Die Hard Trilogy - Fox (On DVD)

Die Hard 2: Die Harder - Fox (On DVD)
Genre: Action
Watchability: Jarring anachronisms and a few technical details don't really detract from overall enjoyment (unless maybe you're a pilot), and the movie keeps up the pace.
Philosophy: What philsophy? It's kill-or-be-killed, with a dash of don't-trust-anyone-in-authority.
Suitability: Rated 'R' because of violence, the icicle scene alone ought to be enough, but a plane crash helps boost the rating, too.
Overall: 4/5
Die Hard With A Vengeance - Fox (On DVD)
Genre: Action
Watchability: In theaters, I loved it. On DVD, I liked it. Afterwards, you might be annoyed at yourself for the indignities the plot made you suffer through, but the director keeps it interesting.
Philosophy: An attempt at a political statement late in the film turns into a plot twist, and not a very strong one. There is no real philosophy, it's an action film.
Suitability: People die, survive things that should kill them (more than once) and it's generally violent. Also, kids appear to be in grave danger, which probably helps contribute to the 'R' rating.
Overall: 3/5

That is completely unsurprising, but very disappointing. The whole idea of the Die Hard series was of well-plotted films. No wonder it was so shallow compared to the first two!
Thanks.
Now that the trailers for Live Free or Die Hard are ubiquitous, I must say that I'm falling under the spell of the marketing campaign!

Your impression that "Die Hard III" was written from scratch isn't too far off the mark. I worked a few days in second unit electrics for the movie when it was filming in Baltimore. Bruce Willis had already left to film "12 Monkeys." I had the pleasure of working with Jeremy Irons, who played Simon, the villian. They made up some of the scenes on the spot as they filmed. It was even funnier watchng the extras and day players stumble through German with the language coach.
