M. Night Shyamalans' Signs

I saw this flick over the weekend, remembering that a few people had said there's some religious overtone in the movie. Something about Father Graham Hess, played by the (apparently) hunky Mel Gibson, rediscovering religion.

A large part of this movie plays on the whole coincidence vs. fate argument, with Hess' dealing with his lost faith. A different aspect I liked was how they all gathered around the TV and watched an alien invasion unfold, kind of how we all did the same thing on 9/11/2001 and with the recent invasion of Iraq. We gasped with horror at the planes flying in buildings, kind of how Merrill Hess reacted to seeing video footage of real living alien. It felt real, probably the way we'd react to seeing the same footage.

In the end you find the main characters trapped in their basement, with no light, and no meds for their asthma suffering son. It all seemed very cliché' ("Quick, lets run around in the dark," plans abound) but for me, this didn't distract too much. I got what I wanted - some aliens, some crop circles, and some news channel footage telling of an alien invasion.
