As for James Coburn, when he saw Samurai, he was reportedly overwhelmed by the acting job performed by the silent samurai, that he jumped at the chance to take the role of the knifethrower. I saw an interview with him once, where he said he had something like seven [possibly 11] speaking words in the script.</description>
