I have found it spelled "guilded" and "gilded," and I am certain he meant the meaning of "gilded" vs. "guilded," which just plain doesn't make sense. "Gilded" would mean splinters dipped in gold, which I am certain he meant. I don't see splinters joining together to form a guild.
