STAR SPANGLED BLAMERS
Published August 01, 2003
Gays are blamed for everything. It all started with the destruction of Sodom and Gamorrah. In reality, this biblical verse is a far cry from concerning homosexuality. Nevertheless, as time marched onward, gays have been blamed for everything ranging from the Black Plague to communism and the holocaust. In recent times, gays were even blamed for the horrific acts of September 11th. Let us not forget though, that it was a gay man by the name of Mark Bingham who helped bring down an airplane in rural Pennsylvania. Regardless, the gays caused if, or at least, that is what the not-so-great Reverend Jerry Fallwell has said.
Now, it is only logical that America should blame gays for the sad state of marriage as we know it today. It should not come as a surprise really. After all, we are a society of blamers these days, are we not?
If the institution of marriage is so sacred then maybe our esteemed government should concentrate on legislating against the real threats to marriage. For example, television has devalued the traditional notions of marriage. Shows such as "Who Wants To Marry a Millionaire" have certainly not added to the values that a marriage once represented in our society. From those of us on the outside looking in, heterosexuals are blatantly making a soap opera of their own institution. And quite honestly, I love watching the show - no pun intended.
"Married By America" was the biggest joke in the history of marriage. I guess it is more sacred for America to AT&T text message a couple into holy matrimony. That certainly seems more beneficial to maintaining such a sacred bond. Marrying two total strangers must be more of a family value than marrying two same-sexed individuals in a long-term committed relationship.
Many heterosexuals undoubtedly take their marriages for granted. They do not realize that marriage is so much more than a religious bond. In fact, the legal implications of a marriage far outweigh any religious ties to the institution. When two people get married, they inherit over 1,000 benefits and protections afforded them by the United States legal system.
The real truth is that the institution of divorce has single-handedly destroyed the sanctity of marriage. Almost 60% of all heterosexual marriages today result in divorce. Somehow, radicals will not recognize this statistic. They would rather blame a group of individuals who are not privy to this fact.
There is no causal relationship between the demise of heterosexual marriages and the legalization of homosexual marriages. Maybe the true vice affecting the sanctity of marriage is a problem coming from within the glorious heterosexual "lifestyle." If heterosexuals took the time to contemplate their solemn vows before they spat them off the tip of an ignorant tongue, then "until death to us part" might actually mean something. Rather, the phrase has become a morbid cliche'.
