Ambient Radio

I was unaware of the this syndicated PRI show, Echoes, which appears to be tres cool. We do not get it in Northeast Ohio:

    ECHOES
A Nightly Music Soundscape Over 150 Radio Stations

    FEATURES AND HIGHLIGHTS
    **UPDATE**
    for July 2003
Following is a listing of Echoes features and Living Room Concerts that may include yourself or one or more of your artists. Keep in mind that not all stations run all ten hours of ECHOES produced each week. Some stations also tape delay their broadcasts, and others swap the sequence of hours. The 3 to 4 dates you'll see with each listing are the initial broadcast, the following Saturday where many stations tape delay, and the following Sunday, which is the Echoes Sunday feed. Call one of our 150 public radio stations for the forthcoming week of ECHOES.

ARTISTS FEATURED THIS MONTH ON ECHOES
Randy Armstrong, Autumn's Child, Alex de Grassi, Kaki King, McGill-Manring-Stevens, Pat Metheny, Mundi Ensemble, One Alternative, Christopher O'Riley, Jason Rubenstein, Serart, Saul Stokes, 3AM

SPECIAL NOTE: Pat Metheny Living Room Concert Re-Scheduled

Thursday 07/24*, Saturday 07/26**, Sunday 07/20* A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH PAT METHENY
World renowned jazz guitarist Pat Metheny sits in the Echoes Living Room to play his acoustic baritone guitar. Metheny has just released his first solo acoustic guitar album, ONE QUIET NIGHT (Warner Bros.). Metheny plays music from that album, including meditative covers of songs by Norah Jones and Gerry & the Pacemakers and a spontaneous improvisation drawn from the serene states of ONE QUIET NIGHT.

They would appear to cover ambient music in its many forms from contemporary classical to world, jazz, electronic, space, tribal, new age, etc. Their "essential artists" are Brian Eno, Dead Can Dance, Steve Roach, R. Carlos Nakai, Loreena McKennitt, Michael Hedges, Steve Tibbetts, Robert Rich, Enya, and Vangelis, a noble list indeed.

Just a cursory check shows that wvxu.org in Cincinnati streams their programming online. Or go to the Echoes website and find any other station with "listen live" features. I hardly ever listen to the radio on an actual 'radio' anymore.
