled off the streets for your own safety." Sell your crazy Reefer Madness some place else, cause I've got crazy covered. Here's what you get messin' with Kentuckians' drugs.
Lake Tapawingo Police SUCK! If you are ever traveling down Wood's Chapel Road in Blue Springs, WATCH YOUR BACK when you go past the Lake Tapawingo country club. Behind that fence is a traffic nazi cop who would like nothing better than to write you a ticket for any old damn thing he can think of. My wife was driving past there one night minding her own sweet business when that darn security guard reject of a cop pulled her over and wrote her a $75 ticket for "no front license plate". There had'nt been a front license plate on that car since it was purchased 2 years ago, nor was there a bracket to mount a plate on the front of the car when I bought it. Local cops and state troopers never gave me any problem, even when they were sitting accross the intersection from me. That wasn't the case for my wife when she passed by Lake Tapawingo late that night. Every time I drive by there, that stale donut eater has someone else pulled over for some bullshit reason! Lake Tapawingo is nothing more than a country club, yet some idiot in the county government allowed them to have their own police department. I do believe they only have 2 cops in that department. Instead of patroling inside the confines of their country club and protecting the 700 members of their quaint little community, they would rather sit on the side of the nearby county road and write tickets to passers by. If you are from Lake Tapawingo and are reading this, tell your boys in blue to stay on their side of the fence and quit herassing folks on Wood's Chapel Road because NOBODY wants them there! If you need money for your sorry excuse of a town, increase homeowners dues and quit robbing citizens of surrounding communities for the money. I happen to know that the ONLY reason you have your own cops is to make more money for your greedy selves!
Al, I am not being "chauvinistic". I have no doubt that there are dirty cops out there, just as there are dirty politicians, CEO's, bankers, teachers, you name it. I am not saying that every cop on the street is perfect. But, it saddens me that there are people who have a complete disrepect for what they do, and the sacrifices they make. And, you are correct about one thing, I have a complete intolerance for drugs. I've seen too many lives and families destroyed because of them. And, I've seen too many innocent people hurt or killed over drugs.....families, cops, innocent bystanders. I'm not sure how my intolerance of something illegal is condsidered "dishonest", but you are entitled to your opinon
When the pig,s are gone the swine will run rampant. Choose wisely dumb fucks.
Is there ANY other profession that shuns intelligent applicants?
Police reject candidate for being too intelligent
A US man has been rejected in his bid to become a police officer for scoring too high on an intelligence test.
Robert Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took an exam to join the New London police, in Connecticut, in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125.
Is there ANY other profession with the disgusting double standards practiced by scumbadges?
Cop Slop- I've heard of this phenomenon before. Take it for anecdotal hearsay, but I'm to understand that my godson's father was rejected for a local cop job in Indiana for scoring too high on whatever exactly IQ/aptitude test they were giving some years back.
Then again, maybe that's halfway sensible. I would find it easy to imagine that a particularly smart cop might be more likely to object to doing dumb crap like these cheesy roadblocks.
HEY, TAPAWINGO TICKET GUY, THE REASON THEY SNAG EVERYONE IN THEIR 50 FOOT OF WOODS CHAPEL IS TO BRING IN OUTSIDE REVENUES, TO MAKE NON RESIDENTS PAY FOR THEIR SHIT LIKE WHEN THE TAPAWINGO COP SHOT THAT KID IN THE FACE THEN THE CHIEF OF POLICE JOINS THE PARTY, THEY TRY TO COVER IT UP.LEAVE THE KID THEY SHOT TO DIE IN THE DITCH-- NO SHIT CHECK OUT THE STORIES IN EXAMINER.NET THE COPS SAY THERE WAS A STRUGGLE- THEN THE MAN WAS SHOT, AFTER HE WAS SHOT HE DROVE OFF- THEN THEY SAY HE DROVE OFF THEN WAS SHOT- THEN THEY SAY THERE WAS NO STRUGGLE- THEY HAVE BURIED THIS POOR KID ALIVE I WISH I KNEW HOW TO HELP HIM HE WAS A COLLEGE STUDENT ON SCHOLARSHIP NOW I DONT KNOW BUT HE IS NOT THE SAME ANYMORE LOTS OF EVIL BEHIND THAT FENCE THE TRUTH IS SHOCKINGLY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT THE PAPERS PRINTED- LIKE THE INJURIES BEING "SERIOUS, BUT NOT LIFE THREATENING" THE KID WAS SHOT IN THE FACE WITH A 40 GLOCK 40, WAS ON A RESPERATOR AND WAS IN A COMA AND THEY DIDNT TELL ANYBODY 3 DAYS LATER WAS THE FIRST ANYONE THAT KNEW THE GUY KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPEND
my experience with cops which is very little & minor,is that they are asholes & on an ego trip with that badge & gun.when they become a cop they know what hazards the job has.like when your a roofer you take a chance of falling off a building,if your an electrician you take a chance of getting electrified etc.fact of the matter is if you dont want to be involved in an already corrupt & worthless so called profession (COP)then dont join!!maybe their life wouldnt be at risk if they would treat people right.
