Apple Music in Blogcritics' Future
Published June 03, 2003
As you probably know, we are affiliated with Amazon for purchase of CDs, books, DVDs, games, electronics, etc. that we review and/or discuss (buy lots, NOW), proceeds of which help fund Blogcritics (we don't ask for handouts).
It looks like we may be offering the Apple Music Store pretty soon as well:
- Apple Computer and Amazon.com are working on a deal that will make Apple's popular new online music store available on Amazon, The Post has learned.
The parties are in advanced talks and a deal is expected, though sources warn that negotiations might still unravel.
A partnership of the two technology giants would have clear benefits for both.
Apple would gain a significant new distribution outlet for its fledgling but fast-growing music service. Amazon would be able to expand its offerings to digital music - something it has wanted to do for some time.
....Amazon has the technology to offer digital downloads. While the company has long sold compact discs, it does allow users to download some tracks that artists make available for free.
Meanwhile, Amazon has licensed its popular and patented "one click" technology to Apple. [NY Post]

Interesting, though I wonder how it would work. Granted that iTunes is essentially a web interface underneath, but it is highly-customized, as Seth notes, to provide nearly instant response to things like samples and so on. Putting the exact same thing into a real web browser would, well, not be as good.
And like you said, Eric, it would need Windows support to work.
I suspect this whole thing is just a trial balloon someone is floating to see what happens.
It could all be FUD, but this may be their play to get to Windows.
Or it may be that they just want a link in iTunes to let those of us who want one to buy a physical CD from Amazon. And didn't CDNow (now an Amazon brand) once have a "buy 'X' tracks and we'll burn them onto a CD and ship it to you" service?
There are lots of things that could come out of this talk. Or nothing.
Yea, Apple could make some cash by linking to pages on Amazon where you could buy the album. Imagine all THAT affialte traffice for Apple? haha
They claim fourth quarter, pre-Christmas. I'm a little leery of the whole thing, myself. On my Mac, I can tell you that Apple-created software is elegant and beautiful. On Windows, Quicktime is not the most easy-to-use app. I'm not too eager to see iTMS for Windows. :(
There. That just cemented my desire to buy another Mac when I upgrade later in the next month or two.
Could I possibly love Apple any more? No. Not without entering an iConvent in Cupertino, CA and devoting the rest of my life to the Cause.

This could be quite nice, though I never had much luck with Amazon's "sample" feature. It rarley worked for me for some reason. The Apple iTunes4 system works so much better for me, even on a dialup.
