Yet Another New Blogcritics Feature
Published June 27, 2003
Following up on yesterday's addition of a link to other posts by the same author, today brings yet another new feature to Blogcritics.
For each comment, you can now link by either name or url (email addresses are kept private) to other comments from that person. It's not perfect yet. In particular, blank URLs are a problem I haven't bothered to handle well yet. However, it works well enough to use in most cases, so I'm in the process of rolling it out on all of the older posts on the site right now.
Note that different people with the same name will show up together unless you use 'both' to match the name and URL. If the URLs are blank, that won't help either. If you want to make sure you're always identified correctly and uniquely, use an URL!
Also, note that there is no password protection on comments, so if you see a comment you feel is completely out of character, perhaps it wasn't really them at all. Please respect each other and use your own identity when commenting. The system tracks your IP address internally even though we don't publish the information, so be nice.
The Details
As I've initially worked it up, the bottom of each comment now contains a line which looks like this:
I've used myself as an example. Because I've always consistently used the same name and URL for each comment, you'll get the same 498 comments no matter which of the three links you choose, but the 'URL' option isn't linked backed to the posts I've made, just the comments. There is an obscure technical reason for that, but I'll probably fix it in the future.

Comments
Just saw an animated GIF ad on the top right. Am I wrong, or is this the first animated GIF on Blogcritics?
One thing I LOVED about Blogcritics is that it didn't have animated GIF ads to distract me from the text. (I use Safari, so I can't turn them off without turning off all images.)
Just my $.02

Oh yes, I forgot one more thing. I've also updated the comments area to explain what happens to the email address you enter. A few people has asked (or complained). :)