i dont know what the criteria is for a cop but it must be borderline plane stupid to sh&^ for brains.it really repulses me when i hear the crap that a cop puts their life on the line, for one it comes with the job just like if your a truck driver you stand the chance of having a wreck or if your a butcher its likely you will cut yourself...etc.so the crap that a cop is puting their life on the line is just that crap!i dont have any respect for cops for the simple fact they show me & the public no respect, their simply asholes thats on a ego trip cause some ashole placed a badge on thier worthless chest.
Al, I know this is an old thread, but it's interesting.
We don't have the random motor-vehicle drug-stop in this part of Australia (yes, they still need probable cause, although I suspect they can make that up: "He had long hair, your Honour, and looked like a suspect in an earlier robbery. He wasn't, but we stopped him and searched for pot anyway and wasted his f..kin' time and ours") at road blocks, although the cops have used drug dogs in raids at notorious night-clubs and outside big rock concerts, although the courts are having things to say about it the same as they are in the US.
However, it is very common in Australia to be pulled over by a police random breath-testing unit. I don't object to that, as they do catch a lot of people and my view is, if you have nothing to hide and haven't been drinking, no problem. There's no sobriety test - you blow into a hand-held testing unit without leaving your car, and if you register above .05, you get carted off to the cop shop for another "evidentiary" test that is more accurate.
Sometimes, people likely just on .05 when they were stopped will blow just under and be released. However, what I object to in all this is that when these laws were brought in years ago, the state government here made a song and dance about privacy and personal freedoms, assuring motorists that under the legislation they'd set out for RBT, the police weren't meant to ask for your driver's licence or to search your car or indeed do anything but breath-test you unless they had cause to suspect you might have done something else.
The problem is, that's pretty close to an open-interpretation and left up to them, they'll use it any time they feel like it.
Example: last year, I had just a haircut. I drive a newish, imported European car. The police stopped me for an RBT, I blew 0 and they thanked me, called me "Sir", never asked for my licence or checked my registration sticker, wished me a good night and I drove off.
Recently, I was stopped again. Once again I blew a 0. But this time my hair had grown to well below collar-length, and I have a goatee-style beard and moustache.
They asked me for my licence, took my licence away to their patrol car, probably checked my bona-fides and that I wasn't driving a stolen vehicle (I saw them looking at my licence plates and my registration sticker), and in the meantime, a guy was checking in the back with a torch and asking me stupid questions about the surfboards, wetsuits, blocks of boardwax, spare fins, screwdrivers (well-known housebreaking implement, and of course no one uses them for anything else ... "Yes mate, I use it to take the fins on and off - see the screws at the top of each one and the fin boxes on each board").
At least 10 minutes of wasting my time and theirs, but since it's their job and they're getting paid and I'm just trying to get home for dinner after a 10-hour day, mine's more important.
Same deal last year when I returned to Sydney airport from a trip to Portugal. I had long hair, and I was grilled quite extensively, a drug dog checked my bags, etc etc, and I was personally questioned a second time in the arrivals hall by a uniformed customs officer.
Two months later, I am returning from a trip to Thailand, one of the drug-trafficking capitals of the world, but had since cut my hair short. Lo and behold ... no one even gives me a second look. I just waltzed through the nothing-to-declare queue and out to the cab rank.
And of course, you are right: when it's left to the interpretation of the police, they will always be heavy-handed.
We don't have written constitutional protections in regard to the kind of stuff you are talking about, but they are protected at common law in much the same way, and Australians are very serious about their common-law protections much the same as Americans are with their constitutional ones.
The notion of suspicion and what constitutes the eqivalent of probable cause, however, now seem to have passed into the hands of law-enforcement officers, both state and federal, and the only redress in relation to this now seems to be in the courts, where the judiciary at least is offering some contradictory viewpoints to those who seem intent on bullying us or at least using loopholes in the law to achieve their ends.
It should never have got this far, however.
Once you are depending on the courts to maintain freedoms you have until now taken for granted and that have existed at law anyway for 1000 years, you are well on the road to losing them.
So keep railing against it Al. It's worth fighting for.
