System of a Dodger

You don't hear about a lot of Armenian-American baseball players, or rock stars for that matter. From a press release:
- System of a Down guitarist and L.A. Dodgers fan DARON MALAKIAN has made the team for the Los Angeles Dodgers' 45th Annual "Hollywood Stars" baseball game to be held at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, August 9. Introductions will begin at 5PM with the exhibition game starting at 5:30PM. The "Hollywood" and "Stars" celebrity teams will square off for about an hour.
"I've been going to Dodgers games since I was a kid," said Malakian. "I can't believe I'm going to take batting practice and play baseball on the field at Dodger Stadium. This really is a dream come true for me."
....Following Malakian's major league baseball endeavor, System of a Down will share the top of the bill with Metallica at the Leeds (August 22) and Reading (August 24) festivals in the UK, and then begin work on their follow-up to 2001's critically-acclaimed, multi-Platinum album, "Toxicity."

The amazing thing about this band is that they do a lot of politically motivated things, but they don't force it down anyone's throat. Sometimes, they write it up in their lyrics, but mostly, they just provide options for their fans to get involved as opposed to guilting them into it. Until I heard from this band, I never knew anything about the Armenian holocaust. It is the kind of event which is not covered in history classes in high school so most people don't know of it.
The gas station/repair shop I went to in LA in the early '80s was run by Armenian-Americans: I heard plenty about the Armenian holocaust. Let's just say they did not route for Turkey in the Olympics.

Here's hoping that the Pirates can get him in a trade for Jason Kendall!
