beginning. Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley didn't get a fair day in court and that?s not right and if you're down with this program then you're standing up for justice. Like Henry, I don't know that these three boys are innocent or guilty. I just know they didn't get their fair day in court. Every time I put myself in that place in my mind, I shudder. The more I learned, the more I became convinced that it raises issues of historic proportions. In 1999, I decided that those issues deserved the attention of a book. I resolved to report that much talked-about 'truth' of what happened, whether it supported the verdicts of guilt, as Arkansas officials insisted it would, or pointed to the WM3's innocence. My research was, as you might imagine, intriguing. And, despite my familiarity with the case, much of what I uncovered left me slack-jawed in amazement. I named the book Devil's Knot. In one sense, the title refers to the bindings that held the murder victims. But in a larger sense, it represents the bindings that hold, not only Jessie, Damien, and Jason, but all of us, when justice is perverted.
