Syd Barrett's still not here

Looking at the recent documentary on Syd Barrett.
As a documentary film-maker, UK-based director John Edginton has a history of exploring the impact of mental illness. In Australia, he is best known for Deep Sleep, his documentary insight into the Chelmsford Hospital scandal. The desire to make Pink Floyd and the Syd Barrett Story, Edginton says, sprang from a fascination with Barrett, whose last-known recorded works were essentially the documentation of the steady descent into madness.
"At the time it first came out it seemed exciting music but I didn't try to analyse it," says Edginton, who, at 56, is the same age as Barrett. Re-discovering the music for the documentary, Edginton says he listened more closely and was better able to understand and appreciate the lost genius.
"I think some of those songs are absolutely gut-wrenching," he says. "I saw this as a film about his music and his psychological history and the way his songs reflected what had happened to him."
I've seen this for sale on DVD in recent weeks, so I'll probably pick it up. Apparently Syd himself is happy with it. It's not on Amazon, though, so you might need to do a bit of hunting for it...
