The Complete John Silence Stories

Algernon Blackwood is a writer in the weird tradition who unfortunately has been largely forgotten by the reading public.

This collection of stories features John Silence, a psychic detective, who to me resembles a magically inclined Sherlock Holmes.

The book has six stories, five of which were published in the original 1908 book, John Silence, Physician Extraordinary. One of my favorites, Secret Worship, has Dr. Silence rescuing a man named Harris who was under the thrall of a sect of an evil religious order.

The last story in this book, A Victim of Higher Space, was not published in the original volume, but it is worthwhile due to its quiet creepiness and despair of the main character.

I enjoyed these stories because Blackwood's writing is quieter than modern suspense — not boring, but not so reliant on pyrotechnics. The creeps/thrills pervade you, rather than slap.
