Don't Throw Away That Lid

This strikes me as overkill, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless:

Pop singer Rachel Farris has done her share of club gigs, radio station appearances and guest spots on tours for better-known acts, but she's far from a household name.

....On Friday, the nation's largest movie theater chain and two Universal Studios theme parks will begin rolling out 4.8 million multimedia CDs containing two of Farris' songs, lyrics, an interview and a video of the singer.

Soft drink buyers at Regal Entertainment Group's 530 theaters in 36 states and the Universal theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles will find Farris' CD inside lids on their soft drink cups. The theaters will also show a three-minute video of Farris before the movie.

In all, some 25 million people could see Farris' video in the theaters or buy drinks with her CD during the monthlong campaign, according to Big3 Records, the singer's independent label.

The multimillion-dollar marketing push is an unusual move by a new artist, but is designed to generate exposure outside traditional music outlets like radio and MTV, which are harder to break into, said Big3 owner Bill Edwards. [AP]

Big3, which I have never heard of, must have some seriously deep pockets for an indie - maybe they are trying to position the label as well.
A photo of Farris covers the CD label but her multimedia content shares space with commercial clips of Stuck on You, a comedy starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear, and Universal Studios' theme park rides.

Still, the push is clearly focused on Farris.

"I'm just hoping it will [get] a good reaction," she said from Long Island, N.Y., where she was performing with teen boy group O-Town. "It's a totally new idea, and there's always risk involved."

More on the CD-lid concept here.

I believe she is the younger sister of Save Ferris. I always thought Save was such a cool first name, but I always had to ask "Which one's Save?"

Kid with can: Save Ferris... Save Ferris... Yo. We're collecting money to buy Ferris Bueller a new kidney. They run about fifty g's so if you could help out...

Jeanie Bueller: Go piss up a flagpole!

Haha if someone really named their kid save ferris they deserve an award.

that's an awesome idea. I would not mind buying a soda, then finding a free cd in the lid. It would make my day. haha.

peace.

I'm just wondering how they'll keep the CD in working form. Is it going to be wrapped in plastic? I mean moister has a tendency to build around a ice cold drink.

Darn couldn't stop it before it sent. I meant moisture.

That is a great idea. I'm sure the movie agreed to front a good chunk of the money as it sounds like the film is getting promoted, too.

Free CD? Yeah that's almost as good as a free cool soda in Arizona.

Piece :)

OPT - on purpose typo

ok, i got one of these yesterday when i got a soda at Finding Nemo. The lid has two part, with a hinge, and it pries appart simularly to a donut carton. It stays in there nice and secure until you're ready to take it out.

pretty darn ingenious.

peace.

I saw a movie and got the CD in the lid and I couldn't help thinking to myself that whoever came up with this idea is a genius because there are so many people there and they are always complaining about overpriced drinks and what nots but now you get this great mini CD and the preview of her music before the music gives you a reason to either choose to go home listening to it or not. It makes much of the world very aware of her whether they decide to like her or not and that's every artist's dream - to be known...

Yeah the lid cd is a great idea. That's how i found out about Rachel Farris. Which is one of my top favorite music artists. All of her songs are great, she puts her hear t and soul into every track, that at the end of the album you feel like you know her. And she is one of the very and i mean very few who actually write to her fans. And i'm not talking about a chainletter or a stock letter, she reads the e-mail (her e-mail is on her website) and personally writes back! How cool is that?! I was lucky enough to meet her last year at her 6 Flags concert, and she knew who i was by the e-mails, so i know she really does write to her fans. I hope you read this Rachel Farris because you ROCK! And i can't wait untill you go back on tour
