What is it about Iris DeMent's voice that hits me right in the gut? She makes me weak in the knees.

It's her voice that hooks me. But I'm descended from Tennesee hillbillies. :)
I love her singing voice too. Strange thing, though, is that her speaking voice sounds nothing like it. It's almost like she takes on a vocal persona.

I know this is the pot calling the kettle black, coming from someone who likes Neil Young and Rush: no matter how much I try, I cannot get past Iris' voice. It really rubs me the wrong way.
