I think a better, more self serving book couldn't have been written by Metallica themselves. Though I do recognize Metallica's contribution to "metal", I think dismissing them blatantly compromising their integrity as anything less than selling out, shameful. Metallica's Other than that I feel enlightened. The book obviously comes from the heart and mind of someone who truly appreciates heavy metal.

As a long-in-the-tooth and long-over-the hill punk rocker, I've been forced to concede over the years that metal is a vastly superior genre, in both musicianship and stylistic diversity. Even some of Led Zep's stuff sounds ok.

I've been skimming this book on and off at Border's, and it really seems terrific.

I would liked to have seen more discussion of the love/hate relationship between punk and metal over the years, especially through "crossover" bands like Suicidal Tendencies and Corrosion of Conformity. I think ST in particular is one of the most under-rated bands around.

A book I clearly need to read as well, thanks for the review. Regarding Lords of Chaos, though, while eye-opening stuff, I would say that it's got more than flaws. Moynihan does, after all, make no reference whatsoever to his own participation in the right-wing pagan music scene (through his band Blood Axis); I wouldn't have known about this had I not read Gavin Baddeley's Lucifer Rising in which Moynihan is interviewed and criticised (not unjustly, I think) for trying to blow Varg Vikernes up into this legendary figure...
