Tim Burton to do new Wonka

Tim Burton to direct new Willy Wonka film.

The new adaptation has been a long time coming. Warner Bros. started kicking around the idea of a Wonka redo in 1991, but it didn't snag the rights until 1998. Apparently, Dahl detested the first film, and his family members dragged their feet on approving the second following his death in 1990.

Daily Variety reports that the estate gave the final go-ahead after learning the studio's choice of director. Burton, whose eccentric creative vision dovetails with Dahl's, also produced 1996's version of the author's James and the Giant Peach.

A mighty interesting proposal. I found the first film to be fun, and Gene Wilder was great at weirding out the audience. I also love Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice so I hope this turns out to be another hit from Burton.

I just was wondering because the article does not mention weather it will be stop motion or live action, and if it will be a musical or not, with new or old music. Very interesting indeed, ill be watching this project develop for sure.

Johney Depp said something to Variety that he thinks he should be Willy Wonka...I think that would be cool!

I love the story of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. I am not that fond of the old movie, however.

I concur Mr. Theory, although the oompa loompa's are pretty sweet.

Travis youre right, this article says Depps a front runner, they list Christopher Walken too. I wouldnt be able to decide between the two. They are both so awsome.

Another classic, soon to be ruined like Miracle on 34th Street? This is going to be a tough act for Burton to follow, but I hope he nails it. He has the kind of style that could pull this off.

Maybe Gene Wilder can play Grandpa Joe this time around?

Wonka sort of has the same nostalgic feel as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I suppose sooner or later someone will remake that too.

Most the remakes of films that did well the first time around blow.

Alice in Wonderland is his NEW movie!

THIS is the NEW gossip ALL over!

Tim Burton will create a great version of Willy Wonka - however, over-rated nonacting Johnny Depp should be tossed aside to make way for CHRISTOPHER WALKEN! Who could think of a more perfect/creepy Willy Wonka. Plus, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN can dance, sing, and act!
Johnny Depp should have realized during 21 jump street that his talent has extreme limits. Give up the ghost Johnny, and Tim, get a clue.

The original 1971 movie is an abborhation of the book. The book has a dark, sinister atmosphere that Gene Wilder and the 1971 Warner Bros. team simply couldn't maintain and still make a children's movie. (In other words, to be true to the book--it can't be rated 'G'.) Enter Mr. Burton--the only one who can do justice to Mr. Dahl's sinister storyline. I should be interested to see who plays Charlie... Anyone know when the film is scheduled to premiere??

By the by, it's supposed to be a live action film.

I too thought the original movie was way too cheery. The story always seemed very dark to me, something I think Tim Burton could do well. IMDB says the movie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2005) premieres in 2005 and credits Johnny Depp as Wonka. Unsure how I feel about this. Sometime Depp's flexibility comes across as homogenistic.

The first will always be a classic but this go around I'm hoping for less singing, if any, and the dark atmosphere the book painted.
