But What About Spike Jonze?
Published June 05, 2003
Filmmaker Spike Lee is apparently suing Viacom over its plans to rename TNN "Spike TV".
But Spike isn't even his real name!
Come on, man.
- In court papers filed Tuesday, Lee asked for an injunction against Viacom's use of the name, saying he had never given his consent for it to be used.
- "The media description of this change of name, as well as comments made to me and my wife, confirmed what was obvious — that Spike TV referred to Spike Lee," Lee said in court papers.
- TNN, which bills Spike TV as "the first network for men," said it was "confident that the court will reject any legal claims by Mr. Lee to the popular word and name Spike."
- Viacom bought TNN in 2000, and said in April that it would change the channel's name to Spike TV on June 16 in an attempt to increase the number of men in an audience that is already about two-thirds male.
Spike TV is boasting a new cartoon - Stripperella - from the comic master himself, Stan Lee, with voice talent from Pamela Anderson. Interesting enough.
But either way, I'll probably tune in. They're gonna bring back Ren & Stimpy. You eeeediots.

When I first heard about Spike TV, I thought: "Cool, an entire channel devoted to Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. How Whedonesque".
I thought the channel would be dedicated to Spike Jones. I was hoping for perhaps vintage footage of his infamous promotional "underwear parades". I'd go for a channel showing vintage 1944 video of Spike Jones' band in their long johns marching down the street playing "Der Fuhrer's Face".
It'd sure be more entertainment and intellectual value than a channel full of Spike Lee foolishness.

I just wonder who Spike got permission from to call himself Spike...
